Will was born into a loving family. His mother, who had quite a wild life, was determined to give her children the best. She was nurturing and very attentive to her family's needs. Will was very comfortable and secure in his life, at least as a child. He grew up in a house with an older brother, Paul and an older sister, Jennifer. He also had a half brother named Parker. All in all, Hal and Barbara were able to love all of their children very much.
Life didn't stay the same for this family. Barbara found herself smitten by a man named Craig Montgomery. When Barbara could not vision being married to Hal anymore, she divorced him to marry Craig. The only problem with this new marriage was that Craig didn't love Barbara or her children. He married her for her money. His mother was the victim of a terrible explosion which left her physically and mentally scared. She turned her back to friends and family to lead a very quiet life.
During Will's young teenage years, he got into some trouble and ended up institutionalized. He was declared sane again after serving some time for Rose D'Angelo's murder. Once he was out, he had to start his life over again. Not every one was sure that he was sane again. Will's self esteem was low.
After being friends with Casey Hughes for a while, he met Gwen Norbeck. Gwen was interested in Casey, but Casey didn't want anything to do with her. Gwen and Will didn't hit it off that well at first, but that eventually changed when Gwen announced that she was pregnant. When everyone wanted to know who the father was, Will spoke up and said he was. Later the truth was told and he wasn't the father, Casey was. During this time, Will and Gwen got to know each other and fell in love. Neither one had finished high school yet, so everyone was against the marriage. Hal finally agreed that they could live with him if they promised to finish school.
Once they started college, things changed for them. Will bought answers to a test online and got caught. Will and Gwen had a huge argument the night of graduation. Gwen graduated and Will got drunk. Jade Taylor just happened to be out that night too and she found Will. They slept together and the next morning, Will felt horrible, from a hangover and for what he had done to Gwen. Jade thought that she was pregnant with his baby but they soon learned that she was faking it. Gwen and Will patched things up and stayed together.
Gwen stopped going to college long enough to cut her first record. Her producer just happened to be Will's half brother Adam. One time in LA after a successful show, Gwen and Adam shared a kiss. Gwen's mom, Iris, happened to see them kiss and word got back to Will. This caused a lot of tension between Adam and Will. Adam started having feelings for Gwen, but he couldn't act on them. He tried to hide it by dating Jade Taylor. But it didn't work.
He and Gwen finally married and it seemed they had the perfect marriage until Cleo came along and tried to break them up. Will felt sorry for her and convinced Gwen to let her hang around. Cleo fell for him and, on the trip to Branson, tried to kill Gwen and take over her life, including her marriage to Will. She was caught by police and sent away.
Will and Gwen found out they were pregnant but Gwen lost the baby. They learned she could never carry and child and looked for a surrogate; Alison volunteered but that baby was lost, too. They tried to adopt but learned that no agency would approve them because of Will's mental health issues. Barbara convinced them to try private adoption and found a family; it turned out that the baby was Sofie's, though, and that Barbara had paid for it. Will and Gwen were incensed. Sofie refused to let them adopt but later changed her mind. She insinuated herself into Will and Gwen's life and then decided she wanted the baby back - and kidnapped her!
Will and Gwen found Sofie and they went to court; they were awarded custody and decided to start a new life away from Oakdale.

At the cottage, Will returns with sandwiches and munchies. Gwen is upset because Carly's kids can't make the party. She wonders if leaving so soon is a mistake. Will says there will never be a perfect time to leave. Outside, Barbara nearly falls at the cottage door. Paul catches her and asks if everything is okay. She says she is just tired and they go inside. Will thanks Paul for coming; Barbara tells Gwen how much she loves her. She tells Hallie goodbye, too, and then hugs Will, telling him how proud Hal would be. Paul teases that he expects hugs like this now that he is the "good son". They all laugh. Barbara hugs Gwen and then Will one more time. She tells them to have fun with their friends and leaves. Jack, Parker and Carly arrive. Carly takes Gwen to get a few pictures; Gwen asks about Jack. Carly says she is working on winning his heart again. Jack tells Will that if they ever need anything they only have to call. Paul takes Parker aside, saying he would like to be a stand-in big brother if Parker needs one. When Carly and Gwen return, Will takes a family picture with Jack and Carly.
Alison finds Chris at the hospital and tries to bully him into going to Will and Gwen's with her. He says he has too much work but finally gives in. They arrive at the cottage as Aaron does. Will isn't thrilled but Chris steps up and apologizes for his part in the adoption hearings. All is forgiven. Aaron takes Alison aside and asks what is going on with Chris; Allie says they are just friends. Aaron is jealous. Chris tells Alison that he doesn't want to push his luck with Will so he is leaving. He invites her to come along with him and she accepts. Aaron watches them, very unhappy. Casey, Luke, Noah and Ameera arrive. Luke explains that Ameera is Noah's wife-in-name-only; Luke jokes that Casey is now his "boyfriend". Casey objects to that description. Paul takes Will aside and says he wants to be a better brother. They hug. Just then Sofie arrives. She tearily says her goodbyes to Hallie. When Aaron tries to make her stay, though, Sofie says she wants to be alone and hurries out. Paul follows. On the porch she tells him about Barbara's surgery. They leave together. Will takes Gwen into the bedroom and she says she finally realizes why they need to move - because Sofie can't move on with them back in town. Noah and Luke are lamenting their problems with the INS. Gwen has a great idea - Noah and Ameera should move into the cottage, that way they'll have more freedom because Luke and his "boyfriend" could visit any time. "Uuh, I'm not in this for a long-term relationship," Casey jokes. Luke doesn't like the idea either, but Noah and Ameera convince them it is a great plan. Will takes a picture of the "happy couples". When everyone is gone, Will and Gwen toast to their new life. He kisses her.
Will returns to the cottage and Gwen tells him about Barbara's suggestion and Sofie's offer! Will is stunned and wonders what Sofie is really after. Gwen says as much as she wants to help Babs, this could be their chance to put themselves - and Hallie - first. Will tells her to start packing.
Barbara arrives at Fairwinds and asks Paul to help her convince Will and Gwen to move on - literally - with their lives. Paul wonders what Barbara is really up to and she says she owes it to Will to let him have a life free of Oakdale and Sofie. He reluctantly agrees to stand by her and they leave for the cottage. They barge straight in, telling Will and Gwen that they can handle things in Oakdale. They talk over one another for several minutes until Will interrupts and says they just decided to leave for a while. Paul and Will talk quietly for a while. Paul apologizes for taking Sofie's side but explains that he was just trying to be fair to all sides. Will forgives him. Barbara asks for their plans and convinces them to stay for a farewell party. She leaves.
Lucinda arrives at the cottage and Gwen tells her about moving out of town. Lucinda supports their decision and wishes them well. Gwen and Will settle in for the night with Hallie by telling her a bedtime story about the good fairy who brought Hallie to them.
