Does anyone know if you can darken stained wood cabniets without stripping them and restaining? I have not only my kitchen cabniets that I want darker but also builtins in my den. In our old house we stripped and restained our kitchen and I don't want to go thru that again if I can keep from it. Thanks for your help! |

Maybe....try a spot that is hidden and try it. See what happens. Worst case scenario is that you have to strip and stain... |

Murphys oil works good and so does Old English but those are generally used for cleaning. |

I believe what you need for that type of wood is tung oil...that is what they told me years ago when I was trying to clean up an old wooden cabinet of my grandmas...requires a lot of elbow grease, but it will work to darken some types of wood. Good luck, that can involve a lot of work to change the color, especially if you have to strip off the old, I do not enjoy that part of it.... |

I always use tung oil on my wood. Be sure to start out slow...with gentle strokes and then gradually quicken your pace, taking deeper and longer strokes. That has always worked best for me. |

Are your minds in the gutter or what?! |

Quote akwood: Are your minds in the gutter or what?! Using that will darken the wood or just condition it? my mind tends to always be in the gutter. tung oil will condition, not darken. As far as I know you have to use stain if you want to darken. But I don't know if you want to use oil straight away and then follow up with stain....you might want to check on that. |

You guys, you take a question about wood and turn it in to something naughty and funny!! And I started it with my suggestion of tung oil and the fun that could come out of it went right over my head!! You are all just too cool.....I have found that it depends on the wood you use the tung oil on, some softer ones seem to soak it up a lot more and it will at times turn it darker but to do a good job that will last, you would probably have to use stain as Plot says.. |
