Quote Plot-Twister: First let me start by saying there is not an actual Pledge to the President similar to the Pledge of Alligience.

If you don't want your kids to see celebrity endorsements, then don't let them watch commercials or any sort of billboard adverts. I think what the campaign was trying to invoke was community....similar to "win one for the gipper"

anyway....my brother (who is a teacher) has a very different viewpoint on this subject. He says that the parents who are all up in arms and discussing it are the parents who are generally raising their kids well. They tell their children all of the things that the President is planning on telling them in his speech. But many MANY children do not hear this message once let alone on a continuous basis. My brother says that the president is doing this because it has to be done. Children have to learn to believe in themselves because many parents don't do that job.

I thought that was an interesting viewpoint.

I agree with your brothers take on the speech.

And unfortunately there are some parents that don't encourage. I did agree with what Obama said in the speech and I can't imagine anyone thinking it was a bad message.

What is that down there? *gulp* Is that common ground? Be careful...I don't know how solid it is lol

I personally LOVE Pres. Obama! I admire what he is trying to do, despite all the opposition he is getting from the RIGHT. Pres. Obama has improved the way the world see Us (USA)

Pres. Obama has done more good than our former pres. He is a
'Statesman', he is kind, gentle, a fantastic father & a hell of a husband to our beautiful first lady: Michelle.

All Pres. Obama wants is 'World Peace' Health care for all, lower taxes for most of us and a better place to raise our children.

I used to watch Fox news, but I stated to question their truthfulness...Then I started looking for answers...the truth. I was on the MSNBC channel for a while ( which I love: Keith Oberman, Racel Madow, Ed Shultz & Chris Mathews) but I find CNN has the best & he most honest news out there. Then I go to 'politifact.com to check what most people are saying is true or not.

Let the Pres. of or country speak to the children....Bush read a book while the Trade Center was falling......All presidents speak out about staying in school. The only thing that is different now is: Obama is black. JMO

What the hell are the gonna do when the first Hispanic, Asian or NATIVE American becomes P.O.T.U.S.

Get over it, 'they' reacted the same way about Tiger Woods and now they can not get enough of him. Give Pres. Obama a chance to make real CHANGE. Most of the people against Obama are fighting against their own well being.

Quote sandi314: I'm really not into politics so I may be wrong about this. I partially heard Obama was having a broadcast to kids and if you wanted your kid to have no part in it don't send them to school that day. I don't know what it's about, but I agree with a man that called in and said,DID HE FORGET WHAT COUNTRY WE'RE IN? Now the president is specifically broadcasting to kids in school. Another caller said as soon as he was elected he changed. Alot of people that supported him do not anymore. In my opinion, he will not be re-elected. I don't care if it was to Say hi, it didn't belong in the school room.

sandi314 you dont need to worry, i think i read on cnsn.com witch i get emaild that oboma said that hes comfortable with being a one term president and he will be ok at the end of his fore year term with what ever work he was able to get done. it wasn't worded that way, but im close. it sounds like to me that oboma found out that he cant handle being president of the united states.
to make things worse, if your a senior citizen, you wont be getting your cost of living increase as oboma froze it up to 20/12 so he really created a huge mess when he over spent all those trillions in stimulus packages.

LOL! Pres. Obama will NOT be a 1 term pres. I guess you forgot all the good the man has in 8 months than Bush has done in 8 years. GMAFB!

Although we want to stress the need for learning to our children and although we ourselves were once children — we who are now adults fail to learn ourselves that children are NOT stupid! Most of us aim to teach our children to "be nice", treat others with respect, don't kill, don't take guns to school, don't join gangs. Yet the children see us adults being anything but nice, treating and talking to others with anything but respect, killing other citizens simply because we disagree with them, joining organizations that threaten the safety of our communities as well as our nation. We will surely have to endure much suffering because of these and other senseless actions by ridiculous right wingers. Much pain will be a result in the shameless way we treat our children and the poor example we set for them. These examples are far worse than a speech encouraging children to stay in school. Right wingers clearly need to follow the signs and "Put America First". Save the children — they are our future.

