Katie pays the babysitter from next door and tells her she’s getting more involved at work so she might be needing her more often. The babysitter says she loves her son. Katie corrects her, but says she loves Jack just like he is her own.
Nick comes in the room where Katie and Jack are and overhears Katie telling Jack sometimes she feels like his mom and wishes that she were. She thinks that she’s kind of like a mom to him and Nick makes his presence known. Nick takes Jack and Katie remarks what a great kid Jack is. Katie puts Jack down and she and Nick talk. Katie thinks Jack is really starting to bond with her and thinks maybe they should keep Jack full time until the situation with Rick is over. Nick thinks that will cause a lot of stress for Brooke and thinks Jack needs to be with his real mom. Katie notes that they can’t forget that Brooke is Jack’s biological mother, or that Nick has a baby with her sister.
Jackie comes to Nick’s house with presents for Jack and then Katie takes Jack into the kitchen. Jackie comments how precious Jack is and marvels at how well Katie is doing. Nick credits it to Jack and Jackie asks how Brooke and Ridge feel about it. She assumes Brooke is sensitive to Katie’s feelings, but that Ridge resents Nick. She is surprised Ridge allowed him to have the party at his house, but Nick says he won’t let Ridge dictate what he does with his son and says Ridge was lucky to get an invitation to the party.
Brooke comes to Nick’s house and fawns all over Jack. Katie gets up and takes Jack to get him dressed him for the party. Brooke offers to do it, but Katie won’t let her. She even tries to get Jackie to stay put, but grandma insists she help. Once alone, Nick and Brooke talk about Ridge and Bridget, but Brooke doesn’t want to have either discussion on Jack’s first birthday. Nick wants to work hard at letting the past be the past and put the mistakes they made behind them.
While Katie, Jackie, Nick and Brooke play with Jack, Katie picks up the boy and asks Nick to take a picture of the two of them as Brooke looks on concerned.
Ridge walks into the party as Jackie is taking a photo of Brooke, Nick and Jack. Ridge and Katie both look less than pleased at the family photo and Ridge asks Brooke if he can speak with her alone. After everyone else leaves the room, Ridge tells Brooke he’s upset about Nick hanging all over her and her enjoying it. Brooke says they were just celebrating Jack’s birthday and thinks he’s overreacting. Ridge retorts that he warned her about this. He’s willing to share Jack with Nick, but he won’t share her with his brother – he won’t!
In her and Nick’s room, Katie sits in bed with Jack and Nick comes in asking if she’s really up for babysitting. Katie insists she’s not babysitting, she wants Jack with her. Nick thinks Jack looks just like Brooke, but Katie disagrees. She thinks he’s all Nick, but also thinks he looks like her own baby pictures. Katie tells Nick she couldn’t have gotten through this without him and that she loves him. Nick kisses her and goes to get Jack a bottle. After Nick leaves Katie says to Jack, “I wouldn’t have been able to get through today without you either Jack. You’re my boy. You’re my precious baby.
Nick comes out and tells Brooke that Katie wants to see her and Jack. Brooke isn’t sure it’s a good idea since she just lost her baby, but Nick says it’s what she wants. Brooke goes in to see Katie, who tells Brooke that Nick wants to still be with her despite the fact that they lost their baby. Katie says they still have Jack and he will always be a part of her life. She asks to hold him and Brooke obliges. Katie tearfully holds Jack and says, “Thank God for you. My baby. My sweet boy,” as Brooke looks on concerned.
Upstairs, Nick informs Brooke that he heard from his lawyer, and they are all set to share custody of Jack! Brooke is ecstatic, and Nick tells Jack that he's a lucky guy to have such a great mom. "Our son," Brooke smiles. Although Nick worries how Ridge will handle the situation, Brooke assures him that he'll be fine then asks about Katie. "Do you think she'll be as comfortable as Ridge is," Brooke asks, to which Nick replies, "I think she's going to be fine." While playing with Jack, they talk about the wonderful thing Taylor did, for Jack's sake, then both tell their son how much they love him. "I still can't believe it…my child," Brooke says. "I really am his mommy." Smiling, Nick says, "That's how it was meant to be Brooke."
Taylor comes to Nick’s house with Jack and fills him in on Brooke’s visit to Big Bear. Jack starts to cry and Nick takes him and puts him in his playpen. Taylor demonstrates to Nick that Jack doesn’t respond to her and bemoans the fact that she should be the most important person in the world to him, but she’s not. Nick thinks they just need time, but Taylor says Jack needs to identify with the person he thinks is his mother and that’s not her. Taylor admits that she has always compared herself to Brooke in looks, personality and style. She says she’s lost to her over and over again and she’s devalued herself. Jack was just another competition she entered with Brooke and thinks that’s what she focused on instead of being a mother. Taylor wishes she could tell Nick that she was stopping this ridiculous cycle, but she can’t and it’s not fair to Jack. She says he deserves a happy childhood and it’s time for her to step aside. Nick offers to give Taylor a break for as long as she needs one, but Taylor thinks Jack needs a mother and Brooke is ready right now. Nick doesn’t think it’s a good idea because Ridge will be involved in raising Jack and they aren’t exactly on the best of terms. Taylor doesn’t think Ridge is an issue because Jack is so happy when he’s with Brooke. She wants what’s best for Jack, but concedes letting him go will be hard and she starts to cry.
