Salem's state

We all know Salem is located somewhere in the Midwest, but the state was never mentioned onscreen.

Some Days fans believe it's in Illinois, but others think it could be in Ohio or maybe Indiana.

Just like the Simpsons' hometown of Springfield, no one will ever know.

So the question is: Why did Salem never have a state in the first place?

For a long time, I thought Salem was in Illinois or Indiana too; but because the town is a "shipping" town with a dock and all that, I'm thinkin' it's somewhere on the East coast like in Massachusetts or something.