Great post! I am so relieved to have a president who wants to get things done. He has an agenda and want to make accomplishments. No matter how hard people try and deny that racism is a factor I for one know that it is not only a factor but a HUGE factor. I work with the public everyday and I hear the racist comments as being what they don't like about him. I don't think they even know one single thing he has or is trying to do. They don't care because he is black and that is all they need to know. It makes me very angry, sickens me and most of all it shames me to hear this where I live and in the year 2009. But I am happy to say that my whole state does not feel that way. We turned this red state blue this year! Yeah!!! And the majority of voters did not feel racist because he had no problem winning the election. If I could accomplish one thing in my life I would like to be able to stop racism. I know I will never live long enough to see that.

Another great post! This is what really needs to be thought about. The parents are doing way more harm to their kids than any speech would. I would have hated to have had parents so radical that they would act the way some are now. Thank God these ridiculous actions where not around when I was a child.

Thanks Wannazach: Children can see that this is more than about a motivating message. There is nothing new about presidents attempting to motivate students. What's new is that THIS President is trying to do it. Children can see that this is more about an attack on Obama and his administration than anything else and the idiotic and irrational desire of some to see the President fail. It's rather funny because the scheme to knitpick this speech and draw senseless conclusions will backfire big time. A presidential address to students urging them to remain in school, though good and well intended would otherwise go down as unmemorable to many students because even by the afternoon, many students wouldn't be able to highlight anything that was actually said other than Obama was the one who gave the speech. But now, thanks to all the ridiculous hoopla both children and adults are curious and everyone will remember exactly what was said and the ridiculous furor over it. I'm sure the right wing didn't plan on this happening!

Wondering why those who oppose Obama making this speech never had a problem with the 2002 provision in the No Child Left Behind Act put out by the Bush Administration that all data on students 15 years of age and older had to be turned over to the millitary. NOW that's fascism!!!!

That is the basic premise of my point. No one will remember anything. But perhaps now they will because the parents are making such a big fuss about it. Treat it like any other assembly, the kids are going to be passing notes and flirting (if they are old enough) doodling, or sleeping. And yes, your son has the smart arse gene (I have it too) and I think that is awesome. At least he is participating in the subject at hand. I would be interested to hear his take on the speech.

But give the president the respect he deserves. If we teach our kids that he shouldn't be listened to because we don't like him that teaches them to be rude, obnoxious and doesn't lend to great career growth. Most everyone knows I couldn't stand Bush, but I still would have let my kids listen to him (in fact I did every address he made).

In the grand scheme of things, this is silly. It diverts our attention from the greater issues.

Exactly!! The presidents and others have always talked to school children this is no different! Luckily nothing will ever be as bad(I hope) as in 86(I think) watching The space shuttle challenger(with the teacher on board) exploding right after take off! I think(hope) our kids are smart enough to think for themselves!! and will be just fine!!

And - - does anybody remember studying American History in school? I STILL do. Do you remember studying the presidents, their speeches, etc. Remember the Gettysburg Address by President Lincoln? I, and many people, remember memorizing it for a class project.

I also remember President Kennedy's inaguration speech - - "Ask not what your country can do for you, but rather what you can do for your country"?

I guess if he had said " . . . "but rather what you can do for your president", everyone would have wanted him impeached immediately?

We were to study about our past presidents and "learn" how most of them contributed to our country, but now we don't want our children to listen to our PRESENT president.

Why don't some of these parents just say to their kids - - Hey kids - - "we don't like this president, so therefore you may not listen to what he has to say." Isn't that pretty much what some of them are actually projecting?

I think we all know the who, where and what - - about how this all started - - and it will soon be over. Yes, the kids may forget the speech very soon, but I doubt they will forget the uproar their parents made about it....now that is just a wonderful learning for their children, right? NOT!

I feel some are missing the point here. Its not that the president should not make a broadcast to schools. Thats great! Although I disagree with Obama on just about everything, I think he can serve as an inspiration to children. Thats not why many are uneasy about the speech. The reason many are uneasy about the speech is the lesson plans and videos that go along with the speech. The question was something to the effect of "How can I help the PRESIDENT" Should it not have read "How can I help my COUNTRY?" And in the Demi/Ashton video they pledge to serve the PRESIDENT. Should they not have pledged to serve their COUNTRY? The focus seems to be on Obama not the country. Why? In past presisential adresses to students the focus has been on service to ones country not service to ones president. There is a big difference there if you ask me.
