Quote Eppy: Quote wannazach: I know, and the worst thing I witnessed as a little kid was that the chicken would run around without his head for awhile. I will never get that image out of my mind. Quote gommie: Quote wannazach: Quote gommie: Quote wannazach: Quote gommie: All this talk about chickens- I have been cooking chickens in my crock pot for two days now- while I was boning them I kept coming across the 'wish bone' anyone remember that- or was it just something my folks did? When we had fried chicken everyone wanted the 'wish bone' - as I recall it required two people who each took an end- the trick was to pull on your end and the one who got the shorter piece got good luck or bad, don't remember and had to wash dishes or something like that- The way we did it Gommie the short one was the bad luck one. After a few years we gave up trying cause my big brother always took it away from us. Then we started just hanging them across the curtain rod in grandmas kitchen out of sight. Got quite a collection till she took the curtains down to wash them. Ok, the short one was the bad luck side- was your collection pretty much all the same size? No not the same size but thank God they finally started buying them instead of the old back yard grab you one and cook it up. That bothered me really bad. It didn't taste as good when it was someone you knew on your plate. I know what you mean- we lived next door to a chicken arbor- (a restaurant that served fried chicken dinners)- we supplied them with their chickens- we had to (omg) wring their little necks-one chased me once, scarred me for life I swear- then we had to put them in boiling hot water and pick out all the feathers-that smell has stayed with me all my life-- its just rotten-- I wish granny would have wrung their poor little necks. It was the old chopping block for her. I would run as fast as I could to get away or hide in the house with all the blinds pulled. That smell is still with me to. Makes me sick to think of it. Hell, Im ready for another beer!!! I had to wring the neck one time- and that is the chicken who, at the time, I thought was chasing me- I was about 7 and didn't know it was normal for them to do that- I thought the chicken hated me and I didn't blame it- that too is an image I will never forget-- |
