John follows Marlena to the Brady pub to apologize. Marlena wishes him a Happy New Year, thanks him for the apology, and kisses him.
John gets ready to leave the hospital after a session with Dr. Taylor. Dr. Taylor encouragingly says that the session went well, but John disagrees because he wanted to remember his past. He impatiently asks how long it will take, and then decides that he’s through with these sessions. Dr. Taylor urges John not to take a short-term view. John thinks all his memories are gone forever but Dr. Taylor reassures him that if he had no memory left, he'd have no brain left. She insists that his memories are just deeply hidden and suggests hypnosis to speed things along. John refuses, saying, “No way in hell!” Dr. Taylor understands his hesitation with losing control and suggests video taping the sessions. John says he'll get back to her and walks away.
Outside of the Brady pub, Tony and Marlena discuss New Year’s Eve plans. Marlena says she would like a quiet New Year’s at home and John walks by and agrees that he would like the same. John tells them that he's going to spend his evening at the Salem Inn alone. Marlena wishes him a Happy New Year. John looks slightly taken aback at Marlena’s indifference. He says thank you and walks into the pub. Frustrated, Marlena tells Tony that John has no feelings for her at all. Tony hugs her and wishes her a Happy New Year and walks off. Dr. Taylor walks by and asks Marlena if she has plans for this evening. Marlena says no and Dr. Taylor says maybe she can fix that. With John eavesdropping from the Brady pub, Dr. Taylor and Marlena make plans to go to Chez Rouge.
John and Marlena stand in front of the Brady Pub and wish each other a Merry Christmas. Marlena is glad that John is joining his family for Christmas Eve. Brady walks by and is surprised that John is smiling. John looks at Brady and repeats that Christmas Eve is meant to be spent with family, even if you don’t like them. Brady takes offense and tells Marlena to have a nice night as he tries to leave. Marlena reassures Brady that it’s just John’s sense of humor. John tells Brady that he wasn’t talking about him and reminds Brady that if he blows it with him, he’d lose points with Marlena. John asks Brady for a favor, and Brady agrees but John warns him to wait and hear what it is.
John, Marlena, and Brady stand in front of the DiMera mansion. John states that this is his family and he wants to show Stefano that he’s not broken and not alone. Stefano answers the door to warmly welcome them in. Nicole greets everyone and grabs Brady to tell him that if he doesn’t help her, he needs to get John to. Nicole tells Brady that she gave Dr. Baker an artifact worth $20,000 to tie him over for now but that it’s not enough. EJ walks by and tells Nicole that she looks upset. He coldly asks Brady why Nicole looks upset every time he is around. Nicole reassures EJ that everything is okay and she’s just emotional because of hormones. EJ gets a phone call and walks away for a few seconds. When he returns, Brady walks away. EJ says he has to take care of some emails for work and he’ll be back shortly.
Brady returns to Nicole as EJ walks away. Nicole pleads with Brady and says that she’ll lose EJ if he doesn’t help her. Meanwhile, Stefano offers John new cigars and says that he’s happy that John dropped by but asks why. Marlena and Tony observe them from a distance as Marlena wonders why Tony is here and not with Anna. Tony suspects that Stefano is up to something because he is pitting family against each other, with EJ at the top of the empire. Marlena tells Tony that John wanted to show Stefano that he was fine. Marlena wistfully says that this makes John finally human and emotional.
Meanwhile, Stefano tells John that he hopes they can put the past behind them. John tells him to keep on hoping. Stefano says it seems like there’s tension whenever the family comes together, even when they’re celebrating. John tells Stefano that he’s here for two reasons: One, he’s not afraid of Stefano but if he harms the people John is 'invested in', Stefano should be afraid of him, and two, John wishes Stefano a Merry Christmas. Stefano wishes him a Merry Christmas and John announces it’s time for him to leave. Nicole overhears and asks John if he’s going yet. Nicole walks John out into the foyer, and says that she needs his help with a surprise for EJ. When they’re alone, Nicole confesses that she needs a lot of money and she can’t tell him why. John tells her he can’t help her, but offers to set her up in a hotel and pay for a plane ticket anywhere.
Back in the Horton house, Chloe looks at Alice’s photos and Lucas asks if she’d like to have that many kids one day. Julie asks Maggie if she ever thought Lucas and Chloe would end up together. Maggie says no but she’s never seen Lucas so happy. They cheerfully agree that Alice had a good idea and look at the tree. The Bradys and Carvers enter the Horton house to begin celebrations. Bo tells Hope he had a little help finding Theo, and that he’d explain later. Everyone starts the traditional trimming of the tree for Alice to see in the morning. John observes and asks Marlena why she brought him here. Marlena answers that this is what Christmas is really about. John looks at the tree in thought and finally realizes how important it is to remember. Meanwhile, Maggie and Julie give Chloe and Lucas a box of ornaments, including a new one made for Chloe. She thanks them and goes to place it on the tree next to Lucas’ but it falls and breaks. Chloe apologizes but Lucas says the only thing that matters is that they’re together. Doug makes a toast to the family and plays the piano as Chloe sings “Silent Night.”
