Rei1, reference your post #85 wondering about supplemental insurance. No, supplemental insurance is available to seniors who already have Medicare to pick up the extra expenses Medicare doesn't cover. The basic amount runs around $200.00 per month - that's in addition to the Medicare Ins Premium and another prescription premium (with potentially pretty large share of cost). One can also buy nursing care or catastrophic insurance as another level of coverage. A senior could easily pay 600, 700 or 800 dollars a month in premiums on total coverages. It's good to have tho.

Quote Peppermint Patty: No, the civil war had to do with the manufacturing of good, taxation on those goods and the ability to sell the raw materials to whoever they wanted. States rights.

Will not repeat this with you. Had enough.

the south dropped out of the union b/c they depended upon slavery to produce those goods (cotton etc -ring a bell?) - when the west started developing it could not be agreed upon as to which was a slave state or non slave..not to mention the movements against slavery. w/out slavery the south would lose alot of money b/c they were not industrialized like the north was. the north was not dependent upon slaves and some people started developing morals. Lincoln did not want the union dismantled. the Civil War began. the south felt their civil rights were being infringed upon..the so called civil right of owning slaves so they could make money.

There was an interesting point that was raised that the SC Republican GOP find it too painful to accept that the President is black or that there was even a possibility to elect a black even happened. Seemingly, this state is too entrenched in racial politics, and there were people in cafes saying that Wilson was right to say "you lie" but he showed bad manners...

How do you like that folks? Well-mannered racism...LOL...these people are sick in the head.

(edited too many times for misspellings...sorry, just crawled out of my bunker after Barack's speech)

Don't forget SC also has Governor Sanford. Everyone has asked him to resign but he won't do it. Now that is a story and a half there. If you have not heard about this man google it. It is good for laughs. And, absolutely racism is alive and well in the south. Anyone who says other wise can on down and I can show you 9 out of 10 people everywhere we go who don't like our president because of his color and color "only". I doubt they have even heard a word he speaks. He is black and that is all they need to know. I work with the public and rarely does a day go by that someone does not make a racist remark about Obama. At least half of them use the N word also. Makes me want to grab them and shake the sh!t out of them and try to shake in some intelligence. Probably wouldn't be worth my trouble though. You can't fix stupid...

i know it's alive and well b/c i see it too and it makes me sick. i honestly feel he's being picked on more than any other president b/c of it. i have not seen a dem or republican president picked on this much. i feel really disgusted b/c of it. if you don't like an idea then fine..say so. don't call him names. i didn't even start to call bush a moron until after the fact. after i saw enough bad ideas blaze through. look at some of the pictures and very disrespectful portrayals of him seen. and i don't care what anyone says..the rebel flag should only be in a museum to remind us of how we were ignorant. it makes me sick to see it on trucks, cars - displayed on the windows of homes. that flag is linked directly to racism. that's all i see when i see it...hate.

The confederate flag (rebel flag) has nothing to do with racism. It is the proud heritage of the south. The civil war was not fought over slavery. It was fought over commerce and taxes. Lincoln knew that the war was being lost by the union and that the nation would never survive if split apart. He added the issue of slavery to the war to bring it to a close. In fact, many union commanders and leaders owned slaves, along with many other northerners.

Again the rebel flag was NOT a symbol of slavery. It was a symbol of states rights. Read the original history of our country....not the slanted history books that our children are learning from today.

After the election of Abraham Lincoln who ran on a anti-slavery platform, there was an immediate reaction to the election from the Deep South.
On December 20, 1860, South Carolina seceded from the United States. On the national level, efforts were made to find a compromise that would keep the other southern states in the Union. John J. Crittenden of Kentucky introduced a
compromise plan that would permanently protect slavery in the states in which it already existed and permit slavery in the territories south of the 36° 30′ line established by the Missouri Compromise. Republican leaders agreed with the first part of the proposal, and Congress adopted it. Had the proposal gone to the states for ratification, there is a great likelihood that the Thirteenth Amendment would have guaranteed slavery rather than abolish it. But Lincoln
opposed the extension of slavery into the territories.
That part of the plan was defeated, resulting in the
secession of six other southern states.

So I can see why it would be a hardship for somone with little means to afford it. It sounds like a great plan..maybe that will be addressed soon and relieve you of the high cost. Maybe it can be put on a sliding scale type of payment..depending on a person's income.

Thanks for addressing that with me...I had no idea of the cost.

Medical supplamental insurance is expensive. I know many people who cannot afford all of their meds and really do have to choose. Thankfully we have pharm companies that give out samples and the doctors give them samples so they can still get their meds.

Quote Peppermint Patty:
Quote raving: By around 1862 or so, the South seceeded from the Union, which started the Civil War. At that time, slavery was the center issue of all of this, if not one of the biggest issues. Black people were treated as nothing more than property. They were by law not allowed to read, write, or even marry. If the South were to win the Civil War, black people were to remain slaves for years, if not decades to come.
you are saying PP that this is false? and that this is the slanted view point of history books in todays schools???...wonder how they got it so wrong....all those dumb historians!

Oh please........the south succeeded because the government was taxing them unfairly and because of trade issues. Slavery had nothing to do with it until the north was losing. There were slaves in the north too.

I agree with pp- it had to do with tarriff issues(the same as taxes) on foreign trade of agricultural goods which were the main products of the south-slavery had been a bone of contention since 1776 when we declared independence from england-so yes slavery was always a divisive issue from the birth of the country- but it was the agricultural south versus the industrial north that was the tipping point for the beginning of the civil war-This is not how teachers in government schools have treated this issue- if you could take the time to read various historians accounts of the people involved in these events you will find that history being taught to our children is a good deal different then reality(as is the case with so many other historical "facts" )
