Melanie tells Bo and Hope that they enjoy their jobs just a little too much but Hope tells her this is an investigation, not a game. Bo thinks she's trying to impede it. She hands over the letter, Bo and Hope read it and tell Melanie she can go, but can't leave town. They bag the letter as evidence and she tells them she's done being harassed about her father's death, and will file a complaint if they don’t leave her alone. Hope gives her a number to call to complain about them and this upsets Melanie, who runs out. They find another letter, inside the original, and Bo opens it.

Back at the mansion, Nicole says to EJ that she wished he'd have said something nice about her eyes and personality, but he says he loves both and worries about Johnny. Nicole becomes nervous. She's practical and a lot of her issues could be solved by marrying him, but she worries he's trying to claim ownership, like Stefano DiMera. EJ laughs. He just offered her everything she needed and she put somebody above herself. "Motherhood is bringing out the best in you," he tells her with a kiss. Nicole doesn't think EJ's being like his father, but that he's a great father. A doorbell interrupts. Nicole goes to get it. Hope and Bo arrive with questions about Trent's murder. EJ stays as her lawyer and Bo asks what happened the night of Trent's murder. EJ asks what they're up to and Hope says they can prove Nicole lied to them about what happened the night of Trent's murder. Bo thinks she ran into Robbins the night of the murder, but she denies it. EJ tells them they're harassing Nicole, but Bo has proof.

Hope and Bo arrive to the pub. Hope asks where Melanie is and Max tells her she's up in her room. Hope goes to get her while Max tells Bo that he may have made a mistake, sticking up for Melanie. "She's starting to look guilty," he says.

Downstairs at the pub, Hope returns and feels bad for Max, who isn't defending what Melanie did, but he says he's still worried about her. He can't help it. Bo understands this. After all, she's his sister. They spot Melanie leaving the pub and dash out to stop her. She's about to leave town when Bo tells her that her father left a will. He convinces her to stay to hear it read.

At Bo's office, Trent's lawyer, Mr. Gregory Berman, reads the will to Melanie and Bo. Trent died insolvent. Melanie's not surprised. The lawyer says Trent had his hand in Nick's prototype, but that's about all. Max is given a red box, so Bo takes it for his brother and leaves. Mr. Berman reveals to Melanie that there was an envelope to be read in the event of his death. He isn't sure he can give it to her as her name is not on it. Apparently, Melanie has known him for a while and talks him into letting her see it and says he's counting on her to share it with the police after she reads it. She tears it open but is interrupted by Bo and Hope, who ask for the letter! They want to know what's in it.

Bo tries to stop them from fighting but when they refuse to listen, Bo says he'll take over the bar! Stephanie tells Bo she'll drop by the police department for a sworn statement. She tells Max she refuses to cry about this and storms off. Max is confused as to why she'd even cry, and Bo tells him that she's in love with an idiot and asks him to apologize to Stephanie. Max lashes out at Bo, but Bo has to take a call, and leaves momentarily. Stephanie returns and Max apologizes to Stephanie, who in turn apologizes. She tells him he doesn't see what Melanie's like and worries she'll get away with killing Trent, but though Max knows she could be right, Melanie's so scared and alone. Later, they all sit at a table and Stephanie starts up again, so Bo tries to stop them from rehashing the past. It's his job to judge whether or not Melanie did this… with facts!

Melanie and Philip arrive downstairs and Stephanie says, "What a surprise Max, she wasn't alone, after all!" Philip finds Bo and tells him that he knew Melanie had Trent's wallet, after his death. He didn't realize it mattered to the police, and Bo lashes out that this worries him. Philip talked things over with Melanie first and says she tried to get him to keep quiet about it. When Melanie starts talking, and confessing to what happened that she recalls, in the cemetery, Max asks her to stop until she gets a lawyer. Bo tells her to shut up and Melanie says she's leaving town. Max tells her she can't go, but she walks out of the pub, and Bo says to Max, "So, Stephanie was right. Melanie confessed!" Max still stands up for Melanie and how she was brought up.

Max tells them that he and Stephanie broke up and that she's convinced Melanie killed Trent. Bo and Hope feel bad but they've got to do their job. Max lies that Melanie never confessed anything to him, and Stephanie walks into Roman's office and asks, "What?" She accuses him of calling her a liar, and Bo asks her to wait outside. Hope goes with her and Stephanie cries on Hope's shoulder as Stephanie rants about Melanie. Hope thinks Max is struggling with his own identity. He wants to do what's right with Melanie and his family.

Inside the office, Bo asks Max what he's doing. Max is defending his sister, he claims, but Bo tells him that he's not being noble. He has turned his back on the truth and is ruining his life. "Is that what you want?" Max reminds Bo that he did the same thing with his brother Philip! He rants that he wouldn't put up with Stephanie trying to ruin his life, but Bo says that's not what she's doing. Max swears Melanie is not guilty, but Bo reminds him that he doesn't even know Melanie. Max tells Bo that he was lucky to have been adopted. Melanie got ripped off. Bo lets him leave, and Max bumps into Hope outside the office. He asks after Stephanie and Hope says she's gone and she thinks he ought to go after her.

What have you done, you fool?

Stephanie recounts Melanie's tale about seeing Trent at the cemetery, and how Melanie thinks she may have killed him. Stephanie has nothing nice to say about Melanie, but admits to feeling terrible about spilling the beans. Bo and Hope reassure her she did the right thing and they're going to talk to Melanie.
