As another poster pointed out, I bet there were plenty of our ancestors that got to our countries illegally.
I can just bet that all of us have done several things that are illegal, that is not a reason to condone this kind of crud.
That is a stupid way to teach a child right from wrong..here's a thought, how about telling them about the illegal immigrants and giving them the right info? Not have them parade around the streets on a fun night to poke fun at people.

I think it is in poor taste myself. I think this lowers oneself if a person thinks this sort of thing is ok. Just my opinion. It's making fun of people that are less fortunate - a group of people and a race in particular. Not just one person. I am not saying I don't think our borders should be tightened down alot more....Nothing to do with that. However making fun of people for being desperate to escape poverty in hopes of a better future just seems so wrong to me. Sad actually. I am glad I am person that could never condone such a thing. What is next? Muslim costumes with fake bombs stapped to them? It truly is the same mentality. It sends out a message of hate to a particular group of people.

ITA, with both you and Tammer, great posts! Would like to add it also racially profiled Mexicans and Latinos as illegals. Many Mexicans, and other Latinos are legal citizens of this of this country, both naturalized and by birth!

I didn't recall the costume being specific to Latinos...I thought it was a plain old alien in a jumpsuit? Did I miss some detail?

I am cutting and pasting from the opening post in this thread from Oreo123:

"the costume has an Alien's (space alien) head/mask..sometimes with a mustache (think Mexican) wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and carrying a GREEN CARD!"

WHat they are doing is wrong and the rest of this is just nonsense!! He said to ask if he dresses up like a girl with big boobs(his word with a red face ) would that be considered picking on a certain group? It's all in good fun!

Quote OspreyGirl: Picture this--

A parent brings his child to the door of the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan. The child is wearing the 'Illegal Alien' costume, with the thin Mexican mustache and the green card adorned on its chest.

Cesar asks, 'What are you suppose to be, little girl?'

And the little girl says, 'I'm just like you.'

How do you think Cesar should respond back to the child?

Note: Cesar crossed the border illegally in 1990, he ran his own dog training facility for 8 years...he became a legal resident in 2000, and just became an American citizen in 2009.

He should give her candy and leave it @ that cause guess what he BROKE THE LAW!! And got rewarded for it Nice judicial system we have!!
So what your sayin is who cares if he broke our laws right? their not important any way? IMO if you are in this country illegaly you don't deserve a green card! Im sorry but the end doesn't justify the means! If I get cought smokin weed am I gonna get away with it? NO so why should they? What they are doin is worse then me takin a few hits imo!! I love the idea that the laws are only for "certain people" thats a nice thing to teach our kids!!

I've never seen the costume pictured with a mustache, but I'll take your word one exists - does that automatically imply Mexican?

Why does everything have to go back to being political? Differences of opinion don't always apply to right and left. If you knew anytning about me you'd know I'm not a far right person, so to imply my questions have anything to do with my political views is a bit of a stretch. I don't intend disrespect Cats, but the comments that any time a person disagrees with the majority on this board, we are labeled as right wingers.... Perhaps you should look inward when you say that you automatically associate mustaches with Mexicans because that implys stereotyping to me.

My comment is about the costumes not about politics.

As a parent i went over and above to teach my son to love everyone regardless of skin color, race, religion, appearence and to not be a prejudice person. To take the time to learn about everyone regardless of their beliefs. Example: I would be sure he made friends with other races as i always had friends of all color. He learned how to play with children and became color blind. Putting a costume on a child that is purposely to laugh at someones etnicity is doing the opposite of teaching a child to be color blind. I never grew up prejudice and i continued this teaching and i know when my son becomes a father he will do the same. It takes a village to stop the spread of hatred.

For those who think its funny and have no problem with it, i believe its because perhaps you have never been made fun of in that way and have not dealt with what others have.

FYI ... i'm married 3 years to a Mexican man who was born in the USA....who's parents were once illegal but worked their asses off to become American citizens. They know and understand all about American History and are very proud to be here. Not all illegals are bad people.

I see...so if I were to show up to a black citizen's home dressed up in an Aunt Jemima costume holding a pancake platter with a 'Freed Slave' tag around my neck, should the person who opened the door just give me candy?

Sunnydaz--thank you for your eloquent post. One can only hope that your experience will enlighten the minds of those who choose to live in such a narrow minded and racist mindset.

Just out of curiosity, this is the second time you have said the "green card" was "fake." What do you mean by that? What is a fake green card? I do not understand what you mean.

actually i already know you are not on the far right, as a matter of fact a few posters on the right have found this costume distasteful, and actually, i find it racist
and as far as the mustaches as stereotyping, if the costume did not have a mustache, it would resemble an alien from outer space, if you saw an afro on a costume woluldn't you think it might be an african american? if you saw a milkmaid with long blond braids, wouldn't you think swedish?
anyway, the bottom line for me is i think this is a very insulting halloween costume, i don't think it is remotely funny
and i certainly hope the posters that know me don't think i stereotype

OT, i finally watched house for the first time, i enjoyed it
