Emily and Casey hatch a plan, Alison and Chris play nicely, Dr. Decker is called to consult on Paul's case, Meg and Paul defend their innocence and Susan confronts Emily.
Emily meets Casey at Java. He believes this means she will see him again but she shows him the real reason she called him - Tom has begun proceedings to take Daniel from her. Casey says he can’t help because he moved out. Emily says if he moved back in, his father might be more lenient! Casey doesn’t want to but Emily begs him. “Just do it!” she says. Casey finally agrees because Emily convinces him that this is the only way she can keep Daniel.
Tom takes Daniel home; the kid wants to know why he was taken out of camp and Tom says there are family issues going on. He says Daniel can’t go on vacation with Emily! Tom says they are changing the custody agreement; Daniel asks what Emily did this time. Tom won’t tell him, which angers Daniel. Casey arrives and asks if they can talk.
Chris sees Alison at the hospital and tries to be chummy with her. She is very formal with him. Susan walks out and asks what is going on. Susan becomes angry very quickly but Alison calms her down. She says she can fight her own battles and Susan needs to back off. Susan is called to the ER. Alison tells Chris to keep his distance from her mom. He apologizes again. Allie says she just wants to move on and continue with the nursing program. Then she says she never wants to see him again. Susan catches up with Alison a little later. Allie says again that she is ready to move on and now she can because Chris is leaving the hospital.
In her suite, Barbara meets with a lawyer and insists that Paul didn’t kill anyone. He says they’ll clear Paul at the trial and Barbara says it can’t go that far! He says they need help to get the case cleared before trial and Barbara tells the lawyer to hire anyone who can help. He warns that the expert has a bad history; Barbara doesn’t care as long as the expert can clear Paul. The lawyer takes her to meet the man. Downstairs, Barbara meets the forensics expert - Dr. Rick Decker! Barbara can’t believe it. She tries to fire the lawyer and Rick. Rick says he is Paul’s only hope and that he isn’t a killer any longer. He says he is in the honesty business now!
At the police station, Margo hauls Paul into the interrogation room. She shows Meg in and Paul hugs her. She gives them two minutes alone. Meg asks how he is doing and then tells him that Barbara didn’t kill Sofie! Paul says things are getting very muddy but Meg believes they are nearly in the clear. She says they have to tell Margo everything; Paul brings up Sofie’s dying words but Meg isn’t worried. “Yeah, because that always works,” he says. Margo returns and Paul says he is ready to talk. Paul tells her everything except Sofie saying Meg’s name. Margo has more questions but Paul can’t answer them. Meg steps in and tells her the rest. Margo says Meg just implicated herself and is quite harsh. Meg and Paul defend themselves and Margo accuses them of obstructing justice. Barbara and her lawyer arrive with his bail and Margo is forced to release him. Margo tells him not to leave town. The lawyer tells Margo that his expert needs access to the files. She is shocked to see Decker. So is Paul. Rick says he is the only one who can save Paul; Paul says he doesn’t want Rick on the payroll. Margo says Rick can’t get anywhere near her evidence and he pulls out a court order ordering that she share all information! Paul can’t believe it. Rick listens to all of their disparaging comments but doesn’t become angry. He says he understands why everyone is nervous around him and then says Margo should be happy he is around because now she can find the real killer. The gathering separates. Tom calls Margo and asks her to come home right away.
Rick arrives at the hospital and automatically sees Susan. Before she can glimpse him, he asks his handler to keep them separated. Rick gets to the morgue and begins examining Sofie’s body. Alison walks in the door and screams! The guard tries to explain. Chris arrives and hears Allie screaming. The guard tries explaining again but Alison is too upset to listen. She stays with Chris; he hugs her. The guard returns inside and in a few minutes, Rick returns with him. Chris calls him a killer but Rick isn’t affected by his words at all. He apologizes for scaring Alison and leaves with his handler. Alison breaks down and hurries away.
Rick arrives at Barbara’s with his handler. He says Paul couldn’t have been the killer because a medical person had to have killed her. He says a non-professional wouldn’t have been able to kill Sofie so easily. Barbara is stunned. “We’re looking for a doctor or a nurse,” he says.
Margo arrives home to find Casey and Tom waiting. He says he is done with the Emily affair, thrilling Margo and Tom. He asks if he can move back and Margo hugs him. They welcome Casey home and automatically begin bad-mouthing Emily. They promise to give him his privacy. Casey turns and tells them they have to drop the custody suit against Emily! Tom refuses so Casey turns to Margo and plays on her maternal instincts. She won’t listen to him either, frustrating Casey.
Susan overhears Emily leaving a message for Casey at Java. She asks what Emily is doing now and Emily explains. Susan thinks this is a very bad idea and says Emily has no common sense. Emily says, “At least I didn’t marry a serial killer.”
At Fairwinds, Paul wonders what angle Rick is trying to work. Meg says it doesn’t matter as long as he clears Paul. She kisses him. Paul goes upstairs to change and when he returns they make love. Meg says they can conquer anything together. Barbara calls and tells Paul that Meg may not be innocent!
