Quote bigtimesoapfan: where do you find this stuff? I think it sounds ridiculous and there must be more behind it! I know all I did when I wanted to get married was go to the town hall asked for a form and filled it out. There was no judge involved. We were in/out in less than 5 min. if I remeber correctly. so something here imo just doesn't sound right imo

Ospreygirl, provided a link. It's orginally from the Associated Press. Here's the openin few sentences:
NEW ORLEANS – A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

I think the fact that the judge cited he allows Black people to use his bathrtoom says it all!!!!!

You know the old saying "open mouth insert foot"? I think it applies her! We've all said things with out thinking it out and it comes out badly! I don't think he meant it as bad as it sounds. imo I bet this is an older man and maybe in his experience he is right. imo I think all Religious our Judical officials who preform marriage ceremonys should make engaged couples take more time maybe jumop thru some hoops before marrying them! aybe it'd cut down on the divorce rate!

His decision had nothing to do with giving more thought to a life-time commitment...it had to do with him not wanting to marry two people who were from different races!
BTW, there really is no such thing as race since it has been proven that all humanbeings share the same DNA!!

EXACTLY and scientist have proven that "EVE" is from the continent of AFRICA! So, we are ALL really AFRICAN-AMERICAN(here in the U.S.). I sure hope someone sues this guy.

"Perhaps he's worried the kids will grow up and be president," said Bill Quigley, director of the Center for Constitutional Rights and Justice, referring to President Barack Obama, the son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas.

You NAILED IT right there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't want to belittle this issue but this thread and some of the posts makes me think of the beautifully scripted commercial that shows children playing in the park. The mom tells her white kids NOT to play with the black children in the same park. At this point the little white girl says to her mom "but why?"

I paused when I first saw this commercial. It was so enlightening! This behavior is taught and enforced throughout many lives and may never end. Sad but true!

It's sad to think that many still embrace the "Separate but Equal" mentally in the year 2009. No matter how many say they are not practicing racist behavior their commments and actions display otherwise. Comments and actions speak volumes! Many of us would pause if our children brought home a person of a different race, faith and/or gender for that matter. It's how we adapt to it that tells the story.

When your job/career requires you to help/serve everyone you must be prepared to do so or suffer the consequences. I can't believe a judge voiced his biasness so openly. How can a active judge think that such comments are OK? He truly is ready for retirement.

Okay,I believe he is a Justice of the Peace - - not the same as a judge on the bench - - THANK GOD!

Also, just saw on CNN that the governor of Louisiana wants him fired - - -

I hope if he has children that one of them will decide to marry someone of color!!!!

Thanks for clarifying! Justice of the peace ...how ironic.

GUESS WHO JUST RESIGNED?

A Louisiana justice of the peace who refused to marry a couple because the bride was white and groom was black resigned Tuesday.

Keith Bardwell, who is white, quit the post with a one-sentence statement to Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne and no explanation of his decision: "I do hereby resign the office of Justice of the Peace for the Eighth Ward of Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, effective November 3, 2009."

You know--I'm a bit surprised--a man with a lot to say about why he wouldn't grant a marriage license to an interracial couple INSTEAD had very little to say in his resignation.
