I've been battling weight for the past 7 yrs. Before that I looked and felt great. As far as tips to get motivated one for me was being out of breath all the time and being put on blood pressure pills. My mom died when I as 19 and my brother was 17. It was a couple of months before my wedding. She was only 36! She had a heart attack. So that has really hit me hard now that I realize just how young that really was. I'm 35 now.
One thing weight watchers had suggested is to put a picture of yourself on your fridge! Think I'm going to to do that. One luck at that fat bod and I will think twice for I open it for junk! Small changes really can help and add up. Fat free skim milk is a huge difference in whole milk and the skim delight milk by bordens(I think) is really good can't even tell the differnce. Watch you bread and buy 45 cal or less a slice bread. Gr turkey instead of gr beef. And really reading the serving size on pkg's has helped me. I was eatting a bowl of cereal for yrs and it turns out thats not a serving! serving is usually 3/4 c to a 1 cup. I couldn't make myself do this so I just stopped eatting all together and started having a slimfast shake for breakfast and lost 23 lbs! Keep after YOU CAN DO IT. We all can!!

wow - i hadn't been in the lounge for awhile and i'm glad i checked it out today. i think this is a great idea.
i have been battling my weight for about 4 years now.
currently 190 and it should be a lot lower.
i'd like to get down to 150.
and i love getting motivation from other people and motivating others.
is there still room to join in?
i've never done weight watchers and i'm not sure how it works.

Well really can't do the true ww plan here just because theres no way to give you the point slider thinkamobob. But I can let you know the chest of it.
-drink 8 glasses of water, caffenine free drinks count just have to watch the calories.
-always have breakfast should be high in fiber and protein
-try eating 5 or 6 small meals and not just 3 big ones
-portion control is key read the labels and see how much a portion really is this is my BIG problem area.

ww is a great program and is usual no more than 10-15$ a week and its online to. Now I don't feel I have to go since I have all the info I can do it at home. If you would like I can try to help if you wanted to email me or something on you foods and I could give you the point value. for the weight that you are you should be in the 24 points a day range. Just let me know and I will try to help you we are all in this together!

Thanks akwood. If you could send me the point system via email that would be great. I'm probably going to start full force on Monday since I have grad school graduation this weekend.

Hi, thanks for the tips. I also wanted to share with you, a friend of mine has told me about, and shared with me. Most diet snack bars and stuff are not very tasty, but these are. I don't know, but maybe you would be interested in them too. I so would to share some information.

I just found this thread. I started my life style change... I don't like call it a diet because it really is a matter of changing my life style... anyway, I started on January 1st. Here are some thing that I have been doing that have really helped me.

I gave up sugar caffine and as many artificial products I could as well as most processed foods... like frozen dinners. Those things are loaded with sodium and of course I don't eat any fast food. Even frozen dinners like weight watcher and healthy choice have a lot of sodium.. that and my doctor told me that a lot of frozen and canned foods can loose their nutricianal value ... and have preeservatives that can cause us to gain and not loose. Fresh is better.

I weighed 268 when I started my goal is to be 125-130 by February first of 2010 as the doctor said that I should loose it slowly so I would be more likely to keep it off. And he said it would take me about a month to six weeks to get into a routine and that I probably would not loose any weight before that period of time.. because the suplements and metabolism would take awhile to kick in.

He multiplied the weight I should be 120-130 by 10 which means that I must eat 1200-1300 calories a day to make my goal. And I should eat those calories spread over four to six meals/snacks which would also speed up my motabolism. And I should not eat after eight at night. And drink at least six glasses of fluid a day... he said filtered or distilled water is better than bottled water or plain tap water... and less expensive and better for the environment.

I have a slow acting thyroid which makes it harder for me to loose weight, so he put me on a synthetic thyroid and also put me on vitimin suplements of vitimin B12 B complex C D, and A as well as a fiber suplement, omega 3 fish oil and flaxseed oil and iron. He said this was better than taking a multi vitimin because they could metabolize on their own and he could be more sure I would get the right amount... some people I learned have greater deficientcies in certain vitimin and minerals and sometimes a multi-vitimin is not enough to make up for that.

Also if you are going to go on a life style change.. you should see a doctor and have your thyroid and surgars checked... this very important especially for women. Also my doctor did an EKG to check my heart.