Dr. Taylor and John end their session and set up another for after Christmas. When John says he hopes she can spend the holidays with family, her face falls and she says her goodbyes. John grabs Marlena, on her way out of her office and asks how well she knows Charlotte’s family. Marlena only knew her father. John rants that he doesn’t know a thing about Charlotte. All she does is sit there, listening and nodding her head like a bobble head. Marlena laughs and tells him that he used to say the same thing about her! Possibly Dr. Taylor doesn’t want to pass too much information to him for fear of transference. When Marlena asks if he’s going to continue therapy, he asks why… "Does Dr. Taylor leave you a bit cold, too?” Marlena tells him she’ll be alone for the holidays and asks if he’d like to spend Christmas with her! He’ll consider it.
Once he’s gone, Charlotte arrives and tells Marlena that she understands why her father thought so highly of her. She’s happy fate has brought them together and tells her it’s her greatest hope that she can bring Marlena and John back together.
Later, John goes back to Charlotte and asks her what he should do about the holidays. She tells him they can discuss it in their next session. He brings up Marlena and Charlotte says her goal – and his - is for him to reconcile with Marlena.
John wanders through the park where Dr. Taylor finds him. He says he has a huge headache and Dr. Taylor asks if they can attempt biofeedback to address the pain. She tells him he did well today. He tells her he isn’t sure he can return to therapy, though the session was fine. He admits his fears about getting his old life back and says the old John seemed like a jerk. The only person he cares about is Blondie and he’d like to have her in his life again. She’s the reason he’s in therapy. “I’m doing this for her.” He asks if Dr. Taylor can help him. She’ll do her best!
At the pier, Stefano is astounded that his old friend Senior Fontaine does business this way now. When he’s asked for last words, Stefano says something in another language, and then a few men rush the Fontaine’s and everyone scrambles. EJ grabs a gun and Stefano grabs the diamonds, while Stefano’s men hold guns to the Fontaine’s heads. Stefano asks Senior Fontaine if he’s got any last words. He instructs Elvis to get the money and when one of Stefano’s thugs asks to ice them, Stefano says there is no rush. Wan says they weren’t going to kill Stefano or EJ. Stefano says his heart is full of the holiday spirit. He’s going to let them go spend Christmas with their families; but first, all those who come against him must learn a lesson. EJ winces as the men are beat up. Stefano tells EJ that he’s always prepared and notices how rattled EJ is. EJ says it doesn’t make for a pleasant evening, but Stefano never pretended that he was taking him out for ice cream. He urges EJ never to trust his adversary, especially if the person is his friend. EJ would have been at home, safe, he says, but Stefano calls this part of his job. EJ asks if this is going to happen with regularity. “Such a prince,” says Stefano. He was spoiled and pampered. EJ says he was spoiled, unlike Stefano, who had to fight for what he got. He has heard it all before. “Frankly, it bores me.” Stefano thinks it scares him and tells EJ he has no character. “Toughen up and pay your dues,” Stefano says. EJ doesn’t want to be scorned for not enjoying violence. They argue about why they’re working with these types and Stefano says he shows his love by protecting him and anyone with him. He asks that EJ never doubt him.
Brady paces at the park and finds a vial of cocaine in the snow. “What the…” John says it’s true. Once an addict, always an addict. Brady stomps on the cocaine and John sarcastically says he’s impressed, but starts to walk away. Brady tells John that it’s hard for him to look at him as a stranger. John wonders if Brady wants his pity, but Brady doesn’t. John wonders if the old John would have taken out a few billboards. His cup runneth over, he says. Brady used to have a dad who cared and had faith in him. “Now I don’t.” Brady tells John to go tell everyone that he is a junkie. He’d rather deal with that than try to make John care. John stutters. “Brady. I'm trying to care.” He’s seeing a shrink. They discuss who and John likes the woman. “She’s smart and doesn’t judge me.” Brady is happy for him. John says he’s glad Brady’s clean. He suggested that he wasn’t but in his own way, he’s happy for him. “I’m proud,” John says, before leaving.
When Marlena meets Dr. Taylor, she thinks there is a mistake. Dr. Taylor is much older and a man. Dr. Taylor tells Marlena that she has taken over his practice, which upsets Marlena further. “Without notifying me,” she asks. John asks Blondie not to get caught up in technicalities but Marlena is angry with John because he didn’t want her to see his files but didn’t mind Dr. Taylor looking at them. Dr. Taylor says she left Marlena messages at her office, but Marlena claims she had a temp. Dr. Taylor tells Marlena that her father thought highly of her and she thinks she can help John. Her only reservation is the relationship between the two - the blurred boundaries. John says that they met in the park and he felt that it was freeing. Marlena says that John needs a battery of tests, not just talk therapy, which makes Dr. Taylor ask Marlena to respect the confidentiality of the doctor-patient relationship. John is willing to see Dr. Taylor, he admits, if Blondie backs off. He takes a call and leaves. Marlena tells Dr. Taylor that this is a game to John. Dr. Taylor agrees and comments that she manipulated his feelings for Marlena to get him into therapy. Dr. Taylor is leaving her practice at St. Clair’s and says she’s affiliating with University Hospital. Marlena is stunned but congratulates her and asks if she can help make the translation easier. John returns and tells the doctors he was right. They do have a lot to discuss. He’s surprised that she’s moving to Salem and working at University Hospital. Surprise crosses Marlena’s face as Dr. Taylor announces her office is right next to Marlena’s!
