Quote sarahconnor: The Chronicles of Narnia were fantastic! Favorite book series of all time, right next to Left Behind. I was never so happy as to see the Narnia movie made, even though C.S. Lewis stated clearly he did not want the series turned into a movie after he died. I am still secretly glad his family ignored that little stipulation from him. |

Quote cats meow: i am right with you sarah, i was listening to a speech given by drake, i will not give him the title of pastor, he also said planned parenthood was an organization that kills babies, he also mentioned birth control as killing babies, he is beyond a nut job On most of his stuff he is wrong ITA except this one part. Im confused? If they perform abortions then he's right!!! The birth control thing no. it just prevents it from happening. It's different. One stops a heart beat which = death for the child and Bc doesn't do anything but keep a baby from begining, it does not end life. The rest of his speech was pure and utter nonsense! I don't like our pres either but to wish him dead is just plain wrong!! |

Quote grits1976: Quote cats meow: no decent human being should spew hate, this pastor is right up there with the terrorists, there is absolutely no difference, none ITA. I think that Christians can hate the sin not the SINNER. On a side note does everyone feel the same way about Rev. Wright? Or is it a double standard, b/c he has liberal tendencies? While I am not liberal on all issues(believe in the right to have a gun, in the death penalty for example) but I am a registered Democrat(believe in the right for gays to marry & pro-choice)and I think you are meaning Democrat equal liberals just as some mean Republican equal right wing which of course is not true and if you do NOT think that all Democrats are Liberals then of course, I apologise now and in advance. That being said, Reverend Wright is a CRACKPOT and like some preachers are mainly all about self-promotion. The more Obama recieved press, the MORE Reverend Wright capitalized on this by trying to ride his coattails. Here in San Antonio we have our own crackpot who is the head of a non-denominal church where thousands attend, with their own school and televised services beamed to millions of homes across the nation and abroad. My husband used to work in one of the most "prestigious" country club in S.A. when he first moved here as a young man and this pastor would come in for brunch with his wife and they would pay for "one" meal and she would load it up and they would both eat off of it. This action while living in a muti-million dollar home with a fleet of luxury automobiles. |

I know many people who have tendencies to lean to the left or right of issues. To me Liberals believe - in bigger govt., more control over a citizen's personal decisions, as in health care decisions, that should be made by dr. & patient. They also tend to want to play Robin Hood in the form of Well-fare. As a conservative - I have no problem w/ well-fare being used as boost to those who have fallen on hard times, but to let people raise 6 kids drive around in Cadillacs and be on well-fare for anywhere from 5 to twenty years, is absolutely repugnant to me. |

Quote Plot-Twister: I don't know why there is a political discussion going on in a christian thread....but I haven't read the entire thread.... With that said, I think I can understand a bit of Rev Wright based upon his heritage. I am ot black, but it is my understanding that many of his rants were in reference to the black man being stolen out of his original country and sent here to be sold as slaves. To further add to this insult once they were free they were still not, and to this day not, treated equally. That is why the "GDamn america" statements were made. Background does help. Please correct me if I am wrong. I don't like to read links, I tend to trust people when they say something. If it seems really out there I might ask for a link, but really, I prefer to talk not trade websites. Plot I am not quoting any website...and after you read my post it certainly will be clear that I didn't. Slavery is long gone...me nor my grandparents or my great great grandparents ever owned a slave. Not sure if black people were slaves in Ireland, but I do know that the Irish were made slaves by the English. We have come a long way baby! Time has changed and there are many opportunities for everyone..and this may pi** off some, but afirmative action gave many many opportunities for the black people of this country..mainly in the form of education and job opportunities. For The Reverend Wright to say what he did about this country (he made alot of cash BTW doing what he does) is only perpetuating a excuse for people to not live up to all they can be. There are so many black people that have made huge successes of their lives..wouldn't it be better for him to point out the successes? (do I really need to say thet this is "my opinion only" ? ) |

Everyone can say that they have a black friend....as I do, but I don't know what they face on a daily basis. I have been shopping and had customer cops follow us. I have been in a car with them and been pulled over for no reason. I live in the north too! Stereotypes are everywhere. Not just black people, but Asian also. I was in the car with another friend and some driver is yakking away about riceburners and all sorts of other crap. I don't think it was a disservice to his country (Wright) again, he has experienced a different reality than you or I. I don't knock him for getting paid....part of his job is public speaking. He isn't trying to get his congregation to sit on their buts and collect welfare. He is trying to empower them to accept and embrace their heritage and let them know that it is ok to be angry and forgiveness is divine. I know that this all sounds so very liberal and whitebread (did I spell that right? looks like I am calling myself a loaf of bread) but I really feel that is what his intent is. Same as Jesse Jackson, MLK, Sharpton, and the rest. They can come off as whack jobs, but their overall misson is clear to me. They want equality and while we have come along way, we have a long road to travel. I also understand about your Irish decent. I am Native American and Polish....Neither one was treated fairly by this great country. Especially my native American heritage which has pretty much been extinguished. I wont get into that, but these two have really been raked over the coals. But nowhere near as much as the African decendants. OK I really am going to bed now....tomorrow ..... |

