Quote Creedfan: Quote lovesit: Quote Creedfan: Wow. I'm amazed to see this most controversial conversation still going. I would think most would think it's offensive..Many activists and latino rights groups are offended. It's been pulled from the shelves of target. I would think that many know that these days most illegial immigrants are indeed latino or mexican. I don't see dressing up as a hooker or inmate as the same thing b/c that is dressing up as a random person who broke the law. It's not hinting at a specific race of people. The illegal alien costume implies much more. It sends a message of hate to adults and kids that there is an assumption that most mexicans or latinos you run into may not be here legally. Regardless of the size of the costume..don't you think kids will see this and possibly treat anyone mexican and latino differently as a result? Is that the message we would want to send to our kids? Kids are impressionable and easily swayed. As adults we should take care to ensure we are not humiliating any race in any way or insinuating something about a race. If you want to be angry, blame our laws..not the people that make it over here easily. Quite frankly I only feel compassion for those seeking to leave an impoverished country in hopes of a better life. Btw I think Ceaser of the Dog Whisperer is such an amazing example of someone who has worked hard and "achieved". I wish more actual citizens had as much drive. Anyway I see this as the same mentality as wearing a muslim costume strapped with bombs. It sends a message of hate. That is my opinion. Well first, thanks for telling my the difference for you between inmates/illegals/etc. I don't agree, but now I can understand. Second, never did I even say my stance on illegals. Since this thread took the political turn, here goes. As it happens, I don't blame them one bit. It is our own fault for not holding our gov accountable for letting these illegals undermine our economy and healthcare system. But none of that comes to my mind when I look at this costume, and that doesn't make me a low, racist, or hateful person. Never watched the Dog Whisperer through a whole episode, so I don't get that reference. Also, I don't have kids, but here is my take on what the kids would interpret (I am from a family of over 50 kids under high school, so I feel I have a semi-educated guess) They would feel the costume was making fun of illegals, not Mexicans, not Brazilians, not Ecuadoreans, edpecially if the parents were doing a decent job at explaining what illegals really meant. But I know I could be wrong, I just know if it were my kids I would have already explained to them that "illegal" has no racial/ethnic boundary. Serious question: why does it say "think Mexican" when we see the mustache? I have yet to see the majority of male Latinos with one? And I know I never would have thought Mexican if it had not told me to think that. I would have thought "illegal male aliens." Whoa. I think something got off track here. I try to word things carefully but I guess you can't always please everyone. Anyway my post was about the topic in general and I had addressed a few things from a few different posts. So this was not directed at you even if I may have touched on something you said. When I mentioned Ceasar/Dog Whisperer, that had to do with someone else's post who brought him up. So let's just say that my "opinion" was in regards to the topic itself as well as things many had said. Anyway I'm not trying to tell anyone about the difference of anything. Simply put, it's my viewpoint regardless of who agrees or not. I'm sorry if I was so obviously offensive somehow to have received such a strongly worded post in return directed right at me. As for kids, I do have them. I know how easily hate is spread even if you talk to your children all day long about ignorance. I can account for mine knowing the difference but I'm sorry..I can't account for the millions of others that will see the stereotype and use it in hate. Not to mention the parents that already do and will pass it down to their children. I find that really sad. Halloween is for fun..not to make fun of a group of people. Here's a serious question for you - If it's not stereotyped toward anyone then why are there protests from latino groups and groups for immigration? Wouldn't THEY be the highest authority of what is found offensive toward their own people? How about this..why don't you wear the costume and walk in front of a place with a strong mexican draw or the mexican mafia perhaps? If it would freak you out to do that or even imagine doing that, then you know it's wrong in your heart. Do you think muslim costumes with bombs strapped to them would be acceptable? It's the same mentality. Personally I feel if it hurts a group of people or sends a message hinting toward a group of people in a negative way, it's just not right. Again, my apologies for somehow offending you with my post. I was only posting an opinion that was completely on topic to this thread. Maybe there is so much anger b/c you know in your heart this costume is wrong and any of the arguments justifying it do not hold water. I can't think of any other reason to be upset over my post. No no! I didn't mean for my post to come off as strong or argumentative! Sorry! I don't have time to reply anymore right now, just wanted to apologize for it coming off like that to you. I never meant to be strong or anything. Peace out! |