Also, my doctor said it is better to not use any certain diet plan.. mostly because if it cost something or requires a fee and we can't affort it anymore, we are less likely to be able to convert to a plan of our own making. That is why setting cetain calorie intake based on how much you want to loose is better because it does not lock you into one certain program.. which he says can also be psychologically damaginge because like with weight watchers if you eat over you points you might feel bad.. and some people find it hard to follow set program do to family commitments.. job commitments and other things.

The calorie counting is better because it is more flexible...You can eat what you want just as long as you dont go over your calories... But that does not mean that you should eat fast food just because you can. But that is another aspect of calorie counting... you don't have to feel deprived... and if you go over a little bit one day.. you can just eat less calorise the next day or sometime during the week.

I am also not to loose more than three pounds a week. And I write down everything I eat or drink and the calories in each serving.. and yes I measure all my food which has worked out really well. He also gave me this artical that showed me that I could eat a lot of one thing and have the same calories as if I ate a high content calories or fat thing... like I can have three plain donuts and that is less calories than half an bagal with low fat cream cheese.

I can have three cups of beans and a cup of brown rice and small salad and have less calories than if I ate a ceasar salad with chicken and low fat dressing... or a hamberger with fries and a shake. Having it in this perspective was helpful and really when I try to eat as much as some those healthy things would give me in less calories.. well, I just can't eat that much.

It took me about a month to get my metabolism in check and when I took the vitimin B within two days of taking it.. It was like the difference between night and day.

I exercise four days a week.. three of the days I do pool exercises for an hour and gym equipment for an hour. One day I take seated exercise class for an hour which is leg movements and core strengthening and hand weights where I do twenty different exercises using two pound weights twenty times each.. that's 400 reps.. it was hard when I started, but I am now using 3 pound weights.

I only weigh myself once a week.. So far I have lost 30 pounds which is pretty much right on target.. and last week they started measuring me for inches lost. I have lost four inches in my waist and two inches in my hips and two inches in my arms.

And the most exciting thing happened today... I fit into a size 16 dress. when started, I was a size 24..and I fit into a size 14 pants and I started in a size 22 and I fit into a size 14 top and I starte there at a size 24. I am so stoked and so anxious to keep going.

By the way I have spina bifida which is a birth defect so it is hard for me to mobilize and get around... and it is largly because of my mobility issues, that it was that I gained weight in the first place. I had a pressure sore on my foot and had to stay in bed for nearly three years and that made me gain over a hundred pounds... well now I am out of bed THANK GOD and I am on my way to getting back to a healthier weight and I have never been more happy with myself in my whole life.

I also want to say this... It is important that you know that you are only doing this for you and nobody else... I thought for a long time that if I lost weight that other would love me more or like me more... I realized that the people who really love me are going to love me no matter what size I am. I also don't beat myself up when I don't exercise as hard as I should have on any given day.

I do not use derogatory remarks about myself like fat... and I have never ever thought I was unworthy of anything.. mostly this is because of my disability... I am not going to not have something just because I have a disability and I am not less of a human being or less loveable just because I don't fit into the mold that society says I should.

That is why I don't keep pictures of myself around that are pics of when I was a different higher weight than I am now... I think seeing that just causes self loathing.. and if you don't value yourself in whatever your condition is ... well nobody else is going to either. I also think self loathing causes me to be less motivated.

I am proud of myself that everyday I keep my promise to myself that I was going to make a life style change and that I did what I needed to do on anygiven day to continue toward my goal. I don't focus on what I did not do, I focus on what I did do. And I feel so good about myself.. if I don't loose another pound.. I will always feel good about myself.. and sometimes just that one thing makes me motivated to do what I have to do.. and then I get closer to my goal. I hopes his helps you all and good luck. If I can do it so can you.

cardgirl - I really enjoyed your post. Great insight on healthy eating & also I loved what you said about doing this for yourself & not for others' approval. That can't be said enough. Congrats on your loss thus far.

I've been drinking tons of water which helps to keep me feeling full & so I snack less. I'm also trying to cut back on coffee, or drink decaf, b/c the caffeine dehydrates me & often the body mistakes dehydration for hunger.
