Drudge Report deceptively advanced accusation that Biden wrongly "credit[ed] stimulus for fire station"

mediamatters.org/items/200904030019

On April 2, the Drudge Report linked to a McClatchy Newspapers article about Vice President Joe Biden's April 1 event in Pikeville, North Carolina, with the headline: "Biden credits stimulus for fire station -- funded under Bush..." The McClatchy article was a shortened version of an article by the Raleigh News & Observer, a subsidiary of McClatchy, that quoted Republican state Sen. David Rouzer's assertion that Biden was being "disingenuous" for crediting federal stimulus money for investment in the fire house and also quoted Rouzer saying, "They're coming in and cherry picking the best projects and switching out the money, saying it's stimulus money. ... But it was already approved and in the pipeline." However, at 6:04 p.m. ET on April 2, The News & Observer updated the article to note that officials at the Department of Agriculture "disputed" Rouzer's account, providing as evidence a copy of the fire department's application for government funds, and also reported that the president of the local fire department said the department "did not officially apply for the money until March 5" -- after the stimulus bill became law on February 17. McClatchy similarly updated its version of the article. The Drudge Report, however, which had between 7:19 a.m. ET and 5:50 p.m. ET featured the headline asserting that Biden had wrongly "credit[ed] stimulus for fire station," promptly removed any reference to the McClatchy article at 6:04 p.m. ET. The Drudge Report did not subsequently link to the updated News & Observer or McClatchy articles or in any other way note the evidence undermining the claim that Biden had wrongly credited the stimulus bill with funding the fire station.

Additionally, at approximately 6:30 p.m. ET on the April 2 edition of Fox News' Special Report -- about 25 minutes after The News & Observer had updated its article -- host Bret Baier repeated Rouzer's claim that Biden was being "disingenuous" for crediting the stimulus bill for funding the fire house, without noting the Department of Agriculture's response or the local fire chief's statement.

That would be Faux News!

On Divisive Issue of Gay Clergy, Two Churches Weigh Softer Stance. Two mainline Protestant denominations, after decades of wrestling over the place of homosexuality in the church, are considering allowing local congregations to select pastors who are in long-term, monogamous, same-gender relationships. Now this is interesting.

Department of Veterans Affairs: Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) asked the Senate Veterans Affairs committee to delay voting on the “nomination of Tammy Duckworth, an injured Iraq war helicopter pilot, to be an assistant secretary at the Department of Veterans Affairs.” Contacted by ThinkProgress, Burr’s Press Secretary, David Ward said that Burr is waiting for the answers to several questions he’s put to the White House and Duckworth, but would not disclose what those questions were.

what a piece of work this guy is, she is a decorated pilot, lost both legs when she was shot down in 2004, has been working for veteran's rights since then, and he is blocking her appointment, won't say why, just is, gotta love the GOP

Media falsely claim Frank did not answer question asking if he bore any responsibility for financial crisis
mediamatters.org/items/200904080013

During the April 8 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, host Joe Scarborough falsely claimed, repeatedly, that Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) would not give an answer to a student's question: "[H]ow much, if any, responsibility do you think you have" for the financial crisis? Similarly, on the April 8 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends, co-host Steve Doocy falsely claimed Frank "never answered" the student's question, and on the April 7 edition of his Fox News television program, Sean Hannity asserted that Frank "had a little trouble answering a very simple question last night." Contrary to their claims, Frank did provide a substantive response, which none of them mentioned or aired.

Scarborough, Doocy, and Hannity all played clips of the exchange between Frank and a student at an event at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. But none of them noted that Frank said, "The answer is, yes, I do take responsibility for something," or that he later added that after filing "a bill in 2006 when I was still in the minority to say that hedge funds should be registered," in 2007, he "was approached by people who said, 'No. No. You can't do too much regulation,' and I backed off. I wish I hadn't." Frank also noted that he did, in fact, work on legislation to deal with mortgage lending, stating that in 2007 his committee passed restrictions on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and on subprime lending.

