Who has birdfeeders/birdbaths?

Does anyone enjoy feeding the birds in birdfeeders? If so, how many do you have,sizes,what kinds of birds do ya'll get, sizes of the birds? Do yo have bird houses too? How about bird baths? Well, my husband and I love to feed the birds but instead of buying the wild bird seed or the other commercial birdseed, we go the local feed store(there are many in SAN ANTONIO)and purchase 100lbs. of chicken scratch and 50 punds of deer corn and it's about 25.oo-27.oo, GREAT PRICE! We don't have any bird houses and it's a shame because the purple martins do come to SAN ANTONIO! We feed the deer corn to the squirrels, they just love it and our little family is so fat. We have a huge planter that is hanging and fill it with corn, the white-wing doves love it too. I will also scatter some corn on the ground. We have 2 small flat, decrative planters that ususally allows birds to eat 1 at a time, 1 very small feeder that looks like a house for wrens and robins, a wooden feeder that the doves just love, I also bought a couple of new feeders for the bluejays and red birds that come into the yard, we have 2 different types of woodpeckers that also visit us. I have 2 birdbaths in the backyard, just love to watch the little guys get in their and sing while they are taking their bath, it's so cute. Anyone else enjoy feeding the birds? oh, I forgot my humingbird feeder. |

I even have some bald eagles that nest close by. In the winter the eagles fly up and down the river looking for fish to swoop down and catch. Those eagles are so beautiful! I fill up all of the bird feeders (or as my husband says put out the buffet)as soon as I get there. I love to sit on the sun porch with a good book, something simmering in the crock pot and watch the birds. The thing I do hate is those darn racoons that tear up my bird feeders, I have to get the extra sturdy ones. I usually put out some corn on the cob for the squirrels too. I usually put out a salt block for the deer too. |

I used to have both, but had a bad experience with feeding the birds. Roof rats came from far and wide to my yard (and garage) so had to put a stop to it. Also, I had two swallow nests under the eves of the house for years. Someone in the little family always came back the following year to redecorate and raise their young. The same year the rats came, a big ol' Pinion Jay came and removed all the babies from their nests - hence, noone was left for the following year to return and raise more babies. The nests are now abandoned. I had them for over twenty years. |

We did have a mouse that got into the hot tub lining , but hubbie caught it. We had a TERIBLE SUMMER this year because of the drought and several people like us have pools and so we had racoons, possums(they're good, kill snakes), and armadillos coming and causing all kinds of mischief. My husband at first trapped the racoons(4) and did a catch and release but they found their way back to the neighborhood. So then he had to catch and KILL, altogether he killed 9 racoons and two armadillos. We also have cats(not wild ones they belong to neighbors)that climb one of our big OAKS and climb into the back yard when the dogs are inside and hunt the birds while they are feeding. Of course this makes me so mad, but what can you do? |

Hubbie got some of those pellet like things and the birds and squirrels wouldn't touch them. That is so awesome that ya'll have the EAGLES and that they aren't the ones from PHILLY(sorry, bad joke). We have a couple of red wing hawks that will visit ever so often, the other birds will clear out for awhile. The neighborhood kitties come into the yard when the dogs are inside and hubbie says they are hunting over a feeder.LOL! Sometimes we will be sitting outside reading the paper and the dogs will be laying by their big ole waterdish just witing for as many birds and squirrels to gather as possible and then the smaller dog(part chow part SHELTIE) will wait, wait, wait, wait, and then run anf FLUSH all the birds. What noise they can make flying away. I just love to watch the birds and squirrels in the yard. Those squirrels know how to torment the big CHOW, it's so funny. |

Black oilers....just another name for the small black sunflower seeds. I usually have 3 or 4 kinds of woodpeckers, tufted tit mouse, cardinals, cedar wax wings, purple and gold finches, nuthatches, junco's. There are also lots of bluebirds, tannigers and indigo buntings but they don't come to the feeders and I usually don't see them in the winter. We have also been seeing more armadillos in the past few years. A couple of years ago the racoons got open the cabinet under the porch and ate 5 blocks of heavy duty mouse poison that I had gotten at the feed store...they were back the next night wanting more, those buggers are hard to kill. |

I love my birds and have 6 or 7 feeders, not counting the finch feeder bags, but can't keep them filled year round; has anyone seen the price of nijer seed? I do enjoy it when the gold finches start turning yellow. |

We have cardinals, titmice, sparrows, finches, bluebirds, as well as other kinds. The hummers just left, I miss them, but the juncos (sonwbirds) should arrive soon. We also have lots of doves, but have trouble with a hawk getting them occasionally. They're slow moving and can't get away from them. I really hate seeing feathers in my feeding area cause I know what's happened. I love my birds, even though feeding them gets expensive. LYNNW, maybe you should try chicken scratch(both STLOUIS & I use it because it is much better price, also use deer corn, both can be bought at feed stores!). |
