As the world gets smaller it seems like we are faced with more & more diverse cultures. With that comes a lack of understanding of these cultures & some less educated people like to refer to these cultures with slurs.

We all know the common ones that have been bantered around for decades but what about the lesser known ones that "cut just as deep" when used.

The point of this thread is NOT to call each other bad names but to understand what, who & why we may or maynot use ethnic slurs when all we need to say is "Excuse me sir....." or "Excuse me mam.....".

Mine is this....
My family came from the Welsh coal mines from the British Isles. For reasons know only to them they came to the coal mines of Scranton & Hazleton, Pa. to settle. Many of my ancestors lived & died in the mines up until only about 40 years ago. All have moved on now. Do you know what "we" were called?? * Coal Crackers *
That is not a compliment. It means basically "to stupid to do anything but slog underground for nothing".
When some people learned my background they even called me that when I was a child !?!?!?!

Do you have any ethnic slurs that you want to air?? I just caution, please don't let this get out of hand!!

it really never bothered but it affected my parents, especially my dad, dumb pollack, and all the stupid jokes when we got a polish pope, i just chalked it up to ignorant people, anyone one who uses slurs is ignorant in my opinion

Not really for myself but I know that as a child my mother and her family were considered "poor white trash" because they didn't have alot of $$$. I don't understand though that now you can't say some words(some books are even excluded from reading lists(Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn etc. because of some of the wording) but for those that was the times. I think our kids should still read them but we need to empahsize that these words are not okay!) I find some people can call others for ex. crackers and get away with it everyone laughs ha ha so funny but when someone else says something like the n word for example(in a joke format) thats not okay. I don't get it!

i am curious as to what your opinions are, do you think there are as many slurs around as when we were younger? i really don't

I personally have never had to deal with racist remarks directed at me. I'm white/ Cherokee mixed from the south. I've had to deal with the fat jokes, I have Graves Disease and a goiter, both are thyroid disorders. Also in school I had a hard time writing neatly, b/c of a birth defect and my had writing was ridiculed on a regular basis.
I have a friend that is married to a Filipino lady and it's not so much words that they get it's the looks.
But until everyone in the world is able to look past race, religious preferences, regional wars, sexual orientation, political beliefs,and education level, there will always be hurtful remarks made or scornful looks cast.
