Im sure im gonna get jumped on but I can understand that. I was raised that way. My parents(who also had friends of different "colors") always said it was wrong to mix, they had no problem with my having friends of different "colors" but friends was it. My best friends dad is black and my mom treated her like an extra daughter. She didn't treat her differently. My mom always said that about it being tough on the kids(which she was right, my bff was often the butt of jokes in school(i always stood by her side). So I can see what the guy is saying but from my experience it doesn't make you a bigot imo (Im not really how to explain it so like this guy open mouth incert foot.)

Ospreygirl, provided a link. It's orginally from the Associated Press. Here's the openin few sentences:
NEW ORLEANS – A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

I think the fact that the judge cited he allows Black people to use his bathrtoom says it all!!!!!

You know the old saying "open mouth insert foot"? I think it applies her! We've all said things with out thinking it out and it comes out badly! I don't think he meant it as bad as it sounds. imo I bet this is an older man and maybe in his experience he is right. imo I think all Religious our Judical officials who preform marriage ceremonys should make engaged couples take more time maybe jumop thru some hoops before marrying them! aybe it'd cut down on the divorce rate!

His decision had nothing to do with giving more thought to a life-time commitment...it had to do with him not wanting to marry two people who were from different races!
BTW, there really is no such thing as race since it has been proven that all humanbeings share the same DNA!!

You are so right, there is only one human race. Clearly, this judge sees two shades of other rather than two people who just wanted a signed marriage license. It's sick beyond understanding that a judge would do something like this. I don't care what his personal beliefs are...you leave that crap at the door and provide the customer service you're paid to do. Shudder to think about the medical folks like nurses, who are in charge with providing medical care to anyone but would withhold service to a patient because of a skin color, gender, etc. Sadly as we are seeing, it happens...

brb...gotta go, be back later

Quote OspreyGirl: So does he think Barack was a mistake too? This judge was trying to spare "any kids from this couple's union" from having a tough time in life...

Last time I checked, it takes two to make a baby. Not two plus a judge's signature. The baby is not going to demand before he comes out, asking for his parents' marriage license or pictures of the wedding...so what gives?

Oh, yes, I remember...he lets black people use his bathroom...I wonder if they are allowed to use his drinking fountain too!

HEY, OSPREY! Do you "really" care what someone like that thinks? Most of us DON'T and just walk away from that. I really have BETTER things to do.........................................................

Yes, I do care that there are people in positions of power who should be protecting the rights of citizens, namely apply for a marriage license, but sit on his racist a@@ and pronounce he has nothing against black people, but won't sign a license to let one marry someone non-black.

If you can't handle requests like that, step down from the bench. I wouldn't expect a doctor who is pro-life to be forced to give abortions. If it bothers him that much, then don't be in the position to dash someone else's desire just because you don't "think it's right."

It's unjust and I don't sleep on fools like this--they've been excused for too long and swatted away as ignorant hicks, but as we've seen the 400% increase in racist hate towards the president, the astronomical rise in gun purchases by idiots anticipating a "race war" etc, this judge's ignorance should not be anywhere near a court of law nor does he deserve to hold any title of honor. He cannot be impartial and uphold civil rights equally for any citizen, and I hope the Justice Dept comes down on him hard...

WHEW! That felt good...lol

Thank you Osprey! It felt good for me to hear you say it too. This is exactly the stuff that is alive and well in this country and getting worse everyday. I had great hopes that things where getting better as far as racial or sexual discrimation were concerned. Sadly I was wrong. The numbers of these racists are growing and we are regressing. Bad thing is the town is probably full of people with his same views. SO kind of him to allow his restroom to be used that way. What a guy!

True, everyone has a right to their beliefs, however; in this particular case the couple was not interested nor did they ask this racist, ignorant fool (KB) about his beliefs, they asked him to marry them. IMO, his belief system and statement/s re having Black friends, them using his bathroom, not marrying the couple, etc, makes him a racist – don’t know what else to call it? Further to that, I highly doubt (KB) took an oath not to marry folks who are grown, can make their own decisions and are not of the same ‘race.’ Just like your older cuz who made a decision not to perform A-word, this couple made the decision to get married and this racist JP did infringe on their beliefs. Say what you will – racism is alive and well – Unfortunately!!!

