I was just wondering if anyone else has guns in their home on this board? I love guns I have been shooting since I can remember and know I own and carry a concealed weapon and some of my friends tell me how dangerous it is to have a gun in the house with kids. But my kids can't get to my gun I usually have it with me if im gone and locked up if im home. I don't see what the big deal is if you are responsible why can't people carry guns?

i have some..... i do not carry one unless i am hunting. they are always locked up in gun safe.my children safety comes first.i also was raised to respect the gun , and know the power that it holds. and so do my boys they are 10, and 11 . they know how to use one, they are hunters. but they also know that they are not allowed to play with the gun..
they are never, never left alone with a gun....

Guns are a serious subject for me. I personally don't have one in my house, and don't care if anyone else has them in their house. However, when I meet a first a family of my kids friend, I ask if there are guns in the house. I want to know where they are kept and if they are locked away. Many parents I talk to say the kids don't know where the guns are...I say that is sooo not true. Kids know everything in that house. As long as the gun is locked I don't have a problem.

Serious barely scrapes the surface of how I feel about guns, so I am shocked to say it never occured to me to ask my son's friends' parents if they have guns (he is starting play dates this year). What a great idea, glad I opened up this thread.

I am all for guns. I do feel, however, that to own (not just to carry) a course should have to be taken and passed. While I may be all for gun rights, I still feel there are some people (some even I know) who should not be using a gun.

Yeah, I'm from Texas and of course all the Rednecks feel that Obama will take their guns away. Touchy subject and so there is a run on all types of ammunition since Obama has taken office, it has gotten so bad that stores are limiting the ammo to one box per customer.

Hey watch it now! My family is that bunch of read necks!
While I may think that would be what Obama wants to do, I don't forsee it happening with this term.
-I'm from Texas, too, but don't own one yet.

I think drastic gun legislation will not come soon, maybe not even this term (if he wins a second term, he'll drop the hammer then).

I own a revolver that I love. It is easy to load, easy to operate. I shoot it at a shooting range every once in awhile & of course hope I never have a reason to use it (I don't hunt...it's just so boring to me). I don't have my concealed carry permit but I might take the class at some point in the future. I do wish concealed carry permits were honored everywhere (churches, schools). I mean if I am responsible enough to carry a concealed weapon walking down the street or walking through the mall, why am I not responsible enough to carry it in church or on a school campus? Perhaps not coincidentally, mass shootings often occur...in churches & schools, where perps know law-abiding citizens will not have a gun on them.

I think a new law was just passed where guns are now permitted on campuses? Am I right, or is the case still being debated?

lovesit -

In Louisiana, there is a bill floating around that would allow those with concealed carry permits to carry a concealed weapon on a college campus. It has made it through committee, but not yet been voted on by the full legislature. I believe you have to be 21 to get a concealed carry permit in this state, so many college students would not be elgible anyway b/c they're too young for the permit.

The thing is, there are students walking around w/guns on them everyday. I work at a university & there aren't metal detectors anywhere so unless someone is searched, no one has a clue they have a gun. Many students hunt & regularly have weapons in their cars (I believe even having one in your car is not permitted if the car is on campus). Were the law to pass, I don't think there would suddenly be an influx of guns on campus. Many of the students who have their concealed carry permit already carry weapons on them, even though it is currently illegal to do so on a college campus.

I taught a student who was raped on campus two years ago. She got her concealed carry permit at some point after that, & I know for a fact she keeps a gun on her almost all of the time - in her purse - & I won't be the one to turn her in.

we don't have a gun in our house

i'm actually scared of them. my hubby wants to get one for protection. he tried to get me to hold one at the fair last year that was on display i was shaking the whole time.

if we do get one i hope i never have to use it of course he would keep it under lock & key or in a safe where the kids can't get to it.

I will never reach the point that I enjoy shooting one...I have to make myself go shoot. It is loud & just not my thing. The reason I have a revolver is b/c I tried shooting an automatic & I hated that the shell casings eject - it scared me. I know, it's silly. I just try to keep in mind that one day, I may need to use one & I need to know how. If your husband gets one, or gets one for you, get one with as little recoil as possible. Lighter guns tend to have a lot of recoil, which scares me when I shoot them.

Recoil just takes a little getting used to. When I was in the military I shot everything from a 9mm Browning to a 7.62mm machine gun. I did prefer the 5.54mm rifle, it has a bit of kick but since it's a rifle and you're shooting with it in your shoulder it's alot easier to handle. Of course, if you're going with concealed weapons, a rifle isn't practical. :P

Alot of the ranges up here will allow you to rent out 'loaner' weapons so you can get a feel for the different types of kickback. As for the cases ejecting, they can sting a bit when if you get popped (I had a guy in my trench who set up on the wrong side of me with a machine gun, so during a practice assualt I spent about five minutes getting pelted with them ) but overall it's not too bad.

Sorry, post ended up way longer than I meant.

I agree completely. There are far too many people out there with guns who don't know the first thing about safety. I know gun nuts have a problem with registering and with taking classes like gun safety, but with so many kids that get killed just playing with mom and dad's gun (which mom and dad figured they didn't know where it was kept) I think of it as a precaution.

On an side note, I am all for the right to bear arms, however, I don't see why anyone needs an AK47 or similar assault weapons. Those should just be illegal.