Quote cats meow: quote sundevil....Why does everything have to go back to being political? Differences of opinion don't always apply to right and left. If you knew anytning about me you'd know I'm not a far right person, so to imply my questions have anything to do with my political views is a bit of a stretch. I don't intend disrespect Cats, but the comments that any time a person disagrees with the majority on this board, we are labeled as right wingers.... Perhaps you should look inward when you say that you automatically associate mustaches with Mexicans because that implys stereotyping to me. actually i already know you are not on the far right, as a matter of fact a few posters on the right have found this costume distasteful, and actually, i find it racist and as far as the mustaches as stereotyping, if the costume did not have a mustache, it would resemble an alien from outer space, if you saw an afro on a costume woluldn't you think it might be an african american? if you saw a milkmaid with long blond braids, wouldn't you think swedish? anyway, the bottom line for me is i think this is a very insulting halloween costume, i don't think it is remotely funny and i certainly hope the posters that know me don't think i stereotype OT, i finally watched house for the first time, i enjoyed it I don't seriously think you stereotype Cats, I was making more of a point because I honestly did not see the costume with a mustache and thus I only saw the alien face and immediately thought of an alien from outer space and thought it was a play on words. I showed my husband the costume to see if he has an opinion and he just shrugged - he's Spanish/Italian and has a mustache!!! BTW, glad you enjoyed House...he used to be much more bitter in previous seasons, but I still enjoy the show. |

Quote OspreyGirl: Quote puddycat: Okey Dokey - - Many posts have said they "would" go dressed up in the Illegal Alien costume and the Aunt Jemima costume, but none said they were going to do so. Do us a favor, okay? If you DO dress up in either of the above, let us know how you fare. But - - make sure that if you wear the Aunt Jemima costume, you go to an African American household and if you wear the illegal alien costume, with the mustache and green card, that you go to a Mexican or another Hispanic household. Let us know how the parents who open the doors react! I am sure you will still get candy - - and if you WOULD send your kids out dressed like either of the above, I certainly hope you will be accompanying them. HAPPY HALLOWEEN! You know what Puddy? I would request that if those actions are done at the homes of a Latino and AA that pictures be posted, with a slideshow of arrival reactions, reactions from the people opening the door, etc. Heck, I think a video would be great, shows everything in real time. unedited, with no trickery in discerning what's happening. You know...it's easier for someone to type that they actually have the b@lls do be that racist at the door of the persons whom they hate. It's real easy to hide in the comfort of one's home, office, library, etc, and type that they would actually show up and wear such offensive things like these costumes...doing so isn't a funny thing to do...it's a stupid thing to do that will might get you hurt or killed. Yes, that would be something if that actually would happen. Just like the Klan hiding behind sheets, most racists are cowards and would rather hide than be that bold to show up on the doorstep of a Latino family wearing that distasteful costume. And God pity the ones who would think they would walk away from a situation like that unscathed...all of these things are tasteless, and people need to stop dancing around the issue. It's not really a political thing, it's a matter of decency and respect for others of different cultural backgrounds who are sensitive to racist behaviors and imagery. Quick note: I find it funny that the moment something offensive happens to women, especially on a national level, that probably 99.9% of us on this board would rally together...I find it sad, however, that when it comes to things like this illegal alien costume, racism trumps equality of any kind. This is a really down to earth post - - as always from you - - and you are right when you say "It's not really a political thing, it's a matter of decency and respect for others of different cultural backgrounds who are sensitive to racist behaviors and imagery." That is what is all about - - respecting each other as human beings - - and nothing else but that. And, I keep repeating myself - - but the whole idea of this thread was about how people felt about this costume - - that is all. But, I guess if Target apologized and took it off the market - - that doesn't say anything - - right? |
