We already have Government sponsored health care with Meidcaid and Medicare. What we need in this country is affordable health insurance for all, with no one being rejected because they do not meet guidelines. The insurance industry is not providing this as they are in business to make a profit. That is why we look to the Government to force insurance companies to behave responsibly, or risk the Govt. taking over. Someone HAS to bring these people into line. They are spending hundreds of millions of dollars opposing health care reform as they only want to insure the healthy. Health care is a necessity not a for profit business.

Not only do the insurance companies get to tell you when and if they will cover anything BUT they also tell you what doctors you can see. The company I use to work for had BC&BS of GA because the main office was in GA. BCBS as well as every other private insurance make deals with doctors and hospitals with whom they will make the most profit. They would not make any deals with the doctors in NC so if you wanted your insurance to pay anything you had to go to GA and use the doctors they told you to. These doctors where hours and miles away and you had no clue about their competency. If your insurance company does not have a contract with your private insurance then you are no better off than anyone without insurance. BCBS gives out a handbook of the doctors you are allowed to use and be covered with. You don't use those doctors they don't pay. Once I went to a doctor that WAS listed in my handbook as accepting my insurance. Well guess what, when the bill came my claim was denied. When I called BCBS they said they would not pay because the doctor I saw was not one that they would pay for as he was not in their network. I told them that I was looking at his name right there in my handbook of acceptable doctors as we spoke. I was told that this doctor was no longer approved and they would NOT pay. The exact words I got were, "that handbook is only as good as the time it is printed, doctors can drop out or be dropped out at any time". How are people suppose to get to and frome these other states to find a doctor? This can be hundreds of miles to travel. This takes hours and hours. How can they get off work enough time to drive hours away reularly? How many bosses will let you off entire days for doctor appointments on a regular basis when you should be able to use one in your on town and miss only a couple hours of work. This is not to even mention the pay that a person would lose having to take off days at a time to travel to a doctor that your insurance says is ok to use. How is that fair? Employees of the USPS even have to drive to find doctors to take the USPS insurance. All of the employees have to travel miles and miles and into other states to get their insurance to pay. One of the mail delivery guys had to drive 2 hours into another state just yesterday just to see a dentist. That was the closest one around that would even accept USPS insurance. Now that is sad. Insurance companies should let you choose your doctor not choose it for you. Isn't this exactly what people are claiming the government will do??????????? Surprise, it is already being done. Now tell me why anyone should have to drive hundreds of miles into other states and see a doctor they don't even know just to be able to get their provider to pay? I worked in the medical field for 7 years and I was the one to work with the insurance companies trying to get them to pay. I have seen hundreds and hundreds who found out too late that their insurance company did not approve our doctors for treatment simply because we would not take a huge loss for them to make more profit. I have also seen many many insurance companies be dropped from being accepted by doctors and hospitals because of the VERY SMALL amout they pay. A person should be allowed to see the physician of their choice not the choice of their insurance company. And that is exactly the way it is now. They pay what they want when they want because they have NO rules or regulations to keep them from doing as they please. How anyone could approve of that situation is beyond me.

You are right about Medicare and Medicaid being government run, I have been on Medicare for just under two years. This is the first time since 1975 that we will not receive a cost of living allowance
in Jan 2010...but our Medicare charge will go up from what I understand, about $15.00 each month. Now that is the governments typical way of doing things isn't it? So if they plan on running the other health coverage the same way they are running Social Security and Medicare...no thank you.

I am one of the more fortunate ones that do not have to work part time or pinch every penny, many on ss do and it makes my heart hurt for them. I pray that the leaders of this fine country can find a solution that works for everyone..

One poster was telling horror stories about BCBS and I fully understand that it happens, I have been with them for almost 30 years and thru several surgeries, have not had a problem with them. That was not the case when my late husband was fighting cancer but that was another insurance company. They have no regulations and can do as they please....that is one thing that surely needs to be stopped. We all want the same thing in the long run, so let's all pull together and maybe it will happen soon..

Excellent post, Wanna! I had no idea about the USPS workers hassles with their health insurance coverage and finding network approved docs within a reasonable distance. That is absolutely shameful!

Yes...health care should be a necessity, and it the words of the late Sen. Kennedy, it's a "moral issue" as well. How anyone blessed enough to afford quality healthcare and only think about themselves is a shame. And then you have the ignorant out here protesting to 'keep our country's healthcare.' And these same people are suffering like other people in this country, yet they choose to protect the insurance companies that are giving everyone and them the shaft? Just makes no sense...I'm glad though that momentum is going towards reform w/a public option...soon.

81% is definately new to me. I've seen anywhere from 30-something to 57%, tho. But I would never advise going by polls. They are even more biased and fixed than the politicians!

A vote seems fair, since this is somehting that does not affect the politicians, so why should we have to trust them to do the right thing for us?
