Without a Miracle, Katie Will Die... Friday, April 25 2008

News spreads that Katie has been shot; Katie's wounds are too extensive for repair.

It’s immediate chaos at Ashley’s house, as Katie, who has busted in on Storm holding a gun, is in near-hysterics. She’s trying to get the gun away from Storm, thinking he was going to shoot Ashley. Storm is trying to keep Katie from taking the gun, insisting that she doesn’t know what’s going on and wanting to explain. Katie won’t give up. She and Storm wrestle over the gun. Suddenly the gun goes off. Katie falls to the floor, the front of her shirt covered with blood. Ashley rushes to call 9-1-1 while Storm hovers over Katie, apologizing. “I’m so sorry. Why’d I bring that gun…?” he says.

Nick is alone when Bridget pops in. “You don’t look so happy to see me,” she says. When he insists that he is happy to see her, she’s skeptical, saying he’s not his happy-go-lucky self. Bridget plants a kiss on him, then flops onto the couch. She learns that Katie has gone to Ashley's. Bridget says she thinks Storm and Ashley would be good together, but Nick doesn’t share that opinion. But before they can really get into it, Bridget receives a call from the hospital with news that Katie’s been shot! She and Nick race to the hospital to be with her.

Brooke and Donna are at the office, having a chat about Storm and Ashley and Katie. Donna believes that Ridge would love Storm if he could just see how wonderful Storm really is. Brooke adds that she hopes Ashley sees that Storm would never hurt anyone again. They’re busy musing how lucky Ashley would be if she fell for Storm when Brooke’s phone rings. It’s Bridget, with news that Katie’s been hurt.

The ambulance arrives at Ashley’s. Storm is near tears as the paramedics work on Katie. “Hurry up! Hurry up!” he shouts, holding his head in his hands. He sits by Katie’s side in the ambulance, begging her to hang in there. She opens her eyes, but quickly closes them again. They arrive at the hospital and Katie is wheeled directly into surgery. Bridget and Nick arrive and demand to know what happened. Storm, upset, cries, “I shot Katie. I shot my baby sister.” Bridget rushes off to check on Katie, and Nick sidles up to Storm. “You better pray that girl’s all right,” he threatens. Things get heated between Nick and Storm as Nick demands answers that Storm can’t give. Brooke and Donna arrive, wanting to know what happened. Nick forces Storm to give the details. The sisters are shocked and appalled at the thought that he’d brought a gun to Ashley’s house. He insists to everyone that it was all an accident and he didn’t even know the gun was loaded.

Meanwhile, Ridge has arrived at Ashley's house, only to receive the news from Ashley that Katie's been shot. “How did this happen?! Who did this to her?!” Ridge demands. “Her brother,” Ashley answers somberly. The police come to comb the “crime scene.” Tearfully, Ashley recounts what happened. She, too, insists that it was an accident. “I don’t care if it was an accident or not. It’s time Storm Logan was held accountable,” Ridge says.

In the Operating Room, things are looking really bad for Katie. The surgeon sends Bridget out to collect the family. The bullet has nicked the heart muscle, causing severe damage. The damage can’t be repaired. Katie is only alive by a heart pump. Bridget explains that the pump is not life support and Katie can only be kept alive long enough for everyone to say their goodbyes. But Brooke is in denial. “Miracles have happened here,” she says. “Katie is not going to die.” Bridget brings up the remote possibility of a heart transplant. Brooke is all for it: “Go! Go make this happen!” she orders. Brooke and Donna sit at Katie’s bedside and talk to her, begging her to be strong and stay with them. As Brooke sobs, Nick steps in and consoles her.

Out in the corridor, Bridget is on the phone begging for a transplant. The surgeon overhears the conversation and expresses her disbelief at what Bridget’s trying. She tries to get Bridget to “be realistic,” and Bridget blows, insisting that she has to find a donor for Katie. However, after a few minutes, Bridget comes back into Katie’s room and breaks the news: there is no donor. Brooke, Donna, and Bridget all burst into tears.
