Senate bill to include public option

Health care legislation headed for the Senate floor will include an option for government-run insurance coverage, Democratic officials said Monday, with final details yet to be settled.

These officials said Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., intended to make a formal announcement later in the day, and also say he had nearly completed work on the legislation for the full Senate to debate early next month.

Question: What type of public option?

Yes, that is what I read as well.

I don't know if this will go over with the majority of Dems on the floor, though.

As we know, some states in this country are too entrenched in lobbyists and special interest groups that they could care less about the needs of its citizens.

South Carolina for example--has some abominable healthcare stats, but the state continuous to push back on federal aid.

Hmmmm...this will be interesting to see how this all pans out.

Any public option is a bad idea and against the will of the majority of the American people. This Democratically controlled congress will have a high political price to pay come 2010 if they try to shove this down our throats.

Really? 61% of Dems approve of a state opt out plan? I thought they wanted the basic public option plan that applies federally to all states, just like Medicare/Medicaid/Social Security?

Actually my friend, the Rasmussen Poll says that 49% say that no reform is better than the current proposal.

51% oppose and 45% approve

61% say reform is needed, just not the current proposal (me included)

66% say they would prefer increased free-market competion over a government run option

Sorry my friend, those are the numbers. Its not just the Rasmussen poll that says this but a plurality of polling shows similar numbers.

guess i was mistaken...

In a new poll done by CBS and the NY Times shows that not only do Americans want a public option, they want it BIG TIME. These are numbers that the White House and Rahm can't ignore anymore.
65% of Americas do favor a government administered health care plan like Medicare that would compete with private insurance companies. That's something the Baucus Dogs and Republicans do not want to see after the mark ups have just completed. I'm sure they thought the teabaggers spoke for America, but as any informed person would know, they do not.

Ok--I thought that was the percentage I saw this past weekend...WHEW! We know how things change so quickly when it comes to this stuff...that's why I mentioned my shock that a state opt out would be favored--which I don't think it would. Hmmm..Harry Reid needs to make some water to wine quickly or he's screwed, especially in his home state of Nevada--they want him to present the solely govt option and some people are seeing him as weak right now.

He does look like an overstressed bookkeeper, hunh?

But voters also want a plan that gives them a choice not only of private health insurance plans - but a public health insurance plan as well. In fact a new poll by Lake Research found that a whopping 73% of voters want everyone to have a choice of private health insurance or a public health insurance plan while only 15% want everyone to have private insurance.
