Australian Black Face Performance...

By now, most of you have heard about Harry Connick Jr's outrage about a skit done on an Australian show, where the performers were in black face, afro wigs, and shucking and jiving around as a tribute to the Jackson Five...the performers call themselves the Jackson Jive and are all doctors.

Do you find what the performers did offensive?

It does not matter if I found it offensive, but I am proud that Hary Connick Jr. stood up for what he believed was right and was vocal about it. He did not "go with the flow" and let it happen. He spoke his mind and walked out! Kudos to him!

Why doesn't it matter that you find it offensive or not? What would you be proud of Harry for then--he was clearly offended? Wouldn't that mean that you were also by agreeing with him? Just wondering...

I didn't find it offensive b/c of what I took from their skit - a tribute (poor one at best, being white, bad singers, and bad dancers) band that acted just as such. If they dressed in blackface, say, making fun of black people, like Connick did himself, then I would not have watched it and felt the same way. But apparently he has grown since his own "mishap" and that was why he reacted so strongly. So I agree, good for him for sincerely acting on his beliefs.

I do not know how I personally feel about the skit. I am not paying it to much mind. I thought Connick did a fabulous job expressing his views in a tactical manner. Can you imagine if that was Kaye West as a guest judge?

Just curious...what are your African American friends saying about this skit? Did you talk about this with them to get their thoughts?

Yes, it was thoughtless, brainless, and dumb, whether they knew better or not, which I doubt. Why not just wear the wigs and the clothes---why did they need to paint their faces black, wear white gloves, and have the 'Michael' one come out in 'whiter/Casper' face?

I don't buy that just because they are in Australia that they couldn't possibly have known or heard about how tacky wearing that makeup would be, whether in 1989 when they first performed it or in 2009...we are on the same damn planet, so that cutesy ignorance crap doesn't fly with me.

My friends of every color think this was crude and tacky. I would hate to be a patient to any of those dingbat doctors.

You know I think you've changed my mind. Mark this day down! Quick! I saw the "whiteface' singer, but it didn't register in my head until you posted about it. I was too focused on watching the blackfaces. I think it was offensive, too. Had they all been in blackface, I could still see it as a crappy tribute band.

Curious, if they were all in blackface, would it still be offensive to you? Or could it have been viewed as a crappy tribute band?

Thinking about it and putting your opinions in my thought process, I agree that it was tacky and tasteless.

BTW: That was a sh!tty tribute to our late king of pop!

It could have been one person in black face for all I care...it would have still been IMO terribly offensive. There is no country or language on this planet that does not know about this history of degradation at the expense of African Americans...I don't care if it's through PBS, Roots, or a song, there is no way to hide from the fact that America has a rank and ugly racist past (and present) when it comes to demoralizing people of color.

The fact stands IMO that wearing blackface and shuffling around like a bunch of idiots is and was wrong.

If they came out wearing sombreros, stumbling around drunk and shooting pistols in the air to impersonate a Mexicali group...

Or, if they came out squinting their eyes, wearing thin mustaches and Asian clothing, bowing excessively...

Or, if they showed up wearing bras and underwear made out of taped together tampons with red paint on them...

All tasteless, all offensive, all wrong!

Well apparently this kind of "comedy" is no real surprise in Australia:

www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/TV/10/09/jackson.australia/index.html

Australian settlement in the 18th century was rooted in racism. Indigenous Australians were deemed not even to exist. Aborigines were dispossessed, often violently, and basic human freedoms, and rights to equal education, employment and welfare benefits denied.

It was not until 1967 -- almost 200 years after European settlement -- that the law was changed to officially count Aborigines in the census as human beings and no longer included amongst the flora and fauna!

DAMN! How could people sleep at night and stand themselves treating original Australians worse than grass? That's so shameful!
