1952-Sen Richard Nixon facing calls to withdraw as Dwight D. Eisenhowers running mate, went on telvision to defend himself against allegations of improper campaign fundraising. The address which came to be known as the Checkers speech because of Nixon's on air reference to a dog given to his family as a gift, proved highly successful in rallying public support for keeping Nixon on th GOP ticket.

1957-nine black students who had entered Little Rock Central High School in AR were forced to withdraw because of a white mob outside.

2001-13 coal miners were killed in explosions at the Blue Creek Mine No 5 in Brookwood AL.

2008-a 22 year old gunman opened fire at his trade school in Kauhajoki, Finland, killing 10 people before fatally shooting himself.

I loved that song. My mom was in her late fifties and had never listened to anything but country. One day she walked through the house and her my niece and I listening to it. She walked in the room and said she loved it and who sang it. That shocked us big time. This woman had never got past Conway, Loretta and George Jones and here she loved a Cher song. Way cool...

rotflmbo...you liked the light skinned one...girl, you know both of them looked the same to me with those braids flinging around...after awhile I would just watch them and think "they don't have enough stank in their giddy-up to be singing that deep."

I remember seeing the VH1 Behind the Music episode years ago. It was so sad what happened to your boy "the light skinned one"--Rob Pilatus, died of an overdose in 1998. Fab and Rob tried to release an album with their own voices but it fell flatter than a pancake.

edited--OH, almost forgot...the names of the real singers were Charles Shaw and Brad Howell.
