Janet followed her daughter, Liberty, to Oakdale in 2008 soon after she learned of DNA test results which named Brad Snyder as Liberty's father. She was still a little bit in love with Brad and threw herself at him. Brad was flattered but didn't give in to his old feelings. Liberty had it out with her mother and told her to get over the past. This helped Janet open her eyes and she began dating Jack Snyder.
They were at odds over Parker and Liberty's relationship but tried to help the kids approach their relationship in an adult fashion; Brad overreacted when he learned the kids slept together and set Liberty up wit Leo, who attacked her. Brad accused Parker of the attack; Janet stuck up for her daughter and Jack stuck up for Parker. They were nearly over this obstacle when Janet realized that Jack was still harboring feelings for Carly.

At the farm house, Janet worries to Jack about Liberty and how vulnerable she is. He tries to calm her fears and tells her just to trust the doctor. Liberty comes in and Jack gives her a vampire book as a gift. As her mother tries to chat with her about it, Liberty asks her to try 'keeping it real'.
Liberty and her mother go to the hospital. Janet tries to be chatty but Liberty leaves for the bathroom. Janet turns to Jack to tell him how badly she thinks this is going. She just wants to be a mother and comfort her daughter. He tells her not to give up. As they hug, Carly walks into the corridor. She sees them and backs away, bumping into Liberty. She's brought her a care package of sketching materials. Liberty asks her to stick around for awhile. They go into a room to start her IVF. Liberty tells Carly about her plans for a prom dress. Her mood changes and she becomes depressed.
In the corridor, Janet continues telling Jack that she has spent her whole life trying to keep her daughter happy and safe. He insists that she's done that and there is no more she can do. Carly comes out and tells Janet that Liberty needs her mom right now. Janet runs in. Jack gets Carly some coffee. Susan wanders over to them and tries to reassure them about Liberty. She suggests they have family members tested in case a marrow donor is needed. Carly decides that she and Jack should get tested. They join hands and walk off. After they get tested, he buys her a chocolate bar. Janet comes out and they explain that they were just tested. She starts flipping out and accuses them of acting like the chemo will fail. Jack calms her. She apologizes. He promises that they will help her daughter through this.
Carly's startled to find Jack is already back at her place and waiting for her. They discuss the kids and he looks at her coffee mugs. He apologizes for what he said in New York about feeling like he was cheating on her whenever he's with Janet. On cue, Janet arrives. Carly takes her in the front room while Jack hides in the kitchen. Janet asks Carly if she wants to help with Liberty; she knows it would mean a lot to her daughter. Janet cries and admits that she sneaks into her daughter's room at night to watch her sleep. She feels like she is only making Liberty more afraid. She apologizes for crying like this about things and thanks Carly for putting up with her. Carly offers to get Liberty involved with a design project. After Janet departs, Jack slinks out of hiding. He was afraid that Janet would jump to conclusions if she knew he was there. He tells Carly that they can't go back to pretending that they don't exist to each other anymore. She laughs and tells him about the pact she made with Molly to forget about men. "I need to not love you so much," she cries into his shoulder. They hold hands and she tells him that, "There can be no us." He holds back his tears and walks out.
Jack returns to the farm house. Janet is cleaning. She tells him about her conversation with Carly and asks him if she needs to worry about him and Carly anymore. "You don't have to worry," he promises.
