I don't know about you, but the one movie that scared me the worst in my whole life was The Exorcist, part one.

For me, the most motifying movie was Silence of the Lambs or Fargo...not because they were THAT scary, but just horrifying.

As a young child, I saw a movie called "TINGLER" and was terrified! I had the chance to see it again recently, it was really chessy and dated! It's all perception!

I'll agree with Silence of the Lambs as one that really freaked me out.

Also the opening scene in Jaws, where the girl is swimming and the shark gets her. Terrified me for years

Arachnophobia, The Hills Have Eyes-The first one, The Silence of the Lambs, Alien, The Thing-1982. Now, I'm too old to watch movies like those anymore.

"The Haunting" (1963), based on the novel "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson.

To me, how a person's psyche interprets what is real and what is not real is always more scary and provocative than the in-your-face horror. What did I see, feel, perceive? Is it a ghost or is it not? Is it in my mind or is it real? When and will I know the difference? Gentle prodding in the night...and, in the case of this film, hand-holding...

Also like "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" movies...no, not the Johnny Depp one (way too over the top, i.e., in-your-face), but as an example, the one with Jeff Goldblum, Meg Foster, and Dick Butkus was campy, scary enough and, IMO, a very good interpretation of Washington Irving's vision of what is actual haunting and what is in the mind.

Dcorn, I am in your camp, having had the site of a huge cemetery from yon bedroom window when I was growing up. My head was always under the covers on Halloween night because I was also not so far from Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. I prefer the friendly historic ghosts, and not so much the unearthly murderous ghouls that are now depicted in horror films!!!!

JMO...I appreciate hearing y'all's opinions!!!

our yard ran right into the graveyard. it is only 200 yards away from the house . the house used to be an old school house built in the 1800's. it was very common back then to have the cementary by a school house and church

ITA...when I was about 5 years old, they were showing The Exorcist on tv...I heard my mom talking about it, she wanted to see it, well after hearing her talk about wanting to see it, of course I did also, but she said no...I was too young. Well we had a pool table in our basement at the time, and while The Exorcist was on...everyone was in the basement shooting pool...I snuck upstairs to sit and watch the movie...well there was this one part, all the girl in the movie did was start talking in a demonic voice...I freaked out, and started screaming...everyone came running up from the basement....from that day on, I refused to watch The Exorcist...I'm 30 now, and still won't watch it!
I also think "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" was pretty scary...I get totally freaked out when it comes to people being posessed or the idea of something coming out of the mirror...couldn't watch Candyman either....

Descent was pretty scary. I like scary films but more the psychological scaries than gore.
While reading The Exorcist my 2 month old baby started crying and I was too scared to go back the hall to get him. I felt he had become possessed! (Yes, I did eventually go and get him!)
Silence of the Lambs book and movie were both creepy.
This weekend I watched "Night of the Living Dead" made in 1965 at a small farmhouse in the county I grew up in. It's pretty scary too, even now. And it happened right down the road from me. Used to freak me out!
