OT: I need some advice

I have a friend who wants to go back to night school&get her high school diploma. But, she&husband don't have that kind of money for her to do so. She wanted to do the kind of program where you could study from home. But, the cost for that is $395.00 plus a $26.00 fee(for something else, I don't remember what that is). She don't have anything wrong with her, but her doctor recommended that she go to Vocational Rehabilitation(they are supposed to help you get a job;I went(I've been twice&they haven't help at all either). They haven't really helped either of us. She wants to try&find somewhere that will pay for her to go back to school. But, she don't know where to look that will give free help(I mean the kind of programs that don't ask for a credit card to help you). Can anyone tell me how to help her find some help? Thanks in advance.

Why don't you post this message in the Chit Chat thread. The folks there are nice and you can talk about anything there.

Try Chancellor Industries or the John Abbot Foundation, they periodically help people.

You might have better luck posting this question in the Lounge. Don't be surprised if this topic gets closed because it is off topic.

Sorry, I didn't know that it cost money to get your GED. Can't you just take the test or study on line?

But, I would create this topic in the lounge....there are alot more people there too to give you some help.

This definitely would be better in the lounge, but since it's here, we'll leave it for now. I'd go to Google and type in FREE GED. Nobody should have to pay for it. There are tons of online courses you can do for free.

Good luck to your friend. It's admirable that she wants to do this, but if she's over 25, tell her that there really is no need for her to go back to get this. It's worth nothing. Instead, she can go to college or university (at least you can in Canada) as a mature student and get a diploma or degree. Sure, she'd have to pay for it but she can get a loan for it, then once she's working in the field of her choice, she will be ok to pay it back. She can even take night courses. It takes a while but is worth it. A friend of mine is an accountant now, making great money, while she went to night school for a few years to get a degree.

Anyway.. sorry for tmi. I just think it's great she wants to go back!! Education is important!!

G.E.D. classes should be free. i know they are here in missouri, maybe she should call her dept. of social services and they might know how to help her. i got my G.E.D.!!! I HAD TO PAY FOR MY BOOK THAT WAS ALL! she can always try ebay to see what a book is there. congrats on your friend, glad she is trying to better herself by getting the knowledge she needs to conquer the job market. i wish her all the luck in the world!

Contact your local high school and ask them for the number of their continuation school most of them will have adult education and they offer the the GED class if not go on Craigslist and put an add in the wanted section and ask for a GED book for free and I bet you get a few responses. Then study the book and take the pre test then you can take the test at your local high school. I hope that helps
