Violence begets violence.

I live in Canada. Much less was not raised to fight violence with violence.

If I have to live in fear than why live.

I respect all of your opinions.

This is mine.

Quote KeepingItReal: Why do you need a gun.... and if you do are you really safe

Hopefully you are never the victim of even an attempted crime. If you were, you would know the answer to your question.
Someone had tried to break into my home when I lived with my parents (I was in high school) twice when I was there alone, and a day never goes by that I wish I would have been prepared better. Thankfully, neighbors heard the house alarm go off. No, thankfully beighbors were home. My parents had guns, but I actually did not know where. I believe I was old enough to have been told.

Side note story related:
Did anyone ever read that story of the 7 or 11 (I forgot) year old girl who was home alone a couple of months ago?

She was taught, correctly, gun safety and usage. Two burglars broke into her home while she was upstairs. She got the gun, loaded it, and waited upstairs in the sniper position. Once they got all the way in the door way, she let loose (smart girl under pressure...once in the doorway, you cannot be charged). One round instantly killed the first guy, the second round I believe eventually killed the second.
It was later found these two guys had just molested and attempted to murder other people, after robbing them. I don't know if this chld later needed therapy, but she was so knowledgeable and collected afterwards for someone so young. It never reported how she was mentally after the incident.
So, if taught correctly, and based on the person's child, it can be useful and advantageous. But, it is no trivial matter. One can never be too careful about guns, for adults or children.

Thought I'd give a look for the story since it sounded interesting... the site I found posted it as an 'Urban Legend'. Do you happen to know where I can find the original article?

No, but I'll look. I saw it on the news myself, unless I missed where they were talking about legends. I'll try and look it up on the news channel I saw it on (Fox, if you also want to try).

Hmm, I've found reports of a few stories that are similar but no exact copies. Apparently the story of the 11 year old girl has been floating around for sometime with earliest incarnations appearing as far back as April of 2006. However there are some other kids on the Fox site with an equally good head on their shoulders...

-In February, 2002, the South Bend, Indiana Tribune reported the story of an 11-year-old boy who shot and killed a man holding a box cutter to his grandmother's neck. Trained to use a firearm, the boy killed the assailant in one shot, even though the man was using his grandmother as a shield.

--In May, 2001 in Louisianna, a 12-year-old girl shot and killed her mother's abusive ex-boyfriend after he broke into their home and began choking her mother. The story appeared in the New Orleans Advocate.

--In January, 2001, in Angie, Louisianna, a 13 year-old boy stopped for burglars from entering his home by firing the family's shotgun, wounding one robber and scaring off the other three. The four men were planning on attacking the boy's mother--an 85-pound terminal cancer patient--in order to steal her pain medication.

Hey thanks for those. I live in Louisiana & hadn't heard about either of those stories, granted it's been several years since the incidents happened. Honestly, many young people in this state are familiar with & know how to properly use a gun better than many adults in states where there is little hunting & strict gun laws.

Well to me its not about violence or fear its about being prepared! Having a fire extinguisher protects you from fires, having a emergency earthquake kit protects you if theirs an earthquake. I live in fear of nothing or nobody because I am prepared!! I rather fight violence with violence then die trying to make a point !

Guns don't kill people it is an object, but stupid uneducated people kill other people. You really don't hear that often of people getting murder by people who legally obtain guns. At least were im from I don't hear about it. Were im from its these little punk teenagers that are out killing each other it is very sad. What ever happend to a good ol fashion fist fight I mean neither is right but at least nobody dies. These kids are so quick to pull a gun out and shoot people it is scary! And its like for what? They don't get no recognition on the news or anything because they are running stories on the lost dog in the nice neighborhood. If it wasn't for word of and the news paper we would be completely oblivious of what's going on in the streets.

So do cars, improperly cooked food, fireworks... Education is key. Education leads to prevention and preparedness, whether we are talking about guns, taking a karate class to better prepare yourself. or carrying mace or pepper spray. Some things are just more effective.

guns do not kill!!! it is the person behind the triggar that does the killing..
like i said before , i am a hunter, i have guns.
also thought i should mention that my brother-n- law was shot to death 8 years ago. the gun did not go on trail, and the gun is not sitting behinfd prison bars, like the shooter is.

also, if the recession gets worse , and everyone is straving, you will be looking for someone with the knowledge of hunting, and the skill of shooting a gun...
