do you believe in assisted suicide? i definitely do, i think we should be able to make our own choices regarding our quality of life, i know i would not want to face a long, painful death if there was no chance for recovery, i believe in being able to die with dignity

ITA!! Dope me up and let me go I don't want to be in pain and seeing my family in pain. I rather just go and be done with it! I wouldn't want everyone waiting around waiting for me to die ! Im glad about this law because if it was me I would be trying to pull my own plug!

I never believed in Assisted Suicide but after seeing my Mother go through cancer of the breast, lung & brain I do now. I took care of her before she needed to be hospitalized & she begged me to help her die. Unless you go through that kind of HELL you have no idea how hopeless & helpless you can feel......
Yes, I do.... I will fight the best fight I can BUT if all is lost I want the choice.........

ITA!! I still feel bad for the doc years ago who went to jail for it. I hope to never be in that situation but if I were asked by my mom or hubby I'm not sure if I could do it!

I remember that incident. People judge others without having a clue what their lives have degraded to. This man should never have been jailed. Believe me, he was in his own Hell & had been for a long time to be driven to that.
I realize there has to be law..... I just think with the population aging this need to be addressed both legally & ethically......

I agree here, too. I do think, however, there should be some type of stipulation, like as long as you put in writing you want to die, and have it notarized, or at least witnessed by someone who is official, it should be permitted. Because without some type of control, how will people prove they were just fulfilling the wishes of s dying loved one, and not a loved one who was still fighting? I think this is a merciful law and should be passed everywhere, with control.

I keep coming back to a statement I heard once...."You wouldn't let your pet suffer would you??"
My answer is no.... "Why would let your loved one suffer??"

that's for damn sure, i lost both of my parents very suddenly, my mom and dad were on vacation, having dinner, he had a heart attack and died right in front of her, we had to fly back, my mom, me and my dad's coffin, dick drove the car back
10 years later...my mom had been living with us for 8 years, in law appt. she had a heat attack in our pool, i found her floating face down in the deep end, for me it is like yesterday, on the way to the hospital, i thought about keeping her alive no matter what, knowing that is not what she would want, i just wanted my mom to be alive, by the time i got to the hospital i knew i would honor her wishes, i did not have to make that decision, she was DOA,
i think back now, my parents died doing something fun, and they never had to suffer, i think this was way easier than what you experienced, bailey

My Dad died 5 years ago. He developed Congestive Heart Failure with Pulmanary complications. This took about 4 years to become critical. In the meantime he developed a very rapid Alzheimers condition. We had to finally put him in a Nursing Home. He was there only 17 days before he had a massive Heart Attack & died without any of us there. That will always haunt me. Looking back this was a very undignified way to die.... He was a very active man. He loved Hunting & Fishing & was a pillar of the community. If he had his mental faculties with him he would have been appauled at his condition.
There was nothing we could do but watch him deteriorate...

Whether it is sudden death or drawn out there is no easy way to loose a parent. I remember vividly when I was a child thinking that if my parents were to die I would die too. Granted those were the thoughts of a child but it is odd how your think these fleeting thoughts & feeling when it is actually taking place..... Life goes on.......

I have to agree 100%. Its sad that we are more humane to animals (i.e. euthanasia) than we are to humans. I want the option to die quickly and painlesslessly if I were terminal, rather than to put my family through the tragedy of a slow death process.

There are many deseases where depression is a debilitating factor! It would be so easy to say, "I want to end my life because I can't stand being sick anymore!" While a person should be allowed to decide whether they want to live or die, allowing just anybody to assist in this process is a mistake! Kevorkian assisted anybody who wanted to end their life and then sat there and watched the person die! Psychologically, there was a flaw in his method, and he needed to be stopped! Physicians should have to have a license and pass psychological tests in order to assist a patient in ending their life and then leave that patient to himself!

i may be mistaken but, i thought all of kevorkian's patients were terminal, he stayed with his patients i believe to make sure there was no further suffering, i also believe many family members were in the room too, i do agree there have to be specific guidelines, maybe two doctor's involved????

You are absolutely right Cats.... No one was allowed to just decide they wanted to "end it all". That is stupid!! These people were all extremely terminal. As for a doctor saying it is O.K. please..... Most doctors I know are less likely to be good judges of someones mental health than a family member of that person.
This opens up a whole other subject but doctors now days are a shadow of the doctors of years ago....
