Bob Graham on Washington Journal May 18, 2009. Graham continues to raise red flags about the CIA's record keeping and whether they can be considered reliable as to when Congressional committee members were briefed. Earlier in the program Graham suggested that the CIA needed to allow members of Congress to see the documents and sign off on them with an opportunity to dissent as to the content before making them part of any official record. His suggestion certainly would put a stop to this he said/she said gamesmanship we're seeing right now.

Q: Sen. Graham I did want to follow up on an interview that you gave to Huffington Post last week. They write "In testimony that could bolster Speaker Nancy Pelosi's claim that the CIA misled her during briefings on detainee interrogations, former Senator Bob Graham insisted on Thursday that he too was kept in the dark about the use of waterboarding, and called the agency's records on these briefings 'suspect.'

In an interview with the Huffington Post, the former Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman said that approximately a month ago, the CIA provided him with false information about how many times and when he was briefed on enhanced interrogations."

What was your reasoning for asking the CIA for this information. What sort of raised red flags for you?

Graham: When this issue started to bubble up after the President released the so called torture memos, allegations were made that all of the leadership of the Intelligence Committee had been fully briefed on this. I knew that was not the case with me. So I called the CIA and asked what were the dates on which I, Bob Graham, was briefed.

They gave me four dates, two in April and two in September of 2002. I had a habit of carrying with me a spiral notebook such as this. I went back to my notebook to those dates and I found that on three of the four dates, there was no briefing held. I presented that information to the CIA and they concurred that their records were in error. That to me raised some question about their general records management process and I already indicated what I thought would be one important step that would make those records more

Did anyone see the Rachael Maddow show last night? She had on a gay member of the Air force who is being forced out of his job in the military because there have been allegations that he is gay(he admitted he is & has decided to fight). i still don't understand how a person's sexuality can be a determent to the safety of your fellow military members. Can someone explain this to me? He has been in the Air Force for 18 years and is an Lt. Colonel and if the military kicks him out he won't get his pension or whatever the military calls it(20 years). He said he was informed of the allegations against him in the spring of last year and decided to fight it by September. This man has served our military proudly until the allegations and now "they" will discard him because of who he loves. He said he found out b4 he was going to be re-deployed to Iraq, and earned several medals one of which when he helped secure the Bagdad Airport during the fall of Bagdad. He also said only 10 people on his base even knew he was gay prior to him being on Rachael's Show(those who knew were mostly investigators on base).

No, it DOESN'T look like anything is going to be done to change "THE DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL" policy because just beore the segment aired Rachael showed a spokesman from the Pentagon saying the policy will remain in place. The Lt. Colonel told how disapointed he was saying he hoped President Obama would institute changes in the policy. Stay tuned.

Unfortunately, Obama is for marriage between a man & a woman only, he believes this is a "states rights" issue and probably will stay this way as long as the slight majority still believe this way. Also he is moderate on some social issues(especially where the military is concerned). He seems to be backtracking somewhat on the issue of Gitmo & is now saying after his latest briefings that it needs to stay open longer while the issue is under advisement. He still wants to change policies of the Bush administration, but how much? On a side note, did anyone see "THE VIEW"? Glen Beck(from Fox News was on) & Babs & Whoopi BLASTED him for LYING about them, it was great. Babs asked him if he is an investigative reporter and doesn't he check his facts? Glen said he is a COMMENTATOR not an investigative reporter, it was great. He was backtracking and fumbling his words, Babs asked him what his convictions were & he couldn't/wouldn't answer her. Wonder why?

Yeah, didn't you just love it. Unfortunately the people that were "teabaggin" here in San Antonio just ate it up. Mr. "Cat Scratch Fever" man(Ted Nugent) was also here(he has a house in Fredrickburg or Kerrville close to San Antonio) and the repub's here just ate that up. Even though Texas in traditionally Republican OBAMA carried Bexar County. i told my hubbie I was going to go down there but he told me NOT to go, saying I'd probably get arrested yelling at Glen Beck.............................

During the May 20 edition of ABC's Good Morning America, in an attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) over her assertion that the CIA gave her false information about enhanced interrogation techniques in a 2002 briefing, Fox News contributor and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich misrepresented a statement by CIA director Leon Panetta, falsely claiming that Panetta said that the "CIA doesn't" lie. Gingrich stated, "I think what Panetta said Friday is very telling. It is illegal to lie to Congress, and the CIA doesn't do it." In fact, as Media Matters for America has noted, the May 15 statement from Panetta stated, "Let me be clear: It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress" [emphasis added]. As Politico's White House reporter Josh Gerstein noted in a May 18 post, "Panetta didn't reject or deny ... Pelosi's allegations that she was falsely briefed by the CIA about interrogations. Look carefully at Panetta's statement from Friday, especially the verb tense used. ... Panetta isn't opining on past acts. He's referring to the current policy. He's also not saying it never happens or happened that someone lied to or misled Congress. He's saying the agency as a whole doesn't intend to."

Did everyone hear about the man who has challenged Bush to let himself be water boarded since it is "not so bad" in Bushes own words. This man will donate $100 to charity for every second that Bush can stand to be waterboared. He also sent the same challenge out to Condy Rice and Cheyney! Pretty damn funny I think. No freaking way any of them would ever ever ever do it...

haven't lurked in the republician thread in awhile, looked in today, and it starts, now the latest is dissing sonia sotomayor, if they think she is so stupid, they should welcome her, since she won't be a threat to the brilliant conservative justices

can someone tell me exactly what this means? i have heard so many things about this quote and i need some feedback from the brilliant people who post in this thread, thank you

This month, for example, a video surfaced of Judge Sotomayor asserting in 2005 that a "court of appeals is where policy is made." She then immediately adds: "And I know--I know this is on tape, and I should never say that because we don't make law. I know. O.K. I know. I'm not promoting it. I'm not advocating it. I'm--you know."