Morris falsely claimed Frank "killed" Bush's "proposed measures to rein in Fannie Mae"
mediamatters.org/items/200904090004

During the April 8 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, contributor Dick Morris falsely claimed that "in the 2000s, when Bush proposed measures to rein in Fannie Mae, [Rep.] Barney Frank [D-MA] killed them." In fact, for much of the 2000s, Frank had no power to "kill[]" measures -- Republicans controlled the House and could have passed legislation regarding Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the House without any Democratic support. Yet during President Bush's tenure, Congress did not pass oversight legislation for Fannie and Freddie until after Democrats gained a majority in both houses of Congress in 2007. Moreover, Frank supported efforts to enhance regulatory oversight on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in 2005 and passed regulatory oversight reform after becoming chairman of the House Financial Services Committee in 2007.

Previously, O'Reilly Factor host Bill O'Reilly similarly falsely claimed that "the Democrats in charge of the finance committees" resisted efforts by the Bush administration to regulate the mortgage industry and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in particular.

As Media Matters for America has repeatedly noted, in early 2007, as the new chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Frank sponsored H.R. 1427, a bill to create the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), granting that agency "general supervisory and regulatory authority over" Fannie and Freddie and directing it to reform the companies' business practices and regulate their exposure to credit and market risk. The FHFA was eventually created after Congress incorporated provisions that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said were "similar" to those of H.R. 1427 into the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, which Bush signed into law on July 30, 2008.

Furthermore, before taking over the House Financial Services Committee chairmanship, Frank worked with committee chairman Rep. Michael Oxley (R-OH) on the Federal Housing Finance Reform Act of 2005, which would have established the FHFA to replace the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) as overseer of the activities of Fannie and Freddie. After voting for the bill in committee, Frank voted against final passage of the bill on the House floor, stating that he was doing so because an amendment added to the bill on the House floor imposed restrictions on the kinds of nonprofit organizations that could receive funding under the bill.

I really don't think he will have any competition in the next election. The Republicans have nothing new to offer, just the same old pointless rhetoric that they have been pushing since 1955!! Conservatism is dead..let's all tramp the dirt down!!!!

Faux news has finally exposed themselves as being anything BUT Fair and Balanced!!

Fox News takes ownership of tea parties, and, therefore, their extremist rhetoric
mediamatters.org/items/200904130004

In light of the extremist rhetoric in evidence at previous tea party protests, by aggressively promoting what it has labeled "FNC Tax Day Tea Parties," Fox News is also associating itself in advance with whatever violent, offensive, or otherwise extremist rhetoric emanates at those upcoming events.

Several Fox News hosts will be broadcasting their shows from the protests and have encouraged viewers to attend them. For example, Glenn Beck has implored his viewers: "If you can't make the one in San Antonio, please go to the one with Neil [Cavuto] or with Sean [Hannity] in Atlanta, that's supposed to be great, Greta [Van Susteren] is in Washington, D.C. Just get out and let your face be seen." In addition, Fox News' new website, TheFoxNation.com, has featured several items on the protests, including from Fox News contributors promoting the events. Fox News has repeatedly provided organizing information for the protests and featured interviews with protest organizers.

In its promotion of the forthcoming protests, Fox News repeatedly aired footage from previous tea party protests that include protesters with signs suggesting President Obama and the Democrats are socialists, communists, fascists, and thieves.

i think some of you may see the irony of this, you know how many republicians call themselves Christians?? they really don't want to share or help the less fortunate, IMO, well i decided to look some stuff up about this in the Bible, here goes

Proverbs 22:16
He who oppresses the poor to make more for himself or who gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.

interesting, don't you think

Now isn't that just the darnest thing you ever heard? Guess that page is missing from the Rep version of the bible. They are the ones who yell about pro life but by God you had better not ask them to allow one red cent of their money help in the needs of that child after it is born. It is as if their motto is get them born and then to hell with them.
