Hope tells Bo they’ve another meeting with the Christmas food drive, right there at home, yet their Christmas tree has no ornaments on it. She knows how hard he’s working and figures one of them needs to quit their job! Bo rants that they’ve no time to discuss this, and rushes upstairs to get the decorations, but takes a tumble. He returns later, with the decorations and the two decorate the tree. Hope notes that the star isn’t up yet but Bo thinks Ciara can put up the star when she gets home. Hope says, “No no, I’ll do it myself,” but Bo knows that’s Hope talk for ‘I want you to do it, now!’ He gets the ladder and returns with it. It’s rickety, and he wobbles on it, and when he can’t reach to straighten the star, he falls off the ladder, crashing and hitting his head on the table below.
Bo arrives at Cheatin’ Heart to give Max the box that Trent left for Max in his will. Max doesn’t want it, claiming Trent wasn’t his father. Bo says he’ll have to be the one to get rid of it but he’s sorry that this whole thing hurt him so. Max says it’s over, but Bo doesn’t think so, and reminds Max that he has family if he needs them. Hope wants to have him over for dinner, he says, embarrassed.
Bo meets Brady at the pub with a hug and invites him to his place on the weekend. They discuss how big Ciara has gotten and Bo’s rough times and how strange it has been reuniting with John. Bo tells Brady to stay away from Nicole. She is more dangerous than before, now that she’s involved with the DiMeras. Brady asks how well Bo knows Nicole. Bo calls her trouble and now that she has Elvis under her spell… He thought EJ was smarter than that. Brady thinks time will tell if Nicole turns her life around. He doesn’t think EJ’s much like Stefano and tells a curious Bo that he’s not interested in Nicole other than for friendship. Bo tells him that EJ’s the one who told everyone that John was being kept by Stefano, but EJ still has a lot of sins to atone for.
At the pub, Maggie tells Hope that it was devastating to tell Jessica and Joshua Fallon that their son Nick was arrested for murder. She cries and blames herself for not taking better care of their son. Chelsea asks Bo if Nick can get off easy, but Bo says his behavior after the murder makes things worse. Chelsea wants to visit Nick, but he needs psychiatric help, so she has to wait. Bo says Nick was once obsessed with her, but Chelsea denies it. She says they had a relationship. Talk turns to Kate and Bo asks Chelsea to join in the celebration of Kate’s release from University Hospital. Maggie goes off to stop by Mickey’s office to check on Nick’s defense.
Brady shows up at the pub to Chloe and Lucas’ table. Chloe asks Brady to join them, much to Lucas’ chagrin and Lucas brings up Brady being clean for a year. In a jealous display, Lucas brings up buying the house for him and Chloe. Chloe tells Brady that Kate’s going to arrive for a celebration because she’s being released from the hospital today. “She has cancer.” Brady’s shocked and apologetic toward Lucas. He gets up and takes a call from Nicole, and she tells him that EJ’s on a plane to Argentina and there’s something wrong with the baby. He agrees to go get her and after he leaves, Chloe accuses Lucas of being jealous. They laugh as he admits it, but Chloe calls Brady her past and Lucas her future. They kiss.
Bo and Hope arrive at the townhouse to dust for prints and discuss the killer who got away. Marlena and John argue and Bo asks why John was there. “Oh I was selling Girl Scout cookies and rang the doorbell.” Bo asks him not to be so sarcastic, so John tells Bo what really happened. Bo is glad John didn’t kill him, because then they’d have a dead perp and no word on who he’s working for! John finds Bo is wasting his time and thinks Salem PD is inept. Bo puts a guard outside Marlena’s door, which doesn’t calm John’s nerves. After Hope and Bo leave, Marlena chastises John for using his gun without even knowing if the babies were in the house. John is going out of his way to help her and her daughter but Marlena thinks he is taking it too far and needs help. She gives him an ultimatum. If he doesn’t get help, he’s out of her and her family’s life!
Outside Marlena’s townhouse, Bo and Hope are distressed that they haven’t found the killer. Hope doesn’t think Bo has been eating properly and wants to take him home for lunch. Sexual innuendos are abundant and they take off for home.
Melanie flies over the balcony of the hotel, screaming and holding on for life. Meanwhile, Stephanie and Philip watch in horror, below, as Bo grabs Melanie’s arm and pulls her in, promising she’ll be alright. Hope makes a call for backup while training her gun on Nick. She tells him to back away from Melanie and Bo, but he’s too concerned with Melanie’s safety. Philip notices a fire escape and starts climbing. Hope leaves Nick for one moment and he grabs his drugs and heads to the door. She arrests him for the murder of Trent Robbins. Philip grabs Melanie, just in time, and Stephanie yells that the cops are there.
Inside the room, Hope asks if Nick understands his rights. His only concern is Melanie, who they say is going to be fine.
At the station, Nick figures Bo and Hope can have him plead manslaughter and get the sentence reduced. He feels terrible about Trent and after Willow, he didn’t think anyone would understand what happened. They ask why he tortured Melanie with the calls, and he says he needed her near him. She wanted to leave town. Bo tells him Melanie lied about wanting to marry Nick. “You let her think she killed her father.” Nick responds by saying that Melanie could have killed him anyway. Hope and Bo are incredulous. Nick claims to have tried to save her and begs Hope, his family, for help. Hope tells him of course she’ll help him. “But justice has to be served.” He makes his one call to Maggie, while Hope looks on, sadly. Bo apologizes to Fancy Face for this being his first act as Police Commissioner.
Outside the office, Stephanie can’t believe they could have been so wrong. They hug, and Max shows up. Nick hasn’t been the same since Willow died,” he says, and Chelsea comes in behind him. She faults herself. Crying, she blames herself, but Max tells her something pushed him over the edge. Melanie walks in and everyone becomes quiet. Stephanie tells Max she’s fine and she thanks Philip. He hugs her and apologizes for what she went through. Stephanie and Chelsea blame Melanie for Nick having to go to jail for the rest of his life. Max yells at them while Melanie tells them that Nick tortured her. Chelsea says she has lied to the police and obstructed justice, while Stephanie tells Melanie that she lied to him and ruined his whole life.
Maggie rushes into the police station and into Bo’s office, taking Nick in a big hug. Hope realizes that Nick used his one call to call Maggie and not his lawyer.
Nick apologizes to Maggie, at the station, and Maggie knew he was drinking and taking the pain pills. She should have been there for him. Maggie asks Hope if Nick will be convicted. Maggie sobs as Bo tells her Nick will definitely go to prison. “No, no, no,” she repeats, horrified. Nick’s mug shots are taken and Maggie says for him to hang in there. Uncle Mickey’s on his way. Nick walks by Melanie and tells her he loves her. He apologizes to Max for hurting her and leaves, as Melanie cries. Chelsea calls Melanie pathetic, because she can’t tell him she’s sorry, too. Melanie asks Max if he’s mad at her as well. “Please say you’re not," she cries, and Max hugs her close. Chelsea and Stephanie cry as Nick is led away by Hope and Maggie.
Hope and Bo agree that Nick is their killer, not Melanie. He urges Hope to go home since Nick’s her cousin, but she can’t leave the police department and beats herself up for not knowing what was going on with Nick, sooner. She feels bad for not reaching out to him but will be there for him now. Bo receives a call and tells Hope they may have a lead on where Nick is. He traces Nick’s credit cards and finds out where they are.