"you give me several quotations from the Bible, which you call the Word of God, to show me that my opinions on religion are wrong, and I could give you as many, from the same book to show that yours are not right; consequently, then, the Bible decides nothing, because it decides any way, and every way, one chooses to make it. |

These men will forever live with that accusation. Can you imagine that on your record? Niether Jackson or Sharpton apologised to the Six men!~ They just moved on to another cause..... Its funny how you think you know what they want are you a black man in America? Your right a criminal is a criminal no matter their skin color but do you how it feels to be stereotype a criminal for the color of your skin? Okay they were wrong on that case of the case. But do you know how many innocent black males have went to jail for years for a crime they didn't committ. Those boys should feel lucky they got off. Do you think that the people wrongfully imprisioned get an apology or get the time back? How about NO!! I think Jackson and Sharpton try to bring light to the injustices that are faced everyday by black people that others think don't exsist or just chose to ignore. I just think people shouldn't judge unless they know how it is to be black in America or just a minority. |

Then you should go to my son's school. Last year another kid kept picking on my son and giving hi, grief and calling him rude names(about his orientation) after a week of this when he did it again and put his hands on my son, my son put him in a headlock and punched him in the face. This kid goes home and tells his daddy that mine called him teh N word(which he did not- he's not perfect but he isn't like that either)this kids dad waited @ my childs bus stop and threatened to put his boot up my kids butt! My son came home in tears! and when he got to school the only one to get in trouble was my son! so you are wrong! IMO!! where I live all a kid has to do is scream he/she called me the N word and the kids who supposedly say it are in trouble! Yet it's okay to tease other kids and call them Gay, to make fun of their weight and so many other things! It's a crock!! IMO!! Im still mad about this 2 years later!! |

These men will forever live with that accusation. Can you imagine that on your record? Niether Jackson or Sharpton apologised to the Six men!~ They just moved on to another cause..... I think it is kinda funny that two white women are discussing this topic....a person of color please feel free to jump on in! And REI I say that sincerely not sarcastically. I strongly disagree with your interpretation of Jackson and Sharpton. These men may not have been slaves but they certainly know about the discrimination that the black man or woman or child faces. Prison populations are skewed toward the black man (and the hispanic man but that is another topic) Yes there are white men who are "bad" but many black men get convicted on circumstantial evidence far more than the white man. Jackson and Sharpton highlight these injustices. Sometimes they are wrong. Sometimes the courts are wrong too. When a person is found innocent and released from prison - do they get an apology? Nope. Do they get any compensation for their horror? Nope. Let's break it down into just an accusation or a trial. Does the person that was acquitted ever get an apology from the prosecution? Not that I am aware of. So, my point is that I think that J and S serve a purpose. They are the watchdogs of equality in a sense. Would we know as much about the Rodney King case if it weren't for them? there are many more, but I am not going to look them up. That is just the first one that comes to my mind. As white people we really are favored, even though we are becoming a "minority" as some would like to say. Perhaps we are, I don't know. Or maybe things are equalling out. What I do know is that the black person (and the native american, but that is another thing too) needed affirmative action to give them a leg up because of the prejudices that were out there at the time. Times are different now...I know many people of color along with many white people who think it should go and many who think it should stay...I don't know. You say that they don't care ( J and S) about what the white man is accussed of. I agree to a point. I am sure they care a bit....but that is not their mission. Their mission is to bring forth the way in which blacks get mistreated and try to bring about change. |

Quote rei1: I don't think it was a disservice to his country (Wright) again, he has experienced a different reality than you or I. I don't knock him for getting paid....part of his job is public speaking. That is soo not true.... Wright was NEVER a slave, but he makes a majority of his living harping on it. I personally like Bill Cosby's take on the matter... Get up off your ass and make something of yourself...Not a quote, but pretty close... What isn't true? I didn't say that he was a slave...I said that he experienced a different reality than you or I. Slavery is something our country did. Why can some people be proud of their heritage in terms of coming over on the Mayflower or being a descendant of royalty or being related in thier family tree to a historic figure and they can continually talk about it, bear their family crest etc, but blacks are supposed to forget that their ancestors were slaves? Does that really make sense? Why should a black person have to look at the confederate flag all of the time and be reminded that their ancestors were slaves and part of the country fought to keep them that way? I like Bill Cosby too. But J and S don't embrace the "poor me" they, like Cosby want our youth of color to get up and get moving. J and S are activists. Cosby is a comedian and public speaker. There is a difference. |
