Quote wannazach: Quote christy2005: Quote shirley 2: Quote wannazach: The man who found him hanging there has given his statement. He said the man was naked with duct tape wrapped around his hands and feet. What looked like a name tag was around his neck. The word Fed was on his chest. The body was very decomposed so the word had to have been put there very deep in his skin. This sounds like something that might have happened in the 60's not now. I would agree with you in any other state except Kentucky. Kentucky is a coal mining state and farming state and the people there a lot of them are still from the hills and aren't very educated, i don't live but about 100 miles from the state of Kentucky and have been there many many times and the people there aren't too nice when you meet them on the streets, you speak to them and they just grunt at you and go on. I am not saying all parts of Kentucky are like this but most are. I haven't posted on this board in a really long time. I always stop in and read what everyone else post but I always keep my opinions to myself until now. I found this post to be really insulting to us that are from Kentucky. I am from Kentucky and proud of it... I took this as an insult....Where do you get off saying we are uneducated? Yes we are a coal mining state and there are alot of farms here "BEAUTIFUL" farms I might add but that doesn't make us uneducated. I am sorry if you came to Ky and ran into some unfriendly people. I have to say I don't think I have ever spoken to anyone and they turn and grunt at me. I find our hills to be very beautiful. And yes there are people here that don't have alot but you will find that every where you go not just here in KY. My grandfather was a coal miner and I am PROUD of him for that. Our miners work their butts off to support their families. Miners here get paid a HECK of alot. Just because you are a miner doesn't mean you don't have an education. My uncle is the boss at a mines here. Coal mining is what keeps our state running. Without our miners we wouldn't have the electricity to be sitting her chatting with you people. Shirley,,,,,we have posted together here and on other sites and I always thought you were a farmer yourself. Does that mean that you are uneducated? I knew when I saw this thread something like this would be posted but I never imagined it to come from someone like you MR.... I am really hurt by your remark... Hi Christy, I know where you come from and it is just like where I am. It is beautiful and I would never leave it. We too are treated as being uneducated by the tourists and the transplants who move here. We are known for our moonshine and called hillbillys. I am a proud hillbilly. I lived in your state for 5 months and it was awesome. I made many good friends there who I still talk with. Like I posted above, sickos like this are everywhere now. It could have happened anywhere. I am sorry that you where hurt by this. I thought of you when I saw it. I think the vast majority of people know that this didn't happen there because it was in that state. This is a problem everywhere in our country now. Luv ya! I co-sign this Christy. I had an uncle who lived in Kentucky and I spent about 5 summers there with him. Loved it, beautiful country and beautiful people. I spent most of my time riding horses on that unbelievable green grass you guys have there! |

You know the media has insulted our state sooo much and the reason why is because of the remarks like the one above that are being made toward us. We have a beautiful state and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else...When we go on vacation I miss Kentucky and when I see that bluegrass sign I LOVE IT.... I am sooo happy to call KY my home and I always will.. |

I have been through Harlan. It is about an hour from where I live. My mother lives close to Harlan. Like 30 minutes or so from it. Harlan is one of the counties that get alot of media attention around here. I know there are alot of poor people in that area but that doesn't mean they are uneducated. With the economy the way it is today there are HIGHLY educated people doing without. Shirley I do forgive you |

Personally, I think movies lend a hand into the stereotypes around the world about certain cities and states. |

Quote KC11: Personally, I think movies lend a hand into the stereotypes around the world about certain cities and states. One of my favorite movies is October Sky. It's a movie that takes place in a mining town. Since I haven't been to Kentucky or West Virginia or any other mining states at all. I can see why some would form a general opinion about miners and mining towns. You're right, people shouldn't generalize. It's great to know that my initial speculations are wrong. You think that is bad, the movie "Deliverance" was filmed about 10 miles from my house. It was across the line in GA. But that was some beautiful scenary don't you think? |

They had an article in their paper in GA a couple years ago about him. He is still playing a mean banjo. |

Oh, I love October Sky- it is one of my favorite 'true story' movies-mining is good honest work- nothing to turn ones nose up at-- I loved Coal Miners Daughter too - Loretta Lynns Father worked so hard to care for his family - a good man he was- |

The river rafting and scenery that I knew was the main reason I watched it. But only one time was enough. |
