But, I agree with Cats - - doesn't matter - - I still think it was totally inappropriate - - and keep reminding people that if it was so funny, etc., then why did Target apologize and take it off their market? |

Every year I give out candy to inmates (some dead), Michael Jackson, Slash, hookers...I guess I don't understand why one of an illegal alien is offensive when an inmate/hooker is not. Because race is implied when the mustache is on? All chose to break the law. |

Because race is implied when the mustache is on? All chose to break the law. Wanted to add, someone said earlier that not all illegals were bad people. I just want to say, that living in a sanctuary city, MOST are NOT bad people. But I still like the costume, and it has nothing to do with race or my non-racism. Also, still did not find the article where it said it was also in kids' sizes. Anyone? If you really are interested - - it is one size fits all. You can read all about the "darling" little costume and see the picture, etc. on the following link: www.bittenandbound.com/2009/10/17/illegal-alien-halloween-costume-controversy-ph... /> Edit: There is also a video on the above link and you can CLEARLY SEE THE BIG BLACK MUSTACHE! That's all for me on here. I voiced my opinion and I am sticking to it. You all have a HAPPY HALLOWEEN! |

Wow. I'm amazed to see this most controversial conversation still going. I would think most would think it's offensive..Many activists and latino rights groups are offended. It's been pulled from the shelves of target. I would think that many know that these days most illegial immigrants are indeed latino or mexican. I don't see dressing up as a hooker or inmate as the same thing b/c that is dressing up as a random person who broke the law. It's not hinting at a specific race of people. The illegal alien costume implies much more. It sends a message of hate to adults and kids that there is an assumption that most mexicans or latinos you run into may not be here legally. Regardless of the size of the costume..don't you think kids will see this and possibly treat anyone mexican and latino differently as a result? Is that the message we would want to send to our kids? Kids are impressionable and easily swayed. As adults we should take care to ensure we are not humiliating any race in any way or insinuating something about a race. If you want to be angry, blame our laws..not the people that make it over here easily. Quite frankly I only feel compassion for those seeking to leave an impoverished country in hopes of a better life. Btw I think Ceaser of the Dog Whisperer is such an amazing example of someone who has worked hard and "achieved". I wish more actual citizens had as much drive. Anyway I see this as the same mentality as wearing a muslim costume strapped with bombs. It sends a message of hate. That is my opinion. |

Anyway I see this as the same mentality as wearing a muslim costume strapped with bombs. It sends a message of hate. That is my opinion. Well first, thanks for telling my the difference for you between inmates/illegals/etc. I don't agree, but now I can understand. Second, never did I even say my stance on illegals. Since this thread took the political turn, here goes. As it happens, I don't blame them one bit. It is our own fault for not holding our gov accountable for letting these illegals undermine our economy and healthcare system. But none of that comes to my mind when I look at this costume, and that doesn't make me a low, racist, or hateful person. Never watched the Dog Whisperer through a whole episode, so I don't get that reference. Also, I don't have kids, but here is my take on what the kids would interpret (I am from a family of over 50 kids under high school, so I feel I have a semi-educated guess) They would feel the costume was making fun of illegals, not Mexicans, not Brazilians, not Ecuadoreans, edpecially if the parents were doing a decent job at explaining what illegals really meant. But I know I could be wrong, I just know if it were my kids I would have already explained to them that "illegal" has no racial/ethnic boundary. Serious question: why does it say "think Mexican" when we see the mustache? I have yet to see the majority of male Latinos with one? And I know I never would have thought Mexican if it had not told me to think that. I would have thought "illegal male aliens." |

