Stephen Says Goodbye! Thursday, May 01 2008

Stephen arrives and is told of the tragedy his family is suffering. Katie begins to reject Storm's gift.

In her hospital room, Katie sobs hysterically as Donna and Brooke try to get her to calm down. Bridget says, "She needs to breathe!" Outside the room, Stephen arrives and Eric intercepts him. He explains that Katie had a heart transplant. Stephen is shocked. Eric points the way to the room and tells him to get a gown and sanitizer before going in! As Stephen makes his way to Katie's bedside, he proclaims that he wishes he could take her place. He then asks where their brother is?! Brooke and Donna tell him that Storm was very brave in what he did for Katie. "He's dead. He shot himself!" As Stephen begins to cry, Bridget explains that they could not find a heart donor for Katie - so Storm gave her his! Stephen is overcome by this news and doubles over as though he suffering a physical blow!

As Stephen struggles to come to terms with the news of Storm's death, the girls try to help him. He turns and tells Katie how glad he is that she's still here. Bridget says Katie needs to regain her strength, and Brooke and Donna lead Stephen from the room. Out in the corridor, Stephen says he needs to see his son. Eric comes over and embraces Donna. She cries that she didn't want Katie to see them all upset, and says she is so worried about her dad! She tells Eric that Brooke has taken Stephen to say goodbye to Storm. Down in the morgue, Stephen approaches the gurney on which Storm lies, and lifts the sheet briefly, before sitting down heavily on a stool nearby. He sobs as he tells his son that people who don't know him won't understand what he did - but he does. "It's the way you've always been. You always looked after his sisters so well. But it wasn't your job - it was mine! And I went away and left it all up to you! For what it's worth, I'll take care of them now. I'll be here and you can rest!" Brooke embraces her father. Back in Katie's room, she is visibly upset!

As Nick paces the hospital corridor, Bridget approaches. He notes that she hasn't let any of this sink in yet. She says she is afraid to - she has to be strong! He tells her she is doing great! Stephen, meanwhile, heads back into Katie's room. He sits down beside her and tells her that Storm loved her so much to do what he did for her. He tries to make the agitated Katie relax by telling her softly that what Storm did was a gift, given out of his love for her. "He loved you!" Suddenly Katie begins to moan, Stephen asks her what's wrong and a nurse comes in. "What's wrong Katie, do you feel sick?" The doctors are all paged to Katie's room. As Brooke and Donna panic, Bridget tells them to wait outside! In the room, Bridget notes that it looks like Katie's body might be rejecting the heart! As the Logan sisters come into the room, the doctor explains that Katie has all the signs of rejection. He explains that they will adjust the dosage of her medications, but then it's a waiting game. He explains that Storm had a healthy heart, and if the rejection becomes chronic, it won't be due to a flaw in the heart. He says medicine can only do so much, sometimes it comes down to will. He suggests that perhaps Katie doesn't want to accept the heart. As Nick informs Eric outside in the hallway, that something serious is going on with Katie, inside the room, Katie's sisters and father beg her to accept the heart and fight to live! Stephen tells Katie he understands that she is angry, but the heart didn't come from a place of guilt or depression, it came from love. Brooke reminds Katie that Storm would do it all over again. "He loved you enough to give you his heart! Do you love him enough to accept it?!" She tells her sister it's a way she can make his sacrifice worth something. "If you can't do it for yourself - you do it for him!" Katie then struggles to speak, saying, "It was wrong!"
