This thread is being opened in fairness to the Republican and Democratic no bash threads. I hope that by having Liberal and Independent no bash threads that it will help to decrease the amount of political arguments and tension on the boards. |

Nobody seems to be interested in the Independent thread, so I thought I'd ask - what exactly makes an independent? Sometimes I think I lean more toward this particular group, so I thought I'd throw the question out there.... |

typically independent means you can vote either way if you are registered as one, during early voting. On this thread, since at the same time there was a liberal thread made, I guess this is the conservative independent thread? |

I understand the independents can't vote in the primary because they have no party affiliation. I always assumed independent was right in the middle of democrat and republican and most independents support some issues from both camps. However, if that were the case, I'd think there would be a LOT more independents. |

There are some things I agree with both parties, but I definately don't agree with all that either side presents. There should be either a ligimate Independent party or get rid of all the parties and just call ourselves American! No left or right just Americans the vote we cast will speak volums! |

For instance, Illinois has a semi-open primary election process. The requirements: You must be a registered voter! If you have a party preference, you must declare it before voting and recieve that party's ballot! What makes a person an independent? It's simple! You prefer no particular party to include the Independent Party! You are generally a centrist or moderate and hold middle of the road beliefs! Each party has values I like, and each party has exptremes that I dislike! I want national health care, but I feel businesses who employ people to work, ought to pay for those people and their dependents to have health care, regardless of how big their business is! (Anti-Democrat!) For those who are unemployed, that should be the governments' responsibility! I think businesses should be regulated (so anti-Republican) so that they do not take advantage of the consumer! I believe that our young people should do at least two years of some type of service to the country! They values this country so little, and are not aware of the hardships others suffer, in this country! |

So, is Joe Liebermann considered an Independent or a disgruntled Democrat who supports Republicans? |

Most politicians will take a party stand because of funding. How nice it would be, if campaigning didn't involve massive amounts of funds, that go to the candidate in the end, anyway! |

Quote OspreyGirl: So, is Joe Liebermann considered an Independent or a disgruntled Democrat who supports Republicans? I tend to believe the latter. His track record doesn't scream a desire to be separate from the Dem or Repub party. i see him as an opportunistic feeder...lol..By fact of his appearance at the Repub convention last year, and other issues, he clearly is not operating within the confines of "no party affiliation." I tend to take someone saying they are an Independent with a grain of salt, and watch how they tend to vote as an indicator of whether or not they are truly a rolling stone with no party. Most times IMO, I tend to see Indys either leaning Dem or Repub...these are the two dominant political parties and I think it's hard for someone to go vote on election day for or against something, when the options of Yes or No are typically coming from the opposing sides of the majority parties. Ex. Dems want you to vote No on this issue, Repubs want you to vote Yes. What do you do--write, "I abstain" on the ballot? How do you vote under those circumstances? Write in your responses..vote for the option that is the most separate...sure, you can do this, but I see most Indys eventually dipping their toes in either (or both) Dem and Repub waters. Just an observation, people...this is not a bash or attack. Thank you. I am registerd with The Working Families Party, and in this past election I voted for Ralph Nadar...what does that make me? Currently in my city there is a Mayoral race between the incumbant, an Independent, and a Democrat. So far I plan not to vote in the election because I do not care for either of them. I think a Democart supports everything the Democratic party does, and a Republican supports everything the Republican party does, and to me that is the biggest problem in this country!!!! |

They values this country so little, and are not aware of the hardships others suffer, in this country! I am in the same boat. There are some things I firmly support on the Republican side and some things that fall into Democrat favor, so I often wonder where I really belong. Since the core of my belief is that the free market should drive business, and that the working class shouldn't have to pay extraordinary tax to support the lazy, I have to lean Republican. However, when it comes to the religious aspect, I say "live and let live" when it comes to homosexuality, abortion, stem cell research, etc. They are simply none of my business!! And lastly, I agree with you Touched...that every young person should give two years to the country. I'd like to see kids be required to either spend two years in the military, or go directly to college. |
