In Japan they now have a legal limit on waistlines, everyone between the ages of 40-74 must be measured each year and could be imposed penalties if they dont meet these guidelines. Men 33.5 Women 35.4.

Yes Obesity is an issue but isn't government stepping over a boundry with this???????? Can you imagine if the USA imposed this???????

they better not... Some things are really to the extreme... Some people truly have a problem with weight... and lots of women put on a litle extra during pregnancy and it kind of sticks around... i think that is an invasion of privacy... they are trying to make overweight people pay extra for taking up space on planes... like they may have to use more than one seat.... i can kind of see the point, but that seems a little extrem too... just they want that money, and dont consider peoples feelings... everyone cant be a size 0 to 4.. that is small to me...

I was just reading in a magazine this week that a waist over 35 can bring on heart problems. That apple shape they always talk about. I think obesity is a big issue here in the US but I sure hope our government doesn't start lining us up for measurements.

Wow. I get that they're probably trying to do good but I just can't say that's right.

Wow yes i would say this is going to the extreme.

But I will say this, I watched a program showing how this generation of kids will have a much shorter life expectancies then their parents do to the extreme obesity among young kids and teen.

I agree that parent's need to keep there children active and try to incorporate a healthly range of foods & that Society has gotten alittle out of control but how far do we want government to beable to control things? Asian men are smaller built but a 33.5 inch waist seems extreme. My husband wears a 34" waist pant and by no means is he the least bit chubby.

That idea is just silly. Sometimes the weight gain is out of a person's control: pregnancy, health related illnesses, some medications (especially psychiatric medications) cause weight gain.

Imposing penalties on people for not following crazy guidelines isn't going to work. People will learn to adapt to whatever penalties are placed against them. Instead of focusing on fairly impossible waist line measurements people should be more concerned about maintaining a healthy weight, taking into consideration a person's body shape, height, health history, etc.

Drastic times call for drastic measures. But something like measuring everyone's waistline would never happen here in the States. Most men don't even go to doctors. I mean logisticly, I can't see how something like that would work. It's hard enough to even get a census report on how many people there are in this country, let alone a measurement of their waist. It all gets back to probably the biggest problem for most Americans that actually even contributes to the obesity problem more than anything else and that is People Don't Have Time, they don't have time to exercise, watch what they eat or take care of themselves, sad as it may be.
