you know i just read one of the stories about the lady that was not induced by kaiser b/c they didn't want to risk the extra cost of a c-section. i have a real life story that involves kaiser to add to this. i had a friend that was pregnant about 5 years ago..she was small in stature and was insured under kaiser. as it was, the hospital doctors wanted to induce her before term b/c the baby was large. when she was a few days overdue, it was very worrysome b/c the umbilical cord was dangerously close to her baby's neck. sadly they waited over 1 week to induce despite doctor's urging her to induce before she was due as it was..it was too late when they did. the cord did wrap around her baby's neck. the story is heartbreaking and i hate to even remember it but i still think of kaiser as scum b/c they kept putting off inducing someone who was high risk as it was. she is definitely not under kaiser anymore and despite the very sad story, she has 2 healthy children now. that story always made me sick tho.

The insurance companies are all scum. They are "THE DEATH PANELS". Greedy insurance companies hold our lives in their hands. Well maybe one hand cause the other one is grabbing our money. If they are not stopped we will all be at their mercy. They needed to have regulations in place NOW!

Horizon BC/BS Was Delivering Letters to Hospital Patients, Warning Them To Leave. And They Wonder Why We Hate Them.

Posted: 10 Oct 2009 04:00 PM PDT

Health care activists confront Horizon BCBSNJ Executive Tom Rubino outside Horizon headquarters in Newark NJ.

I was interested in this story, not the least because, well, this is my COBRA carrier and Horizon's crazy reimbursement rates are the reason why my doctor was kicked out of their network. But really, it could be anybody's insurer. (Oh, and please: If you're having a problem like this with an insurer, call your congressman's office. They usually have a staffer who does nothing but handle insurance problems for constituents.)

BAYONNE, N.J. -- One February morning, a courier arrived at the front desk of Bayonne Medical Center, trying to get to a patient's bedside. His mission: to deliver a letter from New Jersey's dominant health insurer warning that the patient would face a huge hospital bill if he did not leave right away.

Hospital security guards stopped the courier -- and 13 others who came soon after -- before they reached patients' rooms. But then came the faxes and, after that, the letters mailed to patients' doctors and homes. Told that her health plan would not pay for her to stay in the hospital, a 35-year-old social worker named Lisa with a severe lung infection was so unnerved that, tethered to an IV pole dripping antibiotics into her arm, she began to pack her gym bag before a staff member coaxed her back into bed.

The hardball tactics being used to pry patients from their sickbeds illustrate the colliding financial interests that pervade U.S. health care. It is a tug of war over where patients are treated, who decides how much care they receive and -- fundamentally -- which parts of the health-care industry gain or lose when people become ill.

it gets worse and worse and people just do not see it
status quo...keep the insurance companies earning obscene profits

How are insurance companies considered "death panels" when everything they say they will cover is outlined in an individual's summary plan description. Insurance companies don't deny care, they can only deny payment and most often their denials are for services that are not FDA approved, experimental, or simply not a covered benefit as outlined in the policy that every person receives when they sign up for benefits.

If a person disagrees with a decision made by an insurance company, there is an appeals process that goes through an internal as well as an EXTERNAL review board. The external review board consists of doctors who are not associated whatsoever with the health insurance company. When the govertnment takes over healthcare, do you really think you'll have a right to appeal to the fedeal government?

I have had great experiences with my health insurance company. I am well aware ahead of time what is & isn't covered. And you're correct - insurance companies can be sued, & are VERY often . . . and there are other checks in place. This will not be the case with the feds. Can you imagine...Uh yes I'd like to sue the federal government because they are denying me coverage on such and such . . . Not going to happen. There will be ZERO recourse.

Health insurance should IMO work more like car insurance. I have car insurance, but I don't expect it to cover my oil changes or pay for gas when I fill up my car. This idea that every dime of a doctor visit and/or a prescription should be covered is ludicrous. We all understand the concept of paying money in return for services (well most people do). We don't tell the car repair man that we're not paying for our new transmission b/c 'car repairs are a basic American right.' I understand that our health is not the same as keeping a car in tune, etc. - but we expect to have to pay for service to our car and yet somehow think someone else should pick up the tab in matters of our health. Do you know how much more training is required to be licensed to practice medicine v. what is required to work on cars? Whatever I pay to keep my car running, you can bet I will pay, & should expect to pay, a great deal more to the person who can keep my body running and I don't want the government to have any say in how doctors manage to keep my body running. Whatever I am willing to pay for, I get.

What if tomorrow Obama announced that every American deserves a car, one that runs well, & deserves free gas to keep that car running? Most of us would immediately say 'That would be great...but it's way too expensive.'
