Just google 'Obama Cairo speech' & I'm sure several links to the full text of the speech will come up.

What gets me is how he said "We are not a nation of Christians... we are a nation of individuals." So now America has no distinct factors? Why, then, are people still flocking to get here?
Although I am a Christian, and have quit taking offense to him totally dismissing how this country was formed, this is a complete lie. The majority is Christian.

China is a nation of individuals, too. Its called the "People's Republic of China." Lets just move there to see how a nation of "indivduals" is treated. Why aren't BOTH parties raising up and confronting him on some of these issues" We are losing our "self" to appease every one else, and that is not fair, nor balanced. And no station is reporting on this.

we are not a country of christians. We are a country of freedom. We are free to be christian, jewish, agnostic, athiest, muslim, speghetti monster worshipers, anything we want. We do not have a national religion.

This country was formed by people coming here for religious freedom. Most were outlaws of some sort and didn't want to be catholic. Actually I am grateful that we all aren't that puritan factor that got so much play. I look very pale in black and I like witches.

i have to thank you lovesit for making me read the entire speech, i know i sometimes miss things but i did not read anywhere where he said we are not a nation of christians , we are a nation of individuals, when you really think about it, whether he said it or not, this isn't a country made up only of christians, they may be the majority, but they are not the only ones living here

You are right, that is what says on our money & we do use the Bible for oaths...oaths of office & swearing in witnesses in court. However, we have never had a national religion. Christian ideas & principles are woven all through the history of this nation, however the feds have not, & hopefully do not ever, established a national religion. I don't want that b/c today it might be Christianity, tomorrow something else.

John Adams once said that "Our Constitution was made only for a religious and moral people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other."

He didn't say 'Christian' people...most religions emphasize basic moral principles.

witches...
True. But the majority in America are Christians. For him to say, quote, "We are not a nation of Christians...", I guess we just interpret that statement differntly.
To me, we are not even the melting pot of the world anymore. America has lost its face with that one sentence from his mouth. And even if that face was not Christianity, it would be just as sad as it is now. Who are we if there is no commonality? You say the commonality is our freedom, I say not for long.

I agree there MUST be religious freedom, just don't let him debunk it by saying we have none. Don't let him say "We are just a nation of people, thats all we are..." I don't know if you are religious or not, and it shouldn't matter. If he was saying we are a nation of non-believers, you should disagree with him for the simple fact that is not true. Just like his actual statement was.

We also have seperation of church and state. I don't think they are rolling over in their graves. And yup I have looked at my money (what little I have of it) and I know what it says. And as for the 10 commandments (I thought they were mentioned here...oops wrong of me) not all of them are even laws. I wish they were and I could lock my kids up for not honoring me. Oh yeah, and my dad could have been in jail for adultry (he would have deserved it) I would actually be there because I covet my neighbors no weed filled grass lawn.

Boy you are relatively new around here not to know where I stand religiously. LOL

I am a non believer (ooohhh) and actually am impressed and glad that my president recognizes that there are many different people and belief systems that encompass our country. Here we are able to mouth off about our government, argue on a message board about anything we want, call the president names like "the shrub" and "osama".

I look at it differently than you do is all. Where he says we are a nation of people, I take that to mean we are no better than they are. And we aren't. There are extremests here just as there are extremists everywhere else. Don't hold up Timothy McVeigh and show that as our representative anymore than holding up Bin Laden should be the standard by which we judge the muslim faith.

Basically I thought he was saying "we all put our pants on one leg at a time" type of thing. But we can disagree, that is cool.

I didn't look it up just now to give you the complete quote, but I heard for myself as well where he said "We are not a nation of Christians, Muslims, Jews (A couple of words here)...We are a nation of individuals." Which, literally, in true.
I am not discounting all other religions and agnostics. What gets me is that he took away the "melting pot" pronciples that give people a reason to come here. We have no distinction from anyone else now, thanks to his one statement. Like I said, China is the nation for individuals.

I, personally, want to be treated as an American, not an individual. That is what my family fought for, and probably half the people on this thread, and no one should be able to take that away from me, or you, in one sentence.
That is what still gets me, even if it doesn't get to anyone else. I wish I was happy being an individual with you guys, but I consider myself something else first.

I remember now where I read that some time ago. My bad. I have the memory of an alzheimer's patient...Yea, we just read into the sentence differently. Believe me, I wish I saw it the way you did. I would be happier.
