A young Donna spent much of her energy trying to look after her little sister Katie. Katie had low self-esteem and flawed looks, but this didn't stop Donna from convincing Rocco Carner to date her. At the time, Donna was involved with Mark, but soon opened her eyes to the fact that he was not for her. After ending the relationship, she went on to work as a model for Tommy Boyland. As work went on, Boyland sent her to an agent named Nick Preston who convinced her to pose for a European magazine in the nude. When Bill Spencer caught a glimpse of the photos, he decided to publish them in an American magazine. Outraged, Donna teamed up with Nick and Rocco to get revenge on Bill. They hatched a plan to get photos of a nude Bill for one of Nick's magazines. Later, Donna came clean about this plot and tried to get Bill to transfer her father to LA. This failed, as did her hasty relationship with Thorne Forrester.
Donna left the city, rarely returning until 2006. On Donna's return, she began meddling in Brooke's marriage to Nick and encouraging her to reunite with Ridge. Brooke would not budge and Donna announced her intentions of pursuing Ridge, which were granted a blessing from Brooke. When her pursuit was on the verge of its goal, however, Brooke's marriage to Nick collapsed and she went running to her former lover. Broken over losing love when it had come so close to her, she sided with Nick after she witnessed Stephanie's attack on Jackie. With her as a witness, Nick and Jackie took over Forrester Creations while Donna became the company's new spokesmodel. Since then, she has been a useful ally to Jackie in manipulating the love lives of the young Forrester's in a bid to maintain the power balance.
One night, Donna, who was babysitting Brooke's children, left them alone when she mistakenly thought Brooke had come home. This error prompted Stephanie to call Child Protective Services to have Brooke's children taken away. For revenge, Donna sought out the romantic interest of Stephanie's son, Thorne, and wooed him into marriage plans.
On Donna & Thorne's wedding day, however, Donna's sister Katie overheard Donna tell Jackie that she didn't love Thorne and it was all a revenge plot. Katie told Thorne the truth and he called off the wedding at the altar.
Since, Donna has found some comfort and romance in Thorne's father (Stephanie's husband), Eric Forrester. They wed, much to Eric's family's dismay. Shortly after the wedding, the son Donna gave up for adoption came to town. While they are forming a close bond, Donna is keeping him a secret from Eric.

Donna tells Brooke she thinks Stephanie killed Eric, but Brooke doesn’t think so. Marcus comes in and overhears. He insists Owen did it, but Donna defends him. Brooke explains Donna’s theory, but Marcus doesn’t buy it and doesn’t think Stephanie would do that. Donna lists all of Stephanie’s evil deeds throughout the past few years, but Marcus still isn’t swayed. Brooke doesn’t buy it either, but Donna asks what if she just hit rock bottom and lost her senses? Brooke says it would have taken a lot of planning on Steph’s part and Donna points to Stephanie setting Brooke up with Andy and says that took weeks of manipulation. Marcus asks if Stephanie is that much of a beast and Brooke tries to downplay it, but Donna says Stephanie’s actions don’t deserve to be sugar coated and wonders what she is truly capable of. Marcus still thinks Owen is guilty, but Donna says the only crime Owen is guilty of is caring too much about her. Marcus abruptly tells his mother he has somewhere he has to be and leaves.
Donna and Brooke continue to discuss the possibility of Stephanie poisoning Eric. Donna thinks Steph has the most motive to bring her down, but Brooke doesn’t think she would go that far. Stephanie knocks on the door and enters. Brooke leaves to attend a conference call and Stephanie taunts Donna about Owen. Donna thinks Stephanie is trying to pin this on her because she is the one who did it. Donna lays out her theory and Stephanie thinks she’s gone off the deep end because, “guilt will do that to a person”. Donna wonders why Stephanie went after Eric to get back at her and Stephanie laughs at the suggestion. Donna says she is going to put round the clock guards on Eric and Stephanie won’t be allowed to visit him. Stephanie says she’s gone too far this time and she will not let Donna slander her especially when she’s probably the one who poisoned Eric. Stephanie fiercely tells Donna she will not let her get away with this and leaves.
Donna comes home and puts on some music and walks around the house, as someone watches from the patio. Donna pours herself a drink and the mystery person puts a key in the front door. Donna looks through her wedding album as the person sneaks around and turns out the lights. Donna gets scared and grabs something for protection, but then relaxes. As she goes to turn the lights back on, she is grabbed from behind!
In Eric’s office Donna tells Brooke that she talked to Owen and believes that he is innocent. Brooke is confused and Donna tells her that Owen has fallen in love with her. Brooke is skeptical but Donna defends Owen. She says the guilty person is still out there and Owen is depending on her to find him. Donna goes through Eric’s desk looking for evidence when Pam enters. Pam says, “You should be behind bars with Owen, your partner in crime.” Pam is furious Donna is walking around free when the pills were found in her drawer. The sisters wonder how she knows this and she tells them Steph told her. Donna wants Pam to help her look through Eric’s papers, but Pam thinks the attempted killer has already been caught and she should be in jail right along with him. Donna says she didn't poison Eric any more than Pam did, but Pam continues to accuse Donna of trying to kill Eric.
After Pam leaves, Donna continues to look for evidence to clear Owen, but comes up empty. Brooke questions Donna’s belief in Owen and tells her sister to be careful recalling that he took money from Felicia to break up her marriage. Donna insists Owen was sincere, but Brooke just thinks he’s a really good con man. Donna won’t hear it and thinks the real culprit is still out there and wonders who could hate Eric enough to want to see him dead. She suddenly gets an idea and says, “Oh my God! I know who did this! I know who tried to kill Eric!”
