As the world gets smaller it seems like we are faced with more & more diverse cultures. With that comes a lack of understanding of these cultures & some less educated people like to refer to these cultures with slurs. |

it really never bothered but it affected my parents, especially my dad, dumb pollack, and all the stupid jokes when we got a polish pope, i just chalked it up to ignorant people, anyone one who uses slurs is ignorant in my opinion |

Not really for myself but I know that as a child my mother and her family were considered "poor white trash" because they didn't have alot of $$$. I don't understand though that now you can't say some words(some books are even excluded from reading lists(Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn etc. because of some of the wording) but for those that was the times. I think our kids should still read them but we need to empahsize that these words are not okay!) I find some people can call others for ex. crackers and get away with it everyone laughs ha ha so funny but when someone else says something like the n word for example(in a joke format) thats not okay. I don't get it! |

Quote cats meow: i am curious as to what your opinions are, do you think there are as many slurs around as when we were younger? i really don't There are differnt ones I think. I remember actually when I moved her from maine @10 (I was @ Catholic school.) My new teacher asked me what my nationality was, I said American. I was never so humiliated in my life. She kept saying No thats not it what are you? SHe sent a note home sying I was rude. I was in tears. Thats when My mom explained and said she wants to know what your relatives who have passed on were. So the next day I went in and said Some of my family came over around the time of the Mayflower. I have English, Irish, Scottish blood as well as Native American. I was the only child in my class who wasn't Portuguese. One day someone called me a green horn, when I found out the meaning I was so mad! It still bothers me to this day! So in reflection yes. I have been called names. |

Quote cats meow: i am curious as to what your opinions are, do you think there are as many slurs around as when we were younger? i really don't I think it depends where you are..... In the music it is rampant.... TV & movies & media it depends. I don't see a need for it. To me it is like using profanity. There is always a better way to talk to or describe someone than using a slur. When we were kids, Cats, I think Ethnic Slurs were used out of ignorance. I don't mean the generation was stupid. I mean we did not know what we were talking about. I grew up in a "white bread" world in the 1950's where to have a Black or Hispanic or anyone who wasn't as "white as snow" in school meant they were exchange students?!?! Really!! Then the 1960's arrived & all-hell-cut-loose in the cities from Selma to Watts. How innocent we were as children of the pre-race riots.... I guess I would say yes, I feel ethnic slurs are used as much now, just different ones..... |

I personally have never had to deal with racist remarks directed at me. I'm white/ Cherokee mixed from the south. I've had to deal with the fat jokes, I have Graves Disease and a goiter, both are thyroid disorders. Also in school I had a hard time writing neatly, b/c of a birth defect and my had writing was ridiculed on a regular basis. |

I have a friend that is married to a Filipino lady and it's not so much words that they get it's the looks. But until everyone in the world is able to look past race, religious preferences, regional wars, sexual orientation, political beliefs, and education level, there will always be hurtful remarks made or scornful looks cast. well said |

Quote cats meow: it really never bothered but it affected my parents, especially my dad, dumb pollack, and all the stupid jokes when we got a polish pope, i just chalked it up to ignorant people, anyone one who uses slurs is ignorant in my opinion Embarrssing story... my grandfather is a huge racist, so I should have known...BUT, he would tell me stories of back in the war he knew a POllack. He never used the term derogatorily? in front of me though. So, years later, at my last job, I found out, hile at lunch with 5 of my co-workers, that my boss was from Poland (his parents were anyways). So, in front of everybody, I said "I've never met a Pollack before!" I honestly had no idea it was a derogatory term! Thank God he did not take offense, especially after I explained the situation. I have never felt so terrible in my life. Even before that incident, though, racial slurs have always irked me, and I think it is b/c of my grandfather. I love him with all my heart, but that man...anyways, I have never let him or anyone around me say anything racially derogatory and ge away with it, though. I am white, and no one ever gets away with the n word, the cracker comments, the "pollack" comments, or anything like that. I don't listen to any new rap music, b/c that is all they know how to sing now. I used to love it about ten years ago. |

I think they have Scott and brit in there too but mostly Irish. I don't like any sort of religious views pushed upon others...I have my beliefs - to each their own. i don't judge a book by it's cover. i'm sorry to hear about what you went through in school and about your disease. i can't relate on those things, but it's never a reason to endure ridicule. |

Well not all new rap artists are dropping the N bomb in every song there are a lot who prefer not to use it! Well im mixed black and native American with a little white I am light skinned and I have long hair. I have found growing up that it wasn't white people that gave me a lot of crap. It was mostly darker skinned black girls that were always on my case. Telling me I was ugly and nobody liked me. And this has been going on my Whole life untill this day. But im older and wiser and I know its out of jealousy so I chalk it up as a win. Because I feel if someone takes the time out to point and discuss you good or bad they are admirers! But my son is another story his dad is full Samoan so he is real mixed up LOL my hubby gets a lot of stupidity for his race there first he gets a ticket about ever month faithfully because the police profile people also he doesn't look samoan so on all his tickets the race is marked black. I have witnessed a cop call him a FOB ( fresh off boat ) and I went to jail that night luckly I have good lawyers so I got an apology and some action taken. Even my son I wouldn't cal it racism or anything I tok him to get his shots when he was a baby and the lady was filling out his paper work and asked me if he was hispanic and I said no because he's not and the nurse is like are you sure? At this point I was trying to be nice because she's looking at my kid and at me like I was lying! But it will be a cold day in hell when my son says someone called him a racial slur because they don't know who his mama is!! |

But it will be a cold day in hell when my son says someone called him a racial slur because they don't know who his mama is!! The most beautiful people I have ever seen are half black-half whatever. My best friend is half black-half Columbian. And I think black babies are the cutest. Is that racist? I really don't know, I don't think it is. I see the babies and just want to squeeze them or clench my teeth b/c I can't stand how cute they are. |
