Quote Longhornsfan79: I feel some are missing the point here. Its not that the president should not make a broadcast to schools. Thats great! Although I disagree with Obama on just about everything, I think he can serve as an inspiration to children. Thats not why many are uneasy about the speech. The reason many are uneasy about the speech is the lesson plans and videos that go along with the speech. The question was something to the effect of "How can I help the PRESIDENT" Should it not have read "How can I help my COUNTRY?" And in the Demi/Ashton video they pledge to serve the PRESIDENT. Should they not have pledged to serve their COUNTRY? The focus seems to be on Obama not the country. Why? In past presisential adresses to students the focus has been on service to ones country not service to ones president. There is a big difference there if you ask me.

Missing the point? Oh - - I got it now - - The PRESIDENT has nothing to the with our COUNTRY - - forgot to differentiate. And, by the way, the word "serve" the President was not in his speech.

Oh, and by the way - - if we ever come close to another disaster similar to 911, and the PRESIDENT decides to address it on TELEVISION - - please do not let your children listen to it!!!

It might indoctrinate them!

Please go back and read. I never said the word serve was in the presidents speech. It is, however, in the video that was supposed to play after the presidents speech starring Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. Please dont put words in my mouth.

Let me ask this, why was there not this great push to support President Bush? I remember plenty of people saying they did not support President Bush but still loved and wanted to serve their country. To me thats fine and your right as an American. But why is it now that just because Obama is president, we have to fall in line and support him? Can we who do not support Obamas policies still love our country? I do not see why not, it was "cool" in the Bush years....

My bad -please excuse my inference, I was really looking at your sentence, "In past presisential adresses to students the focus has been on service to ones country not service to ones president. There is a big difference there if you ask me."

I thought they were going to eliminate the video at the end of the speech anyway.

At any rate, it should all be over and done by the end of the day and then we can all go back to putting aside the real problems in the country now and start worrying about why Michelle Obama wore shorts on Air Force One.

I saw nothing wrong in the speech. Might be about time someone the students can look up to tells them there are things expected from them. No propaganda involved if that's what so many were concerned about.

Bush was a liar. Mushroom cloud, smoking gun, etc. It is difficult to support someone who lies to you. President Obama has always seemed very down to earth. He has a direction in mind for the country that involves hope, change, and working together. We lost so many young soldiers, so many more were injured - for what? President Bush was wrong to go into Iraq and we are still paying the price for it. That is why it was and is not cool to support him. We should give our new President a chance- with any luck he may be able to repair the damage the last administration caused.
I hate to take sides but the Republicans seem to count on lies and distortion to get their point across. Obama seems, so far, to really care about people and our country. I only hope he continues to deliver what he promised during the campaign.
I think we should give him some time and some credit. He is dealing with a terrible mess that was not of his own making.

It was a lot of hoopla for no reason whatsoever!

It's a positive message that children NEED to see about staying and school and striving to be the best that you can be...very admirable, in my very humble opinion.

p.s.There were absolutely no requests from parents that their child/children NOT be exposed to the video in our district.

I was going to ask you when I saw your post in another thread about your first day back at school.

Seems here in Florida it was really bad - - but the kids were being interviewed after watching it and some of them probably put some of the parents to shame, saying they enjoyed it, gained much from it and thought the parents/adults were overreacting.

Did you hear any comments from the kids at your school after watching it?

I think the media is to blame for most of the controversy. They give the crazies air time because they need to fill up the 24 news programs. Most people understand that the President was giving an inspirational speech. I just hope the students listen. They are our future, we can only hope that they can cut through all the media BS and listen to the true message. These students are the people that will be running our country when we are old.

I am very proud to say that not one person where I lived did the whole boycott and protest thing. The kids went to school and they watched the speech and the ones interviewed enjoyed it. Laura Bush said yesterday that it was a great speech and Obama "needed" to make it. See even a Bush approves! I watched the networks in a 150 mile radius and everyone said that it went fine. They interviewed tons of kids who like us where "wth". I hope the kids went home and broke it down and explained it to their ridiculous parents. Maybe they can get through to them. No one else can.

LMAO!! Yes! About those shorts! It's awful that Michelle Obama showed her..... Ummm Knees?..
Why the hell is everyone up in arms because the first lady was wearing a pair of shorts at the Grand Canyon, when it was over 100 degrees and they were on vacation?

She wasn't wearing Daisy Dukes for God sake! I thought she looked very nice, and also comfortable for that kind of temperature.
Personally I think he should have also been in shorts.. It was HOT at that time and they were on vacation.

Sheeeeesh! Get a grip all of you dress critics!

Well unfortunately, this backwards behind state I live in (Alabama), left it up to the different school districts.

When I picked up my 5th grader today I asked him how was the speech. He didn't have a clue what I was talking about. As soon as I got to the car I called the office and asked the question why the students didn't see the speech. She informed me that the principal would only let the students who were actually in social studies or civics at the time of the speech was allowed to see the speech. What a bunch of mess.

I didn't argue with her but proceeded to find the sppech on CNN and MADE him look at it, report back to me the important points and his overall thoughts about.

Why people made such an uproar about an 18 minute is beyond me. We should all continue to be concerned about the other 6 1/2 hours during the day of school work and what the so called teachers are teaching!!

Republicans want to throw that mess about the original lesson plan and one of the question the president asked was to write a letter to him stating what they could do to help him. CNN played a tape of George H.W. Bush asking the exact same question!! So what's the problem?

This country is so politically and racially divided it's a shame. To much time is wasted on hate and not enough on solutions.
