Quote cats meow: i have a question?? you have a great job, great benefits, a wonderful family, a nice house, living with in your means, things change where you work and you are laid off, your income is drastically reduced, your company gives you a nice severance pkg when you leave, you have a hard time finding a job, and i am not saying a $10/hr job, you still have all the expenses and things are beginning to get tight, what happens then? please tell me so i can pass that along to 3 very good friends, incidently they are all over 50, none of them have health insurance, do you have any advice?

I'm a little confused by this...you started this thread, don't you have an opinion? Not trying to be offensive, but I just find it odd that you would pose a question and not state an opinion in a thread that you started by posting a vague opinion. Do you actually have a viewpoint on the subject or are you looking for others to give you one? Or perhaps it's just all about getting out a big giant spoon and stiring up a great big old pot?
I personally, would never open a thread as controversial as this without having an opinion or facts to back it up. Not trying to start anything...was just curious because I really have a big problem with trouble makers!

Cats i've been kind of wondering the same thing lately. that's why i'm not debating as much. you are very nice - a sweet person so please don't get me wrong. but i've seen lots of threads started up w/out a strong stance from you at times so i do get confused as to what your opinion is. the reason i don't jump in anymore is b/c i think most people know where i stand and i feel like some of the same things keep getting brought up.

In my state you can get medical if you are low income or out of work(with kids) It's calles rite care(this is free depending on how much $ you make) and rite share(this one you pay for according to your pay) but they both include doc visits, and medication etc. But you can only see certain doc. on the list. I qualify but my boys have a specialist who isn't on the list and to continue going to him I'd have to pay the full price out of pocket. Right now I have the family plan for $80 every other week as well as $5for dental every ohter week. Yes I have copays but for teh service I get and monthly amount I pay I think it's worth it!!JMO!!
I saw on the news they want to tax companies and people who get med ins. through there work, If they tax my check anymore,I'll need another job!

cool! i'm with you cats, i am in favor of this too. i have great insurance through my company but the stories of middle class families (anyone really) getting thrown under the bus when a child gets sick or themselves..breaks my heart. a medical situation can change everything. also medical issues can cause one to lose their job and in that case lose coverage too. and insurance is expensive and a trip to emergency room is even more so. there's got to be something to bridge the gap from those eligiable for medicad and insurance itself.

I would be in favor of this as well, but I do have the big fear that some people will try to get unnessecary things done b/c they can. I guess I mean for lack of a better term those who get things like nose & boob jobs for no other reason than vanity and that I don't want to pay for. I wouldn't mind if someone was in an accident to restore them as best as can be done but to go and get something done just because you can is BS and if we go to gov't care who is to insure that those abuses of the system don't occur.

it is my understanding most insurances will not cover cosmetic procedures, some teachers in this state, NY, do have riders in their coverage that at one time did cover these procedures, that is not available anymore, thank goodness, we regular folk were paying for all that stuff, now we have an opportunity to help others with real health problems

editing to say, i was listening to ed schultz, the other day, they were broadcasting his visit here at UB, anyway, he said something that really hit home

when you are very ill, many of you will have 2 choices
DEATH or FINANCIAL RUIN
he is on the radio opposite rush

good news from crooks and liars

Americans overwhelmingly support substantial changes to the health care system and are strongly behind one of the most contentious proposals Congress is considering, a government-run insurance plan to compete with private insurers, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

The poll found that most Americans would be willing to pay higher taxes so everyone could have health insurance and that they said the government could do a better job of holding down health-care costs than the private sector.

proud to say i am one of them
Quote cats meow:
Quote alwaysEJ:
Quote cats meow: the HMO'S dictate what a doctor can and cannot do, there are meds a doc cannot prescribe because a patient isn't old enough for it to be covered, are you shi!!ing, and i speak from experience, i wasn't old enough to be able to take certain arthritis meds, i was lucky one doc gave me a ton of samples, and one drug i still have to wait 2 more yrs to get
maybe if the HMO"S had some competition,(gov't), the premiums would go down, and who knows the care might be better, wouldn't that be nice

it is

and bottom line, if you call yourself a christian, you should be willing to do your part for those less fortunate, if you are not, you are not doing what god expects
There is a big difference in me helping someone out & the government forcing me to turn over my money so they can spend it as they please. The government is not doing the Lord's work...they are wasting the money of tax payers who work hard for what they earn.

Oh, & a competition between the government & HMOs sounds like the seventh circle of hell to me.[/quote

it is semantics, can't call yourself a christian when the issue suits you, if we all pay a little more in taxes, we help our fellow americans
Did you hear about the case here in NY where IDK how many state workers where arrested for collecting unemployment while working?? I want to help out those less fortunate, but not those less honest!!! Unfortunately, there is no way to tell the difference in this economy...

The USA has had gov sponsored health care for years - the VA health care system. I recommend every one who is on favor of gov sponsored health care research how great the VA is doing under the gov, and all the law suits involved. I would feel different, maybe, if the gov had proven it is capable of providing us viable health coverage with adaquate doctors and facilities, but it has consistently proven the opposite.

I agree something's got to give, but what the gov wants to give me, I don't want. I would rather go without than go into the system the VA's have, when I can choose the system we already have - which isn't much better, but it is still better. Until the gov at least parallels the system it already sponsors with what us civilians have, I cannot support this.
I could find it in me to support the gov guidance and recommendations to the insurance companies, but I do not want the gov to have mojority control. History of our own vets tells me this is a bad idea.

I support this too, and just a quick reply to post #33 on this page, the type of health care in single payer or unioversal health care is not like what the millitary provides through the VA. It is what congress and the senate recieve, and tax payer pay for and it's GREAT!!! You should check out what they get!

Most Americans do support a government universal coverage program for all citizens, unfortunatly Obama does not! What Obama supports is a crony corporate system run by the insurance and pharmacutical companies that would leave most people without adequate coverage, and the poorest with the least coverage. Obama is nothing more then a corporate democrat, who lied in order to get elected.

I'm going to try and make this short and sweet.

I'm a subcontractor (hairstylist) my husband is also a subcontractor (new construction) and neither one of us has health insurance. I'm a diabetic. The other day i was at work when the phone rang. I picked it up. It was a man named Schmeggaschmeg (thats what i'm going to call him) he asked for the owners of the salon i said i'm sorry they are busy can i help you.....he replied by asking me if he could ask me a few questions about my health insurance and if he could quote me a price from his company....i said, well i dont have any but i'll answer a few questions and find out about yours....he proceeded with his questions, my age, smoker?, (i dont smoke cigs), if i have any serious deceases such as cancer, diabetes etc....i answered yes i have diabetes....he said.....oh thank you for your time, and hung up.

I cant tell you how aweful that made me feel. I want something, anything. I read some of the comments here and someone said they have an HMO that pays everything, their premiums are low but the Doctors are questionable. I'd be THRILLED knowing i had at least that.