Osprey... started my own thread about this early this morning guess no one saw it

this is the article

NEW ORLEANS – A white Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have.

Bardwell said he asks everyone who calls about marriage if they are a mixed race couple. If they are, he does not marry them, he said.

Bardwell said he has discussed the topic with blacks and whites, along with witnessing some interracial marriages. He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said.

"There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage," Bardwell said. "I think those children suffer and I won't help put them through it."

If he did an interracial marriage for one couple, he must do the same for all, he said.

"I try to treat everyone equally," he said.

Bardwell estimates that he has refused to marry about four couples during his career, all in the past 2 1/2 years.

Beth Humphrey, 30, and 32-year-old Terence McKay, both of Hammond, say they will consult the U.S. Justice Department about filing a discrimination complaint.

Humphrey, an account manager for a marketing firm, said she and McKay, a welder, just returned to Louisiana. She is white and he is black. She plans to enroll in the University of New Orleans to pursue a masters degree in minority politics.

"That was one thing that made this so unbelievable," she said. "It's not something you expect in this day and age."

Humphrey said she called Bardwell on Oct. 6 to inquire about getting a marriage license signed. She says Bardwell's wife told her that Bardwell will not sign marriage licenses for interracial couples. Bardwell suggested the couple go to another justice of the peace in the parish who agreed to marry them.

"We are looking forward to having children," Humphrey said. "And all our friends and co-workers have been very supportive. Except for this, we're typical happy newlyweds."

"It is really astonishing and disappointing to see this come up in 2009," said American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana attorney Katie Schwartzmann. She said the Supreme Court ruled in 1967 "that the government cannot tell people who they can and cannot marry."

The ACLU sent a letter to the Louisiana Judiciary Committee, which oversees the state justices of the peace, asking them to investigate Bardwell and recommending "the most severe sanctions available, because such blatant bigotry poses a substantial threat of serious harm to the administration of justice."

"He knew he was breaking the law, but continued to do it," Schwartzmann said.

According to the clerk of court's office, application for a marriage license must be made three days before the ceremony because there is a 72-hour waiting period. The applicants are asked if they have previously been married. If so, they must show how the marriage ended, such as divorce.

Other than that, all they need is a birth certificate and Social Security card.

The license fee is $35, and the license must be signed by a Louisiana minister, justice of the peace or judge. The original is returned to the clerk's office.

"I've been a justice of the peace for 34 years and I don't think I've mistreated anybody," Bardwell said. "I've made some mistakes, but you have too. I didn't tell this couple they couldn't get married. I just told them I wouldn't do it."

This guy should not even be considered a human being. I am guessing that should he have a child of his own give birth to a mixed race child he would at least let his grandchild "Use his bathroom". And where does he get his so called statistics? Maybe the local branch of the KKK.

I guess im bad too then cause I was raised the same way. My best friend has a white mom and black dad. She used to spend lots of time in our home(kids in school were awful to her but I was always by her side). As adults now we spend time in each others homes and our kids play together. I don't consider myself a racist. and neither does she. so I guess it's all about perception. I don't really know how to explain it other than that. I get what yor saying but from my personal experience it's 2 different things. Being a racist means partially imo that you purposely go out of your way to ostarasize and make outcasts those different then you. I was not raised that way (only that it wasn't okay to mix races) but it wasn't like they beat it into me only when dating did it ever come up and honestly it was never even an issue. imo

Hey Wanna--he freaked out because the groom is black and the bride is white...that's really what went down. That whole "she's one of our women" mentality, that notion that this type of woman cannot be 'defiled' by a black man because she is pure as new winter's snow...LMAO...what a jerk this guy is!

I think Yahoo or CNN updated the story and showed a picture of the groom...once I saw it, I knew what went down...racism, was at the core of the license denial...the LAST THING that judge wants to SEE are biracial kids from that union.

He probably would have had a heart attack if the bride was black and the groom was white.

i just loved reading that and was going to post it but had to sign off, LOL, truer words were never spoken, that is exactly what that judge is afraid of

editing to say, just read a number of people are calling for his license, he needs to be off the bench and quickly
