Quote StL Cardinal Fan: Quote clicquot1: Quote lynnw: I love my birds and have 6 or 7 feeders, not counting the finch feeder bags, but can't keep them filled year round; has anyone seen the price of nijer seed? I do enjoy it when the gold finches start turning yellow. The problem we have are squirrels and we've put guards up at a few feeders. We have cardinals, titmice, sparrows, finches, bluebirds, as well as other kinds. The hummers just left, I miss them, but the juncos (sonwbirds) should arrive soon. We also have lots of doves, but have trouble with a hawk getting them occasionally. They're slow moving and can't get away from them. I really hate seeing feathers in my feeding area cause I know what's happened. I love my birds, even though feeding them gets expensive. LYNNW, maybe you should try chicken scratch(both STLOUIS & I use it because it is much better price, also use deer corn, both can be bought at feed stores!). I also use the chicken scratch because it attracts better birds. That bird seed you buy at like Wal Mart with the millet seems to attract more sparrows and starlings. Well, thanks StL Cardinal Fan and all the others. I do not live near a feed store but just ordered some chicken scratch online. I ordered two 10 pounds bags at $4.00 a piece. Not bad? Bird seed, as everyone has said, is way too expensive now. I have one bird bath and four feeders. I absolutely love watching them eating and then going in for a drink of water. It is also really funny to watch some of them take a bath in the bird bath. I also have one squirrel who has been around for two years. One of his little front feet is crippled so I always recognize him. He will even come up on the porch for a peanut. I don't mind if he shares with the birds. I call him "Stumpy"! Thanks for your ideas about the chicken scratch. |

If so, how many do you have, sizes, what kinds of birds do ya'll get, sizes of the birds? Do yo have bird houses too? How about bird baths? Well, my husband and I love to feed the birds but instead of buying the wild bird seed or the other commercial birdseed, we go the local feed store(there are many in SAN ANTONIO)and purchase 100lbs. of chicken scratch and 50 punds of deer corn and it's about 25.oo-27.oo, GREAT PRICE! We don't have any bird houses and it's a shame because the purple martins do come to SAN ANTONIO! We feed the deer corn to the squirrels, they just love it and our little family is so fat. We have a huge planter that is hanging and fill it with corn, the white-wing doves love it too. I will also scatter some corn on the ground. We have 2 small flat, decrative planters that ususally allows birds to eat 1 at a time, 1 very small feeder that looks like a house for wrens and robins, a wooden feeder that the doves just love, I also bought a couple of new feeders for the bluejays and red birds that come into the yard, we have 2 different types of woodpeckers that also visit us. I have 2 birdbaths in the backyard, just love to watch the little guys get in their and sing while they are taking their bath, it's so cute. Anyone else enjoy feeding the birds? oh, I forgot my humingbird feeder. I also feed my birds chicken scratch and black oilers that I usually get at the feed store. I don't get many good birds here in the city but I get gobs at my cabin in the Ozarks on the Gasconade River. My cabin is on a bluff and I get all kinds of birds. I even have some bald eagles that nest close by. In the winter the eagles fly up and down the river looking for fish to swoop down and catch. Those eagles are so beautiful! I fill up all of the bird feeders (or as my husband says put out the buffet)as soon as I get there. I love to sit on the sun porch with a good book, something simmering in the crock pot and watch the birds. The thing I do hate is those darn racoons that tear up my bird feeders, I have to get the extra sturdy ones. I usually put out some corn on the cob for the squirrels too. I usually put out a salt block for the deer too. do you ever any farther south in Missouri?like to Roaring River State Park? i live any about 10 minutes from there. My cabin is actually 25+ miles north of Rolla on Hwy 63. Where is Roaring River State Park located?? roaring river state park is outside of cassville and seligman on hwy 112. at the jct of f and 112. it is very close to the ark. state line in barry county ,mo . it is about 1:45 drive from Springfield. I imagine that we have been very close to there, one of our favorite fall weekend get-away's is to Eureka Springs, AK. It is so pretty in that area in the fall. Not going to get that way this year though, my husband and I are going to Panama City to see his son. We always like to stop in Ozark, MO and eat at Lambert's and have some "throwed rolls" and chicken fried steak. |

Quote cats meow: this is a terrific thread, i am going shopping tomorrow, for some new feeders and then on to the feed store Hi, cats it's been a few days and I just wanted to find out if you have gotten some new feeders and tried out the feed store yet? It really is so much cheaper when you get the chicken scratch and we also get the corn. Sometimes the deer corn is on sale at ACADEMY SPORTS CENTER which also carries alot of huntinmg equipment. We have gotten it for 2.99 for a 20 lb. bag and I think it's 7.98 for 40lbs. at the feed store. Been buying the scratch for about 9 years now, and the birds love it. |

Quote clicquot1: What kind of bird feeders do you guys have that will discourage vermin? Like I said before, roof rats like birdseed too and they would come pick up what the birds scratched to the ground. Any ideas about feeders and placement, anyone? I'd love to bring back my Turtle Doves, finches, etc. I won't put poison out for the rats because other wildlife can also be affected by it as well.

