During a walk through the park, Dr. Taylor tells John that her father, Kenneth, passed away last month, so if he decides on therapy, it’ll be with her. John asks if he’s the only other shrink in Salem. She laughs. “Of course not.” She tells him her father was ill and came as a surprise to everyone. He was private and didn’t want a funeral or obituary. John calls funerals overrated. “I had one last year!” Dr. Taylor tells John that she is up to date on his file and wants to get started, but John sees Steve nearby, and goes to him to ask if there is news on the mayor’s killer. Steve has nothing for him. “So that means Samantha is still a target,” John asks. Steve has another contact to follow up on and promises to keep looking. He leaves and sits with Dr. Taylor on a park bench, asking him to begin. John is surprised she hasn’t asked him what that was about. If it’s not related to why they’re there, she’s not interested. John thought all shrinks were nosey, but she is the exception, she claims. John says he’s not the guy he used to be but he disagrees with Marlena’s assessment that there is something wrong with him. Dr. Baker tells him that it’s not uncommon for people to have a new personality and that family will usually grieve for their loved one’s old personality. She says changing the person back to their old personality can be done, but not if the patient has no desire.
Dr. Taylor and John arrive at the pub and Marlena introduces herself to Dr. Taylor, finding it surprising when she hears her name.
Brady meets Marlena at the pub after his four mile run. They’re waiting for John, Marlena says, who made her a promise that might be the beginning of getting him back. They discuss how he saved her and how his being in mercenary mode the other day was not welcomed around her family. She’s happy to tell Brady that John agreed to therapy. John arrives and is angry that Marlena shot her mouth off about this deal they had. Brady tries to intervene, but John says the deal’s off. Marlena apologizes and John tells them to continue their little conspiracy theory. Marlena tells John that she was only disclosing family need to know information. John says then why doesn’t she tell Brady about EJ and old man Stefano, which leaves Brady in shock. John says, “I’m a DiMera, and so are you.” Brady is angry to hear this and that nobody told him until now. Marlena says they were getting around to it and tells him this doesn’t change who he is. He calls himself an extra in John’s movie and John tells him to suck it up and be a man. Brady tells him to do the same! Brady says John’s not his father, but some pathetic robot, mocking everyone else. John looks to Marlena for support but she watches as they argue. Brady calls avoiding therapy a copout and leaves. Afterward, John tries to get out of the session, but Marlena’s on to him. He tells her not to talk to anyone else about his therapy. and after this, he tells her no more trying to change him. Marlena understands and apologizes for overstepping boundaries. She loves him and always will and wants to save his life as he has hers. “If it doesn’t work?” he asks… "One step at a time,” she says.
Dr. Charlotte Taylor arrives at the pub and bumps into John, dropping all her files.
At the townhouse, Marlena gives John an ultimatum. He has to get psychiatric help or he can’t see the children. John is worried about losing the only person he’s capable of caring for. Marlena refuses to discuss it further and asks him to see Dr. Kenneth Taylor, who was her thesis advisor. John is condescending but Marlena calls psychiatry a scientific field. Marlena already sent Dr. Taylor John’s files and gives him a card and tells him she won’t speak to him until he does this. John accuses her of trying to rule his life. She disagrees and tells him it’s over now. A knock comes to the door and Maggie arrives, crying and apologizes for bad timing but this is about Nick. John says he’ll go into the kitchen, get a cup of coffee and clean his gun. Marlena looks pointedly at John as he walks to the kitchen. Maggie explains Nick’s situation and that she’s afraid Nick will harm himself. Marlena assures Maggie that Bo and Roman will have Nick watched and given psychiatric treatment. Maggie is thankful and admits she feels as though this is her fault. Marlena thinks Maggie needs help, though she’s not the right person to help her. Maggie admits she doesn’t like Melanie, but Nick wants her to come live at her place. She cries that she knows she’s wrongly blaming the victim. Marlena thinks she could ask Melanie to move in, but make it temporary. This will make Nick happy and she won’t be stuck with Melanie. Maggie finds this helpful and leaves. Once she has gone, John agrees to see Dr. Taylor, but outside of a hospital. Once. Then he’ll take it from there. “This is not speed dating, John!” Marlena says if he does this just the one time, he’s out of her life.
In Marlena’s townhouse, John tells the killer to step aside, and maybe he’ll let the man live. Marlena begs John not to shoot but John cocks his gun. Marlena struggles with the killer and a gunshot rings out. Marlena goes down as the killer runs off, with John right behind him. John loses him and returns to Marlena, angry.
Bo and Hope arrive at the townhouse to dust for prints and discuss the killer who got away. Marlena and John argue and Bo asks why John was there. “Oh I was selling Girl Scout cookies and rang the doorbell.” Bo asks him not to be so sarcastic, so John tells Bo what really happened. Bo is glad John didn’t kill him, because then they’d have a dead perp and no word on who he’s working for! John finds Bo is wasting his time and thinks Salem PD is inept. Bo puts a guard outside Marlena’s door, which doesn’t calm John’s nerves. After Hope and Bo leave, Marlena chastises John for using his gun without even knowing if the babies were in the house. John is going out of his way to help her and her daughter but Marlena thinks he is taking it too far and needs help. She gives him an ultimatum. If he doesn’t get help, he’s out of her and her family’s life!
Outside Marlena’s townhouse, Bo and Hope are distressed that they haven’t found the killer. Hope doesn’t think Bo has been eating properly and wants to take him home for lunch. Sexual innuendos are abundant and they take off for home.
John meets Steve at the docks. Steve’s meeting with somebody who can identify Marino’s killer. John tells him to hurry, before he strikes again.
The killer rummages through Marlena’s townhouse and takes a call from somebody, saying he won’t leave until he finds out. When Marlena arrives, he hides. Marlena takes a call from John, who says he’s with his bounty hunter. She asks how things are with Brady, but he has no time for that. There’s a killer on the loose. Meanwhile, the killer gently takes the fireplace poker in his hand. Marlena worries about Sami, while the killer stalks her. He grabs her and pushes her up against a wall and demands to know where her daughter is - or she’s dead! Marlena doesn’t know where she is. “She was scared and left town. I don’t know where she is.” He tells her that Sami can ID him, and Marlena kicks him hard. He falls to the floor, and she quickly calls John. He picks up, from outside the pub still and as she says hello, the killer cuts the phone cord and wraps it around his hands. He asks again for Sami’s exact location but John quietly enters the room with a gun. The killer dashes around Marlena and holds the cord around her neck. John takes aim.
Nicole explains to John, at the mansion, that she cares about Brady, so that’s why she’s dispensing advice. John thinks that she’s getting into his business too much and tells her it’s a good thing she’s having this baby. It’ll give her something to do. “How many friends do you have,” she asks. He tells her, “Real or imaginary?” She thinks that if he and Brady got together, it would be good for the both of them but John wonders if this will be enough for Brady. Nicole doesn’t know, but thinks he should give it a shot. She plays her trump card – Marlena would love for him to do this. John grins, knowing what she’s doing and says he’ll keep it in mind.
