Hi fellow bird lovers
I bought some chicken scratch and the birds do like it.
Thanks for the tip.
I take the magazine Birds and Blooms and anyone who loves birds and flowers should subscribe. It's great.
I make my own suet lots of times from a recipe I got out of the magazine.

1 cup lard
1 cup crunchy peanut butter
1/3 cup sugar
2 cups corn meal
1 cup birdseed
2 cups oatmeal
1 cup flour

Melt lard. Mix all ingredients. Put suet in plastic for storage, and freeze till you're ready to use it.
I save old suet containers and put in freezer till I use. Also, sometimes I use mostly sunflower seeds. I've also used raisins too. Lots of things to mix in.
I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my Juncos (snowbirds.) Should be any day now.

You guys just gave me an idea about how to go about feeding my birds without encouraging the rats coming to the yard. What I think I will do is drill a holes in the bottom of a big pinecones, and mount them on poles around the yard and away from trees, fencing or the house. Thanks for the feed ideas and recipes!

Grease the poles just in case the little "ratons" decide to attempt a climb - - and they will come sliding down. Would be entertaining also.

I'll bet you guys think I live in the slums with all the rats running around. Haven't seen one in a couple of years and I want to keep it that way. LOL about greasing the poles.

Hey Clicquot1, don't you just LOVE Garden Ridge? There's one not too far from where I live and I love going in. Especially around or before Christmas. I was there in Sept and Christmas decorations were already out.
I've got to get back before they all get gone. I collect Old Christmas figurines and want to see if they have any.

My husband and I just got down to our cabin for a few days of R&R. I just got finished setting up the "bird buffet". I'm sure all of my feathered friends will be tweeting at the crack of dawn tomorrow.

The stars are shining bright and smell of a fire in the fireplace is wonderful. We already saw one deer run into the woods as we drove past my Dad's house.

Tomorrow is a day of fall yard work....and a big pan of lasagna for dinner.

The only thing I hate is that I don't have DSL here...and the dial-up is slow as molasses which is a real bummer. The phone lines are so old here out in the "boonies".

Oh, yes LYNN I love GR especially their christmas ornaments and decorations. i bought so many of the VICTORIAN ORNAMENTS several years ago. I love CHRISTMAS! My husband teases me and says I have enough ornaments to decorate several trees. We buy a real tree every year, my favorite is the BLUE SPRUCE but we can't get them every year. The GR that is closest to my house is the ORIGINAL GR it has 3 bldgs. and sits on over an acre of land. Gotta love GR! I have also found plenty of ornamental pottery there..................................................

Well, I thought I would bring this thread forward again as I'm still having lots of visitors in the front & back yard(but more feeders in the back). Just bought 100lbs. of hen scratch & 50 lbs. of deer corn and it was only 23.oo and change love the price and have been doing it for over 10 years now.
My oak trees have dropped acorns so I don't have to feed the birds and squirrels as much but they are still coming into the yard. i love it when they get in the bird baths(I have three)and play in the water & sing and flap their little wings, it's so AWESOME to watch!

Besides the rain and winds of Ida plus the nor'easter, I haven't been able to feed the birds as I normally would. 5 inches of rain have fallen so far. Yesterday I looked out and the winds had blown one of my feeders over. Cardinals were sitting all-around in the trees. My husband had to go put it back in the ground.
Still waiting for my snowbirds (juncos) to arrive. Seems they are late this year.

I don't know where you live but in Ashville the juncos are already here. You should probably be seeing them soon.

Thanks januaryrose. I live near Burlington NC.
It's funmy but this morning I was walking (Sunday) and I saw several snowbirds in a neighbors yard, but still none have come to my feeders, that I've noticed. Guess I'll look more closly.

Wow - - it has really been a bad spring and summer here in my yard (Jax, FL). I had many different kinds of birds last year and this year just about nothing but doves. Really disappointing. Even ordered some of the chicken (hen) scratch and it still doesn't help. Don't know what happened. I really miss them.

My next door neighbor who has many birdfeeders, and is also a little strange, told me that the reason the birds have not been around is because "the end of the world is coming" and the birds sense this!!!

Wonder where they all went to hide??? I want to go too!