Quote cats meow: quote sundevil....Why does everything have to go back to being political? Differences of opinion don't always apply to right and left. If you knew anytning about me you'd know I'm not a far right person, so to imply my questions have anything to do with my political views is a bit of a stretch. I don't intend disrespect Cats, but the comments that any time a person disagrees with the majority on this board, we are labeled as right wingers.... Perhaps you should look inward when you say that you automatically associate mustaches with Mexicans because that implys stereotyping to me. actually i already know you are not on the far right, as a matter of fact a few posters on the right have found this costume distasteful, and actually, i find it racist and as far as the mustaches as stereotyping, if the costume did not have a mustache, it would resemble an alien from outer space, if you saw an afro on a costume woluldn't you think it might be an african american? if you saw a milkmaid with long blond braids, wouldn't you think swedish? anyway, the bottom line for me is i think this is a very insulting halloween costume, i don't think it is remotely funny and i certainly hope the posters that know me don't think i stereotype OT, i finally watched house for the first time, i enjoyed it Sorry, but most people would certainly think that you are stereotyping............I work with 9 men, the 5 mexican men do NOT have mustaches....3 white men do!! Also my supervisor says she has the start of a good mustache but that might not count!! I am sure you meant no harm but you should think about what you are saying if you do not want it to be said that you are stereotyping. I have many mexican friends and they are all free of facial hair.....maybe what you are thinking about are some of the old cartoons or movies that portrayed most mexican men with very large mustaches... My only problem with all of this is...........way bigger problems in this world today than to worry about this. It is not a big problem unless a few people make it a big problem, and it appears that is what has happened here. I have given out candy to every kind of costume over many years, and never one time was I offended, seems to me like you are losing the idea behind Halloween if you are going to pick everyones costume apart!! I normally do not post because I feel bad when I get fussed at, but felt this deserved my input, right or wrong!! |

Sorry, but I have to say that I have known cats meow for a long time and she never sets out to offend or sterotype. This thread started off with comments about the costume and everyone gave their opinion, as they have a right to do. I personally saw it online and yes, as you said above, maybe what you are thinking about are some of the old cartoons or movies that portrayed most mexican men with very large mustaches If you look at the costume picture with the mustache - - that is exactly what it set out to look like, IMHO, and I do not think that I am the only one that would think that. It certainly was not given the mustache to look like Groucho Marx! |

That is a stupid way to teach a child right from wrong..here's a thought, how about telling them about the illegal immigrants and giving them the right info? Not have them parade around the streets on a fun night to poke fun at people. I think it is in poor taste myself. I think this lowers oneself if a person thinks this sort of thing is ok. Just my opinion. It's making fun of people that are less fortunate - a group of people and a race in particular. Not just one person. I am not saying I don't think our borders should be tightened down alot more....Nothing to do with that. However making fun of people for being desperate to escape poverty in hopes of a better future just seems so wrong to me. Sad actually. I am glad I am person that could never condone such a thing. What is next? Muslim costumes with fake bombs stapped to them? It truly is the same mentality. It sends out a message of hate to a particular group of people. ITA, with both you and Tammer, great posts! Would like to add it also racially profiled Mexicans and Latinos as illegals. Many Mexicans, and other Latinos are legal citizens of this of this country, both naturalized and by birth! I didn't recall the costume being specific to Latinos...I thought it was a plain old alien in a jumpsuit? Did I miss some detail? Yes, the alien was holding a "green card". Yeah a fake one! I can't believe this is being as blown out of proprtion! My son read this last night and laughed @ all of us and said just as I did, It's simply showing the Fact THEY ARE ILLEGAL!!! WHat they are doing is wrong and the rest of this is just nonsense!! He said to ask if he dresses up like a girl with big boobs(his word with a red face Just out of curiosity, this is the second time you have said the "green card" was "fake." What do you mean by that? What is a fake green card? I do not understand what you mean. Same as a fake ID (ya know those things many of us used when we were under age to get into bars and clubs(I know I did). If you get caught with one of those you don't get a slap on the wrist and walk away!! I still find it funny that this is so blown out of proportion I mean really, If my daughter were to dress up like Dora the explorer would that also be bad because she isn't latina(a whatever Dora is)? I just think this is silly. It's a costume, who cares! Also I love Aunt Jemima syrup, and heck ya if I could I'd dress up like her (with a syrup bottle in my hand) but unfortunatley to many would see it wrong! It's all just in good fun. |

We all have a different sense of humor. You know i am nuts and will laugh at almost anything. But, one thing i wont laugh at is to mock a race or etnicity. I say things all the time that dont make some people laugh and i risk saying the things i do and pray i dont offend someone, but i'm sure i have. Perhaps some people are more prudish then i am or something like that but there's a fine line as to what i would ever say or do to upset someones feelings because of their skin color. I remember my ex-father in law was a very prejudge person who would say things and then say "i was only kidding".....well i know he wasnt and one time i finally said to him, "it wasnt funny" The message boards dont really show who someone really is we just read what it seems like. You know what i mean? |
