From the cabin, Chloe calls Kate and tells her she can't accept, but Kate wants her to wear it on her wedding day, so Chloe calls it an honor and thanks her mother-in-law to be.
Daniel arrives at Kate's bedside and she thanks him for bringing the gift to Chloe. Kate's anxious to get home in time for Christmas. They talk about how skeptical she has been with Chloe getting together with Lucas and it was important for her to show that she now believes they'll make it together as a couple. Kate sees his hand and asks what happened. Daniel makes light of it and tells her he won't let it happen again.
Daniel goes in to see Kate and asks how she's feeling. She says she isn't ready to deck the halls yet, but she's hanging in there. She tells Daniel she's looking forward to being with her family - and him! He suggests that they watch a movie or thumb wrestle. Kate laughs and says she has a gift - a necklace - for Chloe, and asks him to drop it off at the Horton cabin for her! Kate tells him that Bill Horton, Lucas's father, gave it to her, and she wants to give it to the special woman in Lucas's life. Daniel says he'll do it after Kate mentions that Lucas is taking Chloe to Chicago and he can just let himself in and drop it off.
Lucas visits Kate in the hospital and she tells him to go be with Chloe. He tells her how much it means to him that she’s fine with him marrying Chloe. Kate finds irony in the way she treated Chloe, knowing she’ll owe Chloe her life. Lucas says Chloe’s happy to do this, like her sister, Joy did for her. Kate worries about the risks and wishes they could search for a new donor. Lucas admits after her pre-op exam, Chloe appeared nervous.
Daniel goes to Kate’s room and she is grateful for another chance. She finds it hard not to touch him, she admits, so he kisses her on the head. Kate thanks him for saving her and when she asks after Chloe, he reassures Kate that Chloe’s fine and not having reservations. Kate says she couldn’t forgive herself if something should happen to Chloe.
Lucas wheels Chloe into Kate’s room, where she tells Kate she’s not nervous and calls this the first day of Kate’s new life! Lucas leaves with Chloe and Daniel stays behind.
Daniel sits with Kate in her room and tells her he’ll be with her every step of the way. A nurse calls him away and outside the room, he frowns as he reads Chloe’s pre-op file. “That’s not right. It can’t be…”
Chloe and Lucas arrive at the hospital and Daniel plays down the issue with Chloe’s white blood cell count and asks Lucas to see Kate while he examines Chloe.
Lucas visits Kate and while she sleeps, he tells her that tomorrow’s the big day. He says Chloe’s giving them all a second chance.
In Kate’s hospital room, Kate tells Chloe that she knows she’d help her if she could. Kate asks for Daniel, but they haven’t seen him. Kate thinks he’s finding it hard to face her. Lucas gives Kate one of Will’s first art projects, which is a plaster cast imprint of his hand, when he was young. Kate tells Chloe that there was a time when she and Lucas didn’t get along. Chloe had no idea. Kate says she knows when Lucas is hiding something, so Lucas comes clean and tells Kate about the engagement. Kate thought it was something like that. An upset Chloe runs out, giving them time alone. Chloe returns and Kate asks her not to presume to know what she was thinking. She admits she was overwhelmed but is in a position to look at the bigger picture. She can’t micromanage her sons' lives. She can see that Chloe makes Lucas happy and thanks her! Chloe is relieved and Daniel, who has been on the computer in the lounge, looking for a way to save Kate, arrives with a way for Kate to get the marrow transplant from Chloe. He has a colleague who might have a way to treat Chloe’s marrow and blood to be transplanted to Kate. The issues are that not only hasn’t it been approved yet, it could cause considerable risks. Kate can’t risk this and asks Lucas to go. Chloe tells Kate that she can’t force her to accept the donation, but she can’t stop her from making it. Kate grins and calls Chloe a venerable woman. “That means you’re one tough cookie,” says Lucas. Chloe and Daniel leave and Kate tries to talk Lucas out of doing this. It’ll compromise her immune system. Lucas reminds her that Daniel can be trusted.
Kate wakes up to Philip and says she must look like hell. She quietly asks him to go back to work, but he refuses. She promises she’s fighting like hell. Daniel arrives and they all agree to fight together. He has just received the family’s results. Kate feels a sharp pain and gasps. Philip grabs her hand while Daniel begs for her to take morphine. The pain subsides and she refuses medicine, preferring instead to feel alive. She cries as she tells Philip that this is bad. She has to face facts. If the treatment becomes too much, she asks Philip to respect whatever decision she makes. Philip uncomfortably agrees to be strong for the rest of the family. Philip leaves Daniel and Kate alone and Kate tells Daniel he doesn’t have to stick around. She asks if he has eaten tonight and he jokingly threatens to write in her file that she’s a nag. Kate admits how afraid she is and how personal this is getting for him and wonders if he’s putting too much pressure on himself because of his wife. Daniel says this is all about her, but Kate thinks he’s lying! Later, Daniel brings her a garish Christmas bulb. They laugh over it, and Kate admits she has always taken the holidays for granted. She’ll do it right if she gets another. Daniel is sure she will. A nurse arrives with a message. The results are in. “I know what I want for Christmas,” whispers Kate.
