Kayla, Steve, Stephanie, and the baby arrive at the pub. Steve asks why Stephanie doesn't seem happy. Just then, Max appears with Chelsea. He says that Stephanie isn't happy because Philip's not there! Max makes some sarcastic remarks about being surprised that Stephanie isn't spending the holiday with Philip. As they get into it, Melanie walks in. Stephanie points to her, saying Melanie's the reason that she has 'moved on'! Stephanie walks away. Chelsea tells Max that she's sorry. Max and Melanie talk, and he notes that it must be hard for her to have her first Christmas without Trent. She says that it was the only time he acted like a father. She and Max joke a bit, but when she brings up Stephanie he won't discuss it. Max goes to check on some food and Melanie wanders over to where Stephanie and Chelsea are wrapping gifts. Melanie blurts out that Stephanie isn't the only one who's moved on - Max has too - with Chelsea! After Melanie walks away, Steph asks Chelsea if it's true. Chelsea says they're just friends - she's been comforting him. Stephanie is visibly shaken by the idea, and Chelsea says if something was going on between them, she would tell her. Stephanie replies that she would definitely have a problem with that!
Julie and Doug arrive at the hospital. Julie acknowledges to Maggie that it will be a difficult Christmas for her in light of everything that has happened with Nick. Just then, Stefano walks in. Julie expresses her disgust! Stefano asks her if there is a problem - she tells him his charity is not welcome at the hospital! He reminds her that charity starts at home - and he feels very much at home there seeing as he owns a lot of stock. Doug tells him no one wants him there - he should move on! Steve, Kayla and family arrive, as do others, and Steve tells Stefano to get out or he'll throw him out!
Lexi and family arrive at the hospital in time to witness Steve threatening Stefano, and Stefano warning that he won't make his substantial donation to the hospital. Lexi tells Steve she'll handle it, then asks Stefano to go. Stefano agrees - if that's what she wants. They exchange curt 'Merry Christmases' and Stefano speaks to Theo. After he leaves, Abe says, "Crisis averted." Doug is in Santa gear by now, and the reading of the Christmas story commences.
Stephanie brings hot chocolate and coffee to her parents, and overreacts when she drops one. Steve asks what’s going on and Stephanie explains that Kate went back to the hospital as her cancer has spread and she’s worried about Philip. She started to wonder how she’d feel if it happened to her and wanted to see them. They comfort her and Stephanie wishes she could do more for Philip.
Outside the pub, Steve is upset to hear that he has nothing new from his contact. He goes into the pub and Kayla says she and Marlena were just discussing John. Kayla leaves to change the baby’s diaper while Marlena and Steve discuss Eric. She tells him Eric has a chance to go to Switzerland for the holidays, so she doubts he’ll come to Salem. It’ll be a quiet Christmas this year, she says. They discuss the divorce and Marlena thinks positively about it, thinking it gave John motivation to get help. She leaves and Kayla returns. Steve and Kayla kiss and he tells her how sexy she looks. He wants to go home, put Joe down, get Kayla liquored up and put on some Barry White. Kayla giggles and they start kissing again.
John meets Steve at the docks. Steve’s meeting with somebody who can identify Marino’s killer. John tells him to hurry, before he strikes again.
Kayla finds Steve working at the pub. He can’t show her his work and closes his laptop. He explains he’s doing basic PI work for John Black and has to keep it under wraps. Kayla is surprised as Steve tells her he’s tracking Marino’s killer. He doesn’t need her freaking out about this now and reminds her that this is his job. Kayla worries and Steve apologizes but he doesn’t want her to second-guess his choices. Kayla worries about the consequences. Kayla calls John strange and full of problems. She doesn’t want Steve working with him and calls him a loose cannon. Steve recalls that people used to say that about him. Bottom line is, John’s heart is in the right place, Steve says. She admits she overreacts because she has lost him before. They profess their love for each other and Steve snuggles in close. Kayla kisses him and she asks what he knows. He opens his notes and shows her a police sketch as described by Sami.
Inside Roman's office, Roman, Bo and Steve discuss how they're disgusted by the rat, Mariano. Bo writes suspect names on a board. He starts with Caroline, then Max. Steve balks at Max, who wouldn't let Ma take the fall. Bo writes Nick Fallon on the board. One of Trent's buddies shot Nick in Paris. Perhaps he killed in retaliation? Roman's not so sure, but listens as Steve brings up Nicole Walker. He tells Roman that she was married to Trent. Roman's surprised. "This just keeps getting better and better all the time!" Bo thinks Trent could have blackmailed Nicole to get money from her for gambling. They wonder who else could be a suspect. Hope walks in. "What about Melanie Layton?" The men agree that Melanie was treated like garbage at Trent's hands and this wouldn't be a surprise if she killed him. Stephanie arrives and the officers put the board away and let her in. Stephanie's worried about Caroline. Steve tells her not to worry as Caroline's not the only suspect. He promises Caroline will come out okay. Bo asks Stephanie off the record if Melanie's capable of killing her father. Melanie opens the door. "Why don't you just ask me yourself?" Stephanie leaves the room while Melanie asks if she's a suspect and tells them she didn't kill Trent. Bo tells her she can't leave town. She's a suspect!
Stephanie finds Max outside Roman's office. He shares the fight he had with Melanie and she tells him that Melanie's in Roman's office.
At the crime scene, Caroline cries to Bo that she didn't kill Trent, that he was already stabbed when he came to her. Bo tells her it's alright and he'll be with her every step of the way. Hope hugs Bo and tells him they'll get through this, as Caroline is carted off. Hope tells him they need to play by the rules. She knows a lot of people wanted to see Trent dead. She calls Max.
Back at the crime scene, Steve arrives. Hope wants him to continue to investigate Trent's past. They both know that Caroline didn't do it but want to add Nicole to the suspect list. They're sure there are more. Steve doesn't like to speak ill of the dead, but he says he's sure many will be better off without him around. The coroner, Jordan, gives Hope a report. Trent had a bloody lip, he was punched, his wallet was stolen and he was scratched by someone with sharp fingernails. We see a montage of Nick looking at his bruised knuckles, Melanie looking at Trent's wallet and Nicole looking at her fingernails, before resting her hands upon her pregnant belly. Steve says to Hope, "I bet my good eye it wasn't Caroline." They find a piece of clothing on Trent's body. Hope hopes this will lead them to Trent's real killer.
