We're doing the drive from San Francisco to LA along the Pacific this summer. I'm wondering if anyone has done that, stayed anywhere along the way, i.e., Carmel, Monterey, Pismo Beach, etc., and found a hotel that was memorable, or liked the Hearst Castle, didn't like the Hearst Castle, things of that sort. Have no idea what to expect but my husband wants to make reservations to stay somewhere along that drive and since we'll probably only do this once in our lifetime, I hope to get it right. Any thoughts?

I've made that drive. We stayed at the San Luis Obispo Inn. It had a great view of the beach and nice restaurants in the area. It's not that far from Pismo Beach either. Our room had a refrigerator, stove and dishes. It's really great if you have children. Enjoy your drive!

Do you have small children or older kids? Did they enjoy the scenery?

We have made the drive many times- In fact we drive up the coast quite often - My favorite place to stay is in San Simeon- at the Best Western Cavalier Inn:

Yeah, gommie is on the right track. It is a beautiful drive but be prepared for some pretty 'hairy' moments on the highway - it's quite rugged country along the cliffs and shoreline, but beautiful. Be sure to stop at Ragged Point and watch the Elephant Seals. Then stop on the way in Morro Bay and watch the cute Sea Otters playing in the bay.

the Madonna inn is at the very least a must see...if not a stay there would be so fun!....in San fran....it depends if you are in the city or outside of it...Pacifica is awesome and has some great places to stay...they have one of the coolest bowling alley's I have ever been to.
And if you are hitting LA...stop in Anaheim and take a day to go to Disneyland.....it really is the most magical place on earth!

If you take your time and stop along the way from Carmel to Cambria - you are going to see some spectacular scenery- Nepenthe in Big Sur, is a must see-even if you don't eat-- The cafe has great Panini sandwiches-

Geez gommie - even though I live here on the central coast, I have never been to this place. I'd love to see it myself sometime, but if it's a really hard climb, I might have to give it a pass.

I haven't noticed it being too bad eppy- I think if it were I would have noticed- it sits on two levels- the cafe being much more casual-beer and sandwiches-they have a gift shop on the same level as the cafe-the view from vantage points is spectacular--I wish I loved as close to all these sites as you do-if you ever get chance to take a drive up-do it- you can always decide after you get there if you think it will be too much of a hike--and you will have enjoyed the scenic drive along the way- so all will not be lost------
Have you ever been over to the pier at San Simeon?

As you enter Santa Barbara County on your way down to LA, you might want to take a very short side-trip to the little Danish town of Solvang. It's ver unique and you might find it very had to leave once your get there.
