Quote grits1976: My daughter seems to be OK this morning but who knows, she and Nate had bought twinkie a new collar for Christmas. I guess we'll save it for now. I think I want a Lab next time I like larger dogs, but I did love the twink. Be sure and check the life expextancy of the breed you get. Bigger dogs have lower ones and that makes it hard. My niece works for my vet and they just put down a great dane at 7. I thought that was so young but that is the expectancy for them. I think the bigger the dog the shorter their life span. Something to do with their hearts wearing out sooner. I know a dogs heart beats twice as fast as a persons. |

My last 2 made it only to 9. I wish they were like birds and lived 80 some years. |

She sleeps alot...I know her time is coming but the thought of it chokes me up. We had a scary incident with my dog, he had to be rushed into the vet, he has a hernia and his intestines had pushed through the opening....he was in a tremendous amount of pain. But luckily we had rushed him in soon enough...in the middle of the night...and he was Ok. Some of my extended family were rolling their eyes after we said we had to rush the dog in, but I really don't care. That makes me so mad when people call them just dogs. Those folks just don't know how much love they are missing out on. |

This is very true -life expectancy for larger dogs is much shorter than the smaller breeds-Lab are about the sweetest little guys you will ever find- they don't grow out of their puppy stage till about 4 and those can be harrowing years, with all the puppy stuff going on inside a full grown dog-but they are so worth it-- the problem with the larger dogs too, for us anyway is if they become unable to walk due to some illness or disease- they are really heavy to pick up to transport to the vet-at least for we older folks they are-- |

I stay away from people with that attitude-- family or not -them is fighting words to me----how does the saying go: The more I get to know people better I like my dog..something like that-- |

Quote grits1976: My daughter's dog died today... she had liver damage and lost a lot if weight very rapidly. The only thing that I can think of is her heart worm meds got changed about the time she started to loose weight. But we didn't think much of it at the time b/c we went to a different brand of dog food at the same time that she nor my mom's dog ate real well, but Twinkie was obese, so we were glad she lost some weight. We went back to the brand they were eating and she still was loosing weight. So I think it was the meds, vet doesn't agree. I had to tell her after school today... It sucked. I don't believe we need to immediately replace her I think we need to grieve a bit... My MIL doesn't agree and she breeds dogs I hope they don't give my kids a puppy for Christmas as ours was a little daschund and she raises bulldogs our fence needs to be fixed before we get anymore animals a tree fell on it during a storm, especially a large dog like that. Very sorry for your loss. Please don't let anyone give a dog to you as a "gift". You are correct in thinking that one dog can be replaced with another. Grieving process is normal. The kids will let you know when they are ready. I have the animal rescue site link as my signature on my emails. I've been going to that site for quite a while, its wonderful. I've been where you are quite a few times, I've had pets that were 20 years old, and 17 years old. It's very rough. |

Us pet parents all know the feelings don't we? How is she doing this morning? She seems ok today just real lazy. I have to drag her out of the bed and make her go out. I stay with her till she pees and then she runs back to the bed. She still won't eat anything but the half slice of bread I put her thyroid med in. Having a heck of a time getting thos big Batril down her. The vet called to check on her again. He told me to come by and pick up "Hill's Prescription Diet" canned food. One is I/D and the other is W/D. He said that most dogs will eat that when they won't eat anything else and he wants her to eat. Well she loved it. She is gonna be too spoiled to ever eat dry food after this I am afraid. Still got to take the temp again when I can get husband to hold her. I did this morning and it was 102.5. If it gets any higher than that I am calling him. Thanks for asking. |

Ask your vet if he has 'pill pockets'-they are the greatest thing-- soft beef flavored little pockets that you put the pill in and close up- the kids love them-- I never have any trouble getting my two to take any kind of pill when I use them- its ok if she is spoiled they- they deserve it- the wet food is so much better for her than kibbles-How is she today? |

She is just laying here on the bed being lazy. She throws up water everytime she drinks. She drinks a whole belly full and then within 5 minutes out some of it comes. She let go a mouthfull on the bed a little while ago. I am hoping this is just side effects of the meds. Maybe making her real thirtsy and she is over doing on the intake. She seems fine just REAL lazy and wanting to sleep. |

You can check by kinda holding the skin on her tummy and letting it go- if it pops right back into place she is hydrated-if not she is probably getting dehydrated--- |