Actually, I had rats at the old house I lived in last year. I knew they were under the house so I put the Combat rat poison under the house and it got rid of them. I knew the birds and squirrels would not be going under the house so I took the chance. I don't know where your rats live, but if you can put the poison somewhere where the birds won't get it, it might help. Those rats will find it, believe me. |

SOME of my feeders are suspended by a chain and in a 100+ year-old OAK TREE, they are actually draped from one tree to another on each side, so that I have 4 sections hanging down so I can hang feeders, baskets(I have a huge planter that I put corn in so the squirrels/doves can actually get into it and eat), and a couple of hanging plants mixed in. The only things that can get to them are birds(my doves are so fat they look like PIGEONS/SQUABS) and the squirrels. I have 3 smaller feeders for the smaller birds in my persimmon trees and two other smaller house-type feeders hanging from planter hangers from the side of the house on the pool side. I did see a small mouse during the summer but I think one of the cats got it(it was living in a stack of firewood) We had an especially dry(drought)hot summer with over 40 days of 100+ degree days(I think 45)and had a few critters come to drink, as did many of the neighbors. The cats I was referring to belong to the neighbors and they jump into one of the OAKS and go across the roof and come down one of the OAKS and hunt over the feeder as my husband calls it. I guess the cats keep them away. What are roof rats? Are they just bigger rats, or what? As I have never heard of them. Don't know if any of this helps, or not. |

Quote clicquot1: Wow, you really have a good kind of a set up there! Roof rats are somewhat bigger, have longer tails and bigger heads. They like to nest up in high places, like the attic - guess they feel more secure when up high. They are mostly grain eaters and will breed in debris around the house if you have lots of vines or refuse laying around. They aren't really that destructive but are hoggish about the bird seed! I just don't want them around. Anyway, I lost a big 'ol Modesto Ash tree awhile back and also a Calif. Lilac which got huge, so I have no way to string lines around. Maybe I could get a couple of poles and drive them in the ground and string clothes line or something. I'll bet the rats could walk that too, the little buggers. Haven't had any around for a long time tho - not since I removed the feeders. I even tried to devise a type of 'seed catcher' underneath the feeder on a pole, but that didn't work very well. You guys have lots of imagination, dream somthing up for me.

It came yesterday and I put some out - - now I have two birds out there that I don't even recognize - - almost like a little tit bird, but I haven't seen one of those in the fall - - what the heck?? Can these little critters smell the difference between regular bird seed from the grocery store and chicken scratch? By the way, when I got the two 10 pound packages it said "hen scratch" instead of chicken scratch - - thought that was funny. Just a city girl here, sometimes wishing she did live in the country - - would kill to live in the country!!! Never thought you guys would have me buying chicken scratch!!! Thank you!!!! Hey PUDDY, besides chicken scratch which is referred to as hen scratch I also buy deer corn. Many birds love this also, especially the white wing doves. The doves have gotten so big my husband calls them squabs/piegeons. There is a BIG difference in the quality and quantity of the birds you get when you use the chicken/hen scratch and deer corn and the deer corn rather than the wildbird seed. I'm also curious to try the pinecone w/peanutbutter with the scratch rolled in the scratch. Do you also feed the hummingbirds? I never really had any luck with them until a lady told me to take 3 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar and boil it and then after it cools put 1/2 the mixture in the feeder and it works like a charm and much cheaper than the commercial hummingbird stuff. |

First of all, clic - - it's nice to talk to you over here in the Lounge - - tired of "debating" with you on the Y&R thread - - You know, my next door neighbor has tried with the hummingbirds and he knows very much about birds - - but it doesn't work....maybe Jacksonville, Florida does not have that many hummings....I absolutely love them....when I was a child I remember my mother calling my sister and I out to watch a few in the back yard - - and I still, to this day, am so amazed the they hardly ever land - - I loved them. But, I will wait and see what else this "scratch" brings in the next few days. Jacksonville is so wierd as far as weather goes...it has been close to the 90's in the last few weeks and tomorrow it is dropping into the 40's. I love cold weather, but we never get a break - - like, we never get a fall - - it goes from summer to winter, overnight!!! Don't know what birds stay around here in Florida during the winter, but, believe me, even in Jacksonville, it can drop below 20's. Guess I will see what birdies stay around and enjoy the new "scratch" I know last year when it dropped, unexpectedly, into the lower 20's, I had a few poor little doves skating across the ice in the bird bath - - as I did not know it had frozen over. Oh well - - this is going to be interesting. Later! |

On the hummer feed, the ones that know caution on mixing it too rich, normally it is 4 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar. I have worked around "bird people" most of my life and it is thought that if the mix is too sweet that it messes with their metabolism and their ability to digest it. Have done the 4 to 1 for many years and have loads of hummers. Of course where you live has a lot to do with it, I am fortunate enough to be on the migrating route and have a lot. Sometimes too many, in the summer months I fill three feeders every day!! Also they used to say take the feeders down the first of Oct. but where I am we have learned to leave them up until we see no more coming to the feeders, they are heading to Mexico and need all the help they can get. Also, I boil my water and then add the sugar, works for me that way. If you do not have a large number, put only half of it out at a time as it spoils very easy in the sun. If it is not fresh, they will not touch it!! Peatnut butter on the pine cone works great for me, also any kind of fruit, raisins, cut up apples, etc. It is like if you built it, they will come.....if you put it out they will come!! Hope that this helps you to get lots of hummers!! It makes me happy for so many people to take the time and money to feed those wonderful creatures and what a pleasure to watch. |

Shorty, thank you for correcting me I should have consulted my receipe that I had written down before posting about it. I do enjoy feeding the birds and squirrels and it keeps my dogs occupied when they are outside. They just love to watch the birds and will lay by the pool for hours looking out into the yard watching them, and will "flush" them for a powere trip when ready. The squirrels will torment the dogs all day, if they have their way. My husband just loves to watch them also and jokes about how fat the doves are. The hummingbirds are still coming(live in TEXAS) but I do need to change their feed more often(thanks for that). I think I will try the PB pinecone today. THANKS! |
